Jumping a mountain bike is simple, it's just not easy. There's no shortage of people telling you how to jump, but how much relevant experience do they actually have? Jumping a bike is managing energy and the ability to do that comes with repetition and experience. The MTB Hoppers allow us to give you that experience in a controlled environment at The Ride Series. Follow along on a JUMP Session in the MTB Capital of the World, Bentonville AR!
Follow along on the daily adventures and behind the scenes on Instagram: therichdrew...
It was super rad to have the Hempdogg, Austin Hemperley in attendance as a guest coach. One of the key elements of The Ride Series is that our coaching staff speaks from experience and Austin has a bit of it. As a factory Fezzari rider, Austin is competing at the highest levels of Enduro racing in North America. Starting his racing career at four years of age, Austin has been jumping a bike for quite some time and he draws on thousands of experiences to convey the technique to our students.
Add in this wealth of experience and the environment we provide, students progression is generally off the charts! The key with our JUMP Sessions is the repetition and instant feedback. Acquiring data is the only way to make progress jumping a bike and it's generally very difficult to find a spot to fast track that data acquisition. Once you find that spot, understanding how to manage the energy that's being created is critical. Sure, I have my opinions when it comes to jumping, but physics and gravity will ALWAYS prevail.
I'm excited to partner with @mtbhopper and @Area51 films for this dive into a TRS JUMP Session. Check out www.therideseriesmtb.com for more information and stay tuned for our Summer/Fall schedule. You can also come train with us in the Mountain Bike Capital of the World, Bentonville AR. We have demo bikes available for either Ground School sessions like you saw in the video or On Trails sessions. Shoot us a message at info@therideseriesmtb.com for more details.

I was in this class (white Santa Cruz Tallboy) and I can’t emphasize how helpful this was. Rich is a truly gifted and inspiring teacher. I got into biking (like many of us) during covid. Got a gravel bike early on and then in March picked up a MTB and since I am 40 and a professional classical musician I figured professional instruction was a good idea before I did something particularly dumb. I attended the 201 skills clinic the day before as well as the jump clinic you are seeing here. I had never really jumped a bike before that day and I think this was definitely the best way to get a ton of reps under my belt in a safe and controlled environment. I couldn’t have been happier with the weekend. Don’t hesitate to book a clinic if you are thinking about it. Also big thank you to Austin for being so generous with your time and encouragement!
Hey David! Thank you so much for this insight! You certainly made some beautiful music out there 😉. Looking forward to hearing about your progress as you continue your riding journey 👊🏻
Thanks for your comment. I’m 40 as well and headed to the jump clinic at the end of this month. The website says a full face recommended for the jump session. Did you find this to be true? I’ve been riding a long time but jumping has not been a big part of my riding and I’m not sure if I need to go drop $200+ on a helmet.
@@mikelewis2253 I don't personally think a full face is required for this. The speeds are low and the landing is large and all plastic. I honestly think bombing down anything rocky could warrant one more than the clinic. That said, if any part of you thinks you will FEEL more confident and safe with a full face I wouldn't let the $ stop you. Have fun in Bentonville!
I signed up for the 201 and 301. Is this video considered the 301?
I would jump on a plane tomorrow from Queensland Australia to attend this session. Great advice given in a controlled safe environment. Keep up the great work Rich.
Just bought my first mtn bike, Stumpy alloy. Haven't riden a bike in over 30 years. Used to race BMX as a kid, so I "know" how to jump, though I'm sure I have forgotten. LOL
This is exactly the class I need.
11:53 BKXC's familiar face; great to see him working on the reps. Your feedback and instructional style is always great Rich!
It was awesome to have him out there! He and Sarah crushed it!!
I wish to see Jump Clinic here in Scotland . Rich is a great teacher I’m impressed.
We would LOVE to come to Scotland for an event. You never know what the future hold
I would also like to see a Jump Clinic in the UK. Rich defo seems like an awesome teacher.
BKXC & Sarah in the house! Bout time he took your clinic Rich. He’s suck a good rider but always seems to struggle/avoid jumping. Can’t wait to see him take his jumping to anotha level w/ your help. I’ve taken your clinic, watched all your vids, and am amazed at how you continue to hone your craft. Ive benefited tremendously from your instruction just like so many others. Keep doin you👊👊👊 and spreading the love.
Hey Todd! They are a rad couple and it was awesome watching them work through it differently. It’s just a prime example of how individual personalities play a role in how people are coached.
Hey Rich, I watch a lot of these jump videos and I get super stoked watching you teach. You are still the best out there by far 🙏🏿🙏🏿🤟🏿
Thanks Paul, I appreciate that!
Love how you teach in your videos and this was a cool new format. Keep feeding us!
Thanks Austin! I was excited about this one for sure!
Totally agree with that opening statement. I’ve had people think they suck at jumping,, but sometimes it’s the jumps they’re learning on that aren’t built right.
Yup, those steep transitions can make it difficult
This was great to watch!
Thanks Luke!
Another awesome jump video, Rich. It’s cool watching the riders progress through the video.
Thanks Scott!! It was a fun one, such a great group. The coolest part for me is seeing riders of different skill levels improve side by side. Such a journey as you know man!
Once the border is open I can't wait to leave the mountain bike capital of the world to visit the hill bike capital of the world. Seriously though I am stoked to visit Bentonville soon I hope and take one of these courses to take my skills to the next level. Love the expertise and effort put into these.
Haha!! Would LOVE to have you come visit! Let’s hope the border opens soon and you can make it happen 👊🏻
If you have a chance to take a lesson from Rich...DO IT. I did a half day with him and never had more progress in 1 day than I had that day.
Rich, I can’t wait to come back to Bentonville for a follow-up. If you come to PA/NJ...I can get you a solid group of students.
Thanks Rich... appreciate all your content man!
You know it Mitch! Pumped to work with you in May!
Solid principles, comprehensive foundation, passionate instruction, awesome class - hope to see you again in June. Thanks Rich.
Thank you!! Would love to see you in June 👊🏻
Great stuff 👏👍👌🙌
Thank you! Cheers!
Another awesome vid coming
This video is such a wealth of knowledge! Heck yeah, thanks for sharing Rich!
Thanks Luke!! So rad to have Area51 there to capture the day.
Thanks for making these videos. Just ordered the Coach bundle with extension and balancer.
Hope to see you this weekend Drew I'm coming down from NW Iowa for the Southern Enduro at Passion Play but Friday afternoon I'm riding Bentonville!! See ya soon I hope Drew!! Watch all your video's and love all the content keep it coming!!
Hey Adam! We’re gonna be out and about on Friday afternoon on All American, Masterpiece and Hammer Down. Check out my Insta stories, I’ll give a heads up to where we’re at. Have fun at the race!!
Great video! also, I thought the basketball analogy really helped me.
Thank you! I'm glad it helped, that's one of my favorites.
Checking the schedule now to see if I can attend a class in the near future. So many years of bad habits I need to unlearn!
Heck yeah! Would love to see you at an event!
Awesome Rich................
Thanks Chris!! 👊🏻
Great video
Thanks Eric! 👊🏻
Hooaah! nice venue for training, with awesome equipment and riders, guided by excellent and passionate trainer, what else 🙌...watching here in the Philippines. Really enjoyed all your tutorial video's💯
Thank you so much! It really is a great venue and we love what we do!
Hoping to come to 301+jump next month in McKinney. And then Bentonville soon after that! As always Rich, great content.
Heck yeah dude!! 👊🏻👊🏻
"It's all in the hips... It's all in the hips... It's all in the hips." Chubbs Perterson lol
Chubbs is a smart man 😉
Soo good man!
Thanks Ashton!!
I wish you can teach here in germany! NO BS ... just pure teaching experience
A visit to Germany would be awesome!!
Just finished watching and dang if only we had a coach like you here in my neck of the woods... Awesome vid
Hey Shane!! Where’s your neck of the woods?? 🤔
@@richdrewtherideseries Cape Town South Africa.... 😜
This is what I need in the UK!!! I would sign up in an instant! Anybody?
Come up to Vermont this summer! Would love to check this out. Cool stuff!
I’d love to, I just don’t know if we could make that happen. You could certainly make the trip to Bentonville!
@@richdrewtherideseries that’s definitely on my ride list...heard good things! Might just have to do that.
Love it
Want to teach my kids to jump... Realizing that I can’t explain what I do. You do and amazing job explaining to techniques 🤘🏻
Thanks Jared! This was a fun session!
Just signed up for the June 12-13 MTB 201 and Jump series. Also interested in a private session similar to what Brian experienced either Sunday afternoon or Monday. Driving from Ithaca NY just for this!! Yesterday, Saturday April 10, 2021, I was riding Dizzy Dee our jump trail at Shindagin and did more jumps successfully than I ever have. A really great video. Well done!
Heck yeah Donal, that’s awesome! Send an email to info@therideseriesmtb.com and we can see about getting something scheduled for that Monday 👊🏻
@@richdrewtherideseries Done!
Thanks bro. You da man! Keeper vid for the files.
You are very welcome Aric 👊🏻👊🏻
Rich Drew and BKXC, awesome!!!!!
He's a rad dude!
@@richdrewtherideseries I’m sure he is !
Buen video amigo!! Yo tambien monto por cataluña. Un saludo
Can’t WAIT!!! 🙌
Oh yeah!!
When we gonna get Rich to our brand new trails!? #BogueChittoLove
Awesome ! :) i wish you have session here in Manila after pandemic.
Maybe I'll catch you next time on town, my buddy said he bumped into you!
I hope so Rob!
I bee ride and racing the bike almost 23 years, never been able to jump,if have to think about all that I’ll wake up in the hospital! Make next life 😢
Can’t wait that long... planning to come to the may event in Bentonville!
YES!!! Can't wait dude!!
Feeling the same way about the wait; even though it’s only a few more weeks to attend the April 24/25 event!
This was really cool! I wish you would come to Austin, TX!
I'd love to, just difficult to make it happen with our schedule. You could head up to Dallas.
That would be sick to attend to one of these
Would love to see you there!!
BKXC 👀
😳😉
thats what im thinking,,,
Bkxc without a GoPro has got to be a first
Haha, I tried my best to keep him “in the moment” throughout this. He got some solid footage though 😉
Man you guys should come to Southern California. I’ll take the classes. Willing to learn the right way
Hey Arthur! Planning to make our way out there this fall. Stay tuned for more details.
@@richdrewtherideseries Man yeah put up an announcement of some kind. I'm in Central Florida with no skills classes anywhere. I go up to North Carolina all the time and I'd definitely drive up to your clinic. I could really use some work getting over fears of drops and jumps, I only do small stuff right now for those two things.
Who makes your flannel shirt? Those colors are a perfect gift for my friend in New Orleans.
Hey Sterling! It's the Shaka flannel from Club Ride!
This is great info, thank you so much for sharing. It's explained in a very clear way. Will give it a try since I still skip jumping and want to learn. One question, I ride clipped in, do you recommend doing jump progression with flat pedals or it doesn't matter? I had very scary moments with feet coming out of flat pedals on drops and jumps in the past. Thanks
“You can get very injured.” Hits real hard watching with a broken collarbone...
So sorry to hear about the collarbone. Heal up and get back out there 👊🏻
@@richdrewtherideseries after 6 month..i can now make 5 push ups...ride again safe building the comfort zone again.. Ride On!!
Don't you just love the clavicle, takes the brunt of it so your neck doesn't have to! 👍
Im a senior rider and have been trying to jump consistently for years. This tutorial made the most cense. The only factor that I find hard to get right is when to release the energy. When the front wheel is at the bottom, middle or top of the ramp?
@Rich Drew do you do any online or coaching via video upload? I'd really like to get some solid pro input in my jumping
👆💯
I spy a Sarah and BKXC! Awesome video and thank you for sharing. My goal is to learn how to do drops and jumps and progress this year. I live in New England and am looking for someone who wouldn't mind doing something like this with me for a day or 2.
It was so cool to have them in attendance!
This is gold! Glad I subscribed. Any plans on coming to Houston or Austin?
Yes, come to Austin please!
Hey there! Definitely plans to make it down that way later this year. We’re looking at October currently, stay tuned as we hope to have something scheduled soon 👊🏻
But super cool!
Excellent. When you say create “energy”, is it the same principle as generating energy when pumping on a pump track?
Rich do you and the clinic ever travel out of state?
Hi Paul! We do periodically. You can check out our upcoming schedule at www.therideseriesmtb.com .
We will be heading up to MN and WI in July, then over to UT and CO. Hope to see you at an event.
Any classes coming to Florida? 😅
Not this year, it’s possible in ‘22 though. Plenty of options in Bentonville, we can even set you up with a bike to use here. Shoot is a message at info@therideseriesmtb.com
Only $299 for four hours what a deal!
I agree Rusty 😉👊🏻🙏🏻
@@richdrewtherideseries A mountain biking CZcamsr God has been sent from heaven...and replied.
Rich, who makes the landing ramps you use with the hopper’s ?
Hey Michael! They're from Landwave. I get them from Amazon.
Great clinic. So many tutorials I've seen make it sound like you load ON the jump. It wasn't working for me. My goals for this season are better cornering and to learn to jump. Thanks!
Thanks Dan! Isn't funny how a lot of tutorials say just that?? It's not a matter of opinion, it's physics. Of course there's nuance to every jumping situation, but I'm always trying to work in concert with the takeoff, not push against it.
Need a ride clinic in NC!
Bentonville isn't that far away from ya, make a trip ;)
Will you guys be in the Chicago land area? If so I would like to sign up
Any clinics in Florida?
Hey there! It's possible next year. Book a trip to Bentonville and make it a total experience!
Hi Rich your a awesome coach. Can u do a bunny hop how to
Thanks Tom! I’m still working on an outline for one. It’s a difficult subject for me to figure out how to convey.
12:35 Sarah practicing the jump to manual landing that she accidentally implemented in their latest video lol
She was crushing it!
I tried to go on a small jump like in this video and I crashed real bad. My bike went sideways in the air and I didn't know how to get it pointing straight so I landed sideways and wrecked. I've been terrified to try jumps ever since. I'm in NWA, btw.
Hey there! When the bike goes sideways, it generally means you’re lifting with your arms. Try pushing though your feet the entire way off the takeoff
Hey Rich, any plans on doing a clinic in Vegas in the future?
Hey there! Tough to say. Definitely Phoenix and SoCal this fall, it's possible we could make a Vegas trip. Spread the word and see if there's interest.
How about a class on 360's and back flips. Is there any safe way to learn that w/o an air bag?
HAHA! I'm not the one to teach that. I think relevant experience is a key component to teaching and I have zero of it with these two moves!
Can you do this with a hard tail? I have a hard tail and I really want to learn how to do this.
OF COURSE! Everyone at this particular event was on a FS bike, that's why I said "we all have them."
I am all front end high on jumps & struggle to get my back wheel high >tips
Hey Rich,
Where do I go to sign up for the next one?
Hey Ryan! Head over to
www.therideseriesmtb.com/
and check out the schedule. Would love to see you at an event.
That is BKXC
Indeed it is 😉
haha.. brian of bkxc 12:00
Where can we buy that ramp?
Hey there!
Just go to www.mtbhopper.com and they’ll get you taken care of!
What helmet u wearing in this vid please
Hey Shaun! That’s the Specialized Ambush with ANGi. I really dig it!
What trails in Bentonville are good for learning how to jump?
All American is great! The tabletop at the bottom of the switchbacks is one my favorite places to bring people. The Huntley Gravity zone also works well.
@@richdrewtherideseries Thanks Rich
@@richdrewtherideseries Cool! I signed up for your 201 class on May 15th and I'll be there for the week before getting in as much practice as I can.
Is that the BKXC guy?
Indeed it is
