Just to add two more cents, you would install two perforated drain pipes on each side of the tree, fill them with drain rock and place a few emitters into the tubes. You would also install your root barriers on the edges. We leave the outside box on for this purpose. We only remove the bottom and top plank of the side panels to train the roots to grow down and not out into the hardscape.

@@TigranGertz i disagree, it's not. trees should always be watered at the drip line with the exception of the new tree since the roots have not made it out that far. all you will accomplish is under watering a tree and a heavy formation of roots near the drain pipe. The best way is to simply install drip at the drip line and a few emitters near where the root mass is for the newer tree. Fast draining soil = water multiple times per watering for short periods so long as the water penetrates 3 feet minimum. Slow draining soil water all at once over the course of 2-3 hours which allows the drip to penetrate deep enough. In terms of leaving the sides on. this is a death wish. any arborist would tell you hell no. You will most assuredly cause the tree to become root bound and since the roots cant spread unstable in high winds or if one side has more growth than the other. Proper watering is the only way to make tree roots do what they already want to do. some trees want to be shallower rooted, some deeper, some have a massive tap root, some multiple smaller tap roots. The tree decides not the landscaper. Been doing this for a long time and have planted thousands of trees. AGAIN PROPER DEEP WATERING IS THE ONLY WAY TO ENSURE PROPER ROOT GROWTH. People always want to have some magical way to plant a tree or whatever. There is none. Dig the hole. 2x bigger than container if possible and if not oh well. Backfill with the same native soil. Set up that proper drip irrigation (or flood but not getting into that), mulch and walk away. The tree will take care of the rest.

Beautiful looking tree. Next time you need to adjust the hole for the tree, tell the rigger or operator to move the damn tree out and away from the hole so your crew can do what they need to. You hired the crane, they work for you. Make sure your crew is safe. The last thing you need is someone getting crushed and suffocated.
