IF you bothered to check Walther has a list of ammo that works well with the WMP and ammo that is "not recommended" both the Winchester AND any 30gr ammo not recommended.

I picked up an WMP recently and have been very happy with it. I only use CCI MAXI-MAGS and had no functioning issues. Was very happy with my accuracy off-hand at 25 yards. It is my first Walther.

My Walther P22 owners manual says that the pistol was designed around the CCI mini mag cartridges, other brands don't function well in the P22. I bet the WMP was also designed around the CCI cartridge.

I love my Walther WMP. It's alot of fun to shoot. The fire ball is really crazy to see and play back on video. One thing i noticed is all the speckles left behind after shooting it. I have to clean it after using it. Very easy to clean but should aware of having to clean it after use. The spent cartridges fly like crazy so be aware of that also

The lower rear sight helps accuracy. If you lap your slide in, note wear, clean up/polish friction areas, this gun will shoot any ammo reliably, until about 250rds, where the lighter loads will start acting up because the ammo is really dirty, so clean about every 250 if running lighter loads. My WMP is one of my favorite range toys. It's accurate enough, loud, and blows fireballs...

Have a .22lr Walther and this one in .22mag and both are neat guns. Yes mine prefers the hotter stuff but after 1,000 rounds it will run pretty much all ammo.

  • @buncha5651

It's definitely lower powered ammo, causing the problem. The spent shells ejected far more vigorously from the two that had no function issues.
After 500 to 1000 rounds, it may settle in.

Makes a nice fireball :) Tac driver with a dot on it, also found that it will run Hornady Varmint Express 22 WMR Ammo 30 Grain V-Max with no problems, even though it's not on Walthers list. I found that not loading the next round may be something with the mag. I took both mine apart and put some lube on the follower and i stopped having any problems.

8:15 It would be really cool if Walther tweaked this little rockstar a bit to get 5.7x28mm in there for that Five-Seven cultists...I mean...fans. 😸 Ruger and S&W have 5.7x28mm models now and it seems like the caliber is gaining more traction very slowly similar to 10mm Auto. :) Variety is the spice of life. The magnum .22 caliber rounds like 5.7, .22TCM, and .22TCM9R are all fascinating to me, but I have never fired any of them.

Walther knocked this out of the park imo. Works great. I have always been a .22 Mag. fan due to fun factor for plinking and historical availability/pricing. Even today is can be found at reasonable prices. I also like the fact that Walther provides a listing of approved ammo that has proven reliable in their offering and this list is not limited to one or two very hard to find pew pills. 5.7 is very nice and would also be welcome, but the ammo cost is still to high imo.

I went to the tool shed to pick up a Taurus TX22 Compact and spotted the Walther WMP. Picked up both, the Walther was an impulse and was because, it is a Walther.🤷‍♂ Not having any ammo, I read through the manual and Walther had a section going over the performance of various ammo. They recommended the CCI Maxi Mag, so I ordered that. I wound up putting a red dot on it, and I love it.👍I have discovered, that with the extra weight of the red dot, it can be limp wristed as I discovered when sighting in the dot. Good review👍

The WMP is the first gun I have ever had that legitimately needed a break in period - I was super excited to get it but was worried when it malfunctioned quite a bit in the first 100-200 rounds even with recommended ammo. However, since then it has been much better and functions almost flawlessly. I think it just needs to be well lubed and broken in with a few hundred rounds. Don't worry too much if it isn't perfect right out of the box.

I purchased the Walther WMP because I have a Kel-Tec PMR 30 22 mag, they both shoot extremely great. The Walther WMP is a little heaver than the Kel-Tec PMR 30. I wouldn't take anything for either one. I love to target shoot with both guns. They are both great guns.

  • @Highlander111172
    @Highlander111172 Před rokem +4

Just a word to the wise, I had a Walther P22 that took about 400 rounds before it was broken in and started to work flawlessly. In that break in period, I had a few failures to fire and hangfires. The worst thing was failure to extract. I was using cheap ammo with thin sidewalls in the cases. Lesson learned, don't use cheap ammo while breaking in a Walther pistol. As soon as I put some hotter Remington and CCI ammo through it, the P22 never had any other problems.

Let me first say I enjoy your reviews. But you definitely did not read the manual prior to going to the range. Walther clearly explains what ammo is recommended and what ammo is not. Your review validates the information they have already provide in the manual. All the ammo you had problems with is listed as do not recommend and/or do not use. The CCI Maxi Mag is the preferred ammo and they also suggest staying away from any ammo less than 40gr. My experience with mine is, as long as I use the recommended ammo it runs like a champ. I really enjoy mine.

Not at all surprised that the Dynapoint had issues, as it’s a mid-range “game” load, not a full-powered round. Same goes for the 30gr Hornady because of the light bullet. My best guess is that standard power 40gr ammo is going to be the way to go. The Armscor seem to group well offhand, so l expect it might be a solid choice along with the CCI. Winchester 40gr JHP was always a standard for .22 Mag performance in the past, but I don’t know how it stands these days. I do know that my experience with their current .22 LR ammo has been less than stellar.
Would like to see velocities from the various ammo choices at some point. IME, using a revolver with a 5.5” barrel, 40gr ammo ran about 1250fps, about the same as .22 LR in a rifle. The autoloader without a cylinder gap should be a bit better, and certainly an improvement over typical .22 LR handgun speeds. I see the Walther as a good trail and small game gun rather than a plinker.

Bought one the first day it was released. It would not feed ammo out of the magazines. Once I could get it to pick up a round it would jam or fail to feed every two to three rounds with every suggested ammo on their list. The magaines would wiggle over a quarter inch back and forth when locked into place. I sent Walther a video of the magazine slop. They confirmed it was defective along with my local gunsmith . After three months with no answer I started calling Walther customer service. They finally told me they would replace the pistol since a replacement barrel hadn’t arrived for it. Three weeks later I called and was told there was nothing wrong with the pistol! I asked for a replacement as promised or a refund. Walther chose to refund me. ALOT of the WMPs have had the exact same problem and have been refined under the 30 day walther refund program. After extremely poor customer service and Walther lying to me I will never buy another Walther.

Too thin, too long and not enough recoil for a proper blow back system. To work properly the WRM would need a gas assist, and that would just foul after a few rounds.

Bought one yesterday and shot 4 mags through it today. Like the gun but had a couple failure to fire incidents. It didn’t seem to like some old Remington ammo I had. The rounds that failed were clearly impacted by the gun and my buddy put them in his gun where they failed to fire also. Want to shoot CCI Maxi Mags but I can’t find it locally. The ammo situation is disappointing since I can buy a box of 9mm for $13 but I have to shell out $20 for a box of 22 magnums. Wish they went with a double stack mag that held more rounds but the gun is still enjoyable as is.

I cringed as soon as you mentioned Dynapoints ! I have many years experience with 22mag autos, pistol and rifles. Just notice the smell of the a dyna powder... oder of black powder and runs very dirty! Winchester does have normal/better 22wmr ammo. Dynapoint ammo only good for revolver or bolt action. Nothing wrong with the Walther pistol. In the past; AMT's 22Automag pistol also got underrated reviews due to the Dynacrap ammo. It's the cheapest 22 mag ammo.... go figure!!

Try the Remington 22WMR as it is a hotter round. Work well for me.

Kinda wonder what velocity difference in the ammo I know cci and cor bon are usually hotter maybe lighter bullets and junk win bullets not enough pressure to cycle the slide

Good video, as always. Trigger system looks reminiscent of H&K's p30sk LEM ( Law Enforcement Modification) . Is that true?

Check your mags mine had rough spots on the mag lips , can’t hardly see them but they were there. Cleaned them up & no more prob. Shoots everything I shove in it.

I had a Kel-tec PMR30 that blew up in my face on the first magazine. I think I dented the round and it didn't feed all the way. It fired out of battery and blew up right in my face. I sent the gun back to Kel-tec for a full refund.

That's Kel-Tec for you. Get the WMP instead. Walther builds guns that work and last. Plenty of their pistols from before World War 2 still work just fine.

    Hey Justin,
    Thanks for the opinion!
The one thing I noticed (other than the bad sights) is: the rounds that cycle most consistently are at (or about) 40 grains. It looks like that Walther doesn’t like the heavier grain .22 WMR.
Also, I would encourage you to try shooting the Kel-Tek PMR 30. I have a few of them and have not seen any of the problems you noted with the Walther.
I do have one Walther .22 LR - and it is about as accurate as your Walther .22 WMR. I am not a fan of Walther’s .22 collection thus far.
But, as you aptly stated: this is also just my opinion.
    Thanks again for the review!!

The PMR has a far worse reputation for reliability and build quality than the WMP.

@@joshklaver47 That has not been my experience. I’ve had a few PMR-30s - only malfunctioned when fouled up with too much carbon. Thanks for sharing your opinion though.

You say you’re a fan of Walther products and yet you didn’t realise that they require consistent cartridge loads. It’s not the firearm that’s failing, it’s the propellant weight loads that’s not correct. You are correct, sir, it’s just an opinion, but not a very informed one.

They already make .22 LR pistols, but shooting .22 LR gets boring after a while. The main advantage of the WMP is the more powerful .22 Magnum cartridge. It is more effective, lots of fun to shoot, and never gets boring. Get the WMP. You will never regret getting into shooting .22 WMR.

  • @ekonig19

Knowing how 22mag ammo can be problematic in semiautomatic firearms I would have expected you to do the necessary research and review Walther's ammo recommendation document for the WMP prior to conducting your review.

  • @jeffmcclendon3835
    @jeffmcclendon3835 Před 11 měsíci

It's a 40 grain ammo cycling gun. A version 2.0 probably won't make it possible to cycle 30 grain or 45 grain ammo any more reliably. Winchester 45 grain Dynapoint has failure to fire, failure to chamber and failure to extract in my 22 WMR rifles and failure to fire in my Ruger LCRX 22 WMR. I stopped buying it and would not base an opinion of any 22 Mag firearm on whether it can make it through a mag, clip or cylinder of that very poor ammo or not.
