No when you really need something then you can’t get it. But people that really don’t need it sale it to make $ . It really is sad . Before the doctors knew I had cancer. I was in so so much PAIN. After I gave up, went to ER , demanded a CT. Finally proved that there was a problem, cancerous tumor pressing against nerve bundles and rubs. All that before they would take me seriously. Finally got some pain relief. Really the system is flawed.

I was in the ER at the beginning of the month and I was cold (t-shirt and shorts) so I put my arms inside of my shirt because I didn’t want to ask for a blanket. The nurse came in, walked back out, and came back with a heated blanket. She said “baby, you need to speak up”. Nicest nurse I’ve ever had. Sometimes it’s okay to ask for things.

    • @andynonymous6769
      @andynonymous6769 Před rokem +74

In my experience nurses are happy to get you anything you want and will trip over themselves to keep you comfortable and happy if you’re just nice to them. So many people yell at them in the waiting room, or have some sort of learned helplessness once they get a bed where they refuse to do even the smallest thing to make our lives easier (like getting up to go to the bathroom for example. Yeah. I met a guy who’d just go in the bed if the nurse didn’t come fast enough even though he could walk). I’m so confused about people like that. I genuinely think they just come to the ER because they want to go on a power trip over the nurses because they have no power over anything else in their life
If a patient always says thank you, makes pleasant conversation, doesn’t spend the entire night yelling at us from the end of the room to get them more juice/another sandwich/a pack of cookies ect, understands that no matter how much we want to help, the system doesn’t have enough resources to help everyone who needs help, and doesn’t hold that against us, then it makes those bad patients worth it. Those patients get the 5 star treatment: all the heated blankets in the world, 1000 turkey sandwiches and all the juice the hospital’s budget can buy
I’m not a nurse though, I just worked in the hospital as an intern during EMS school

I'm the exact same. Whenever I'm at the hospital, I always find asking for things so hard but that's also the same in regular life to some extent. I think I do worry though that other people may need the nurses time more than me but I have to remember I am there also and they're there to help me as well.

Yes we are here to take care of you. As long as patients are kind and respectful to me (and don't ask for things literally every 3 minutes, we appreciate being given the opportunity to meet several needs at once) I am happy to spoil them. Being in the hospital sucks and I want you to have anything you can think of to make it more comfortable. Extra kudos if you can remember to ask for what you need while we're in checking on you. It does irk me for a microsecond when patients ring 30 seconds after they tell me they don't need anything, but then I remember that I would probably do the same. I feel like the power of suggestion would kick in after someone asking me if I needed to pee or eat.

I was in the ED overnight for a minor issue last year, and I absolutely hated that the one time I had to bother the nurse, it was for such a stupid reason. They hooked me up to an IV and a heart monitor after I'd set my phone down on the other side of the room. I couldn't get up and get to it. I stared at it for a full 10 minutes, contemplating whether or not I was really going to bother these degree'd professionals about a phone. I eventually buzzed them just because my phone was the only entertainment I had with me, and apologized profusely. The nurse just shrugged and said he wished most patient needs were that quick and easy to take care of lol.

I was hooked up to an IV for more than an hour, but it got stuck and I had to have the cannula moved, I felt bad asking for a loo break instead of letting her get on with her work! Then I really wanted some water, I spent ages thinking about it, then found some in my bag when searching with my good arm! THE TURKEY SANDWICHES! 🤣 I was inpatient once, and my roommate asked my poor nurse for two EVERY time he came into the room. She was slipping one to her wife, who was there 24/7 with her, and they let that slide, but it got to the point where the whole floor, not just our unit, was out of sandwiches, because of them!! I was admitted again, a few months later, and had the same nurse, and he didn't remember me at first, until I said: "um, yeah, can I get a couple of those turkey sandwiches?" He looked at me like WHAT? because I was admitted for kidney stones with nausea and vomiting, and couldn't even keep water down, and then it clicked, and he went "oh my God. You were my other patient when I had the turkey sandwich lady!" And he lost it. He was like, "thank God you're joking. I STILL cringe when someone wants one of those damn sandwiches. They're not even that good!" 🤣 He was awesome!

@@vanessaatalanta2475 it was insane, the amount of sandwiches they went through! I mean literally every time he came into our room, they asked for 2 more. And they did hourly rounding, so it was at least 2 an hour, and if he came in more than once an hour, they'd ask for more. I feel like all he did during his shift was get them sandwiches! I was like what in the world?? I think we ran out, because it was night shift, so there wasn't anyone from food & nutrition to make more. But, like you said, they ate so many that our whole floor was out?? 😳😳 That's insane. And like the other comment says, yeah, I know they're free, but what if other people were hungry? I just kept thinking about the people that got admitted after dinner, and hadn't eaten, and all they would be able to have was crackers, and pudding, because all the sandwiches were gone. My nurse said it was probably more for the patients wife, because her meals weren't provided, and he said he understood, but at some point they needed to stop, because technically she wasn't really supposed to even be there all night, and the hospital wasn't responsible for feeding her. That's why I thought he was such a great nurse, because even though he didn't have to, and he could've said no, he went and got them 2 turkey sandwiches EVERY time they asked. Nurses don't get enough respect or credit for how amazing they are. Thank you for the well wishes. I still struggle, and was actually just in the hospital again, but my roommate wasn't a turkey sandwich requester....she was just cold, and wouldn't let anyone turn the A/C on, and it was literally 85° in our room. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Poor thing. That's usually my biggest issue; my roommates are always cold, and it's always so hot. But, she was soooo sweet, and my nurse went and got me a fan, which is usually what they do, when I have roomies that are always cold. Have I mentioned how amazing nurses are?? 🤣🤣

Turned out it was a panic attack that wouldn't let up for hours & it did take a toll on some of my body in a similar manner. I stated awake and conscious as i could while i waited till i could call my sister to pick up my daughter. At that time, i was the only parent available & it was 4am roughly. Stayed awake best i could & told the nurse i was afraid they would call cps on me while i was asleep or something happening to her with the stuff in the room. The nurse went with her to get some sodas & a sandwich. They came back & she is in full on surgical dress with a sandwich & soda for us both 😂. He even let her help take my vitals & was so sweet & patient with her. She even volunteered to help them if i needed surgery 😂. Im like "you know what? You can sign off on their paperwork after. A very important job." Her rebuttle "but i can cut in a straight line!" 🤣. Guy was laughing & great. My sister was able to get there & pick her up. She got out of sight & i passed out finally after everything (including sedatives). When i woke up later they saw i was having facial muscle issues & a few minor things, but i was commended & scolded for not going to sleep. Because i didnt sleep though, i got to see her so happy & have that wonderful experience during a scary time. I thanked that whole team & apologized. They said she was the highlight of their night.

I hate bothering the nursing staff when in these situations. I have been in the ER more than a woman of my age should ever have to for various reasons throughout my life. Typically I will wait for them to come back into the room before asking for something and if i happened to forget to ask then i wait until they come back in the next time. I was admitted once for 5 days and despite being in a small bay right next to the nurisng station i refused to ask for assistance. Day two or three everything accumulated and was getting to me. This was my first ever hospitalization and i could see and hear how understaffed and stretched thin the nurses and CNA's were on our unit. I ended up having a panic attack and just started to bawl my eyes out from the anxiety, brutal pain and the new caffeine headache i was experiencing. After maybe 20 mins or so of me crying a nurse poked her head in and said "i thought i heard you crying, what's going on?" I explained that it was all just to much and the caffeine headache i had on top of it all now was just to much for me to bear. I didnt ask for anything for it as i didn't think i was allowed (clear liquid diet only) and she in a very nice manner told me not to let the pain get that bad and next time to ask for help before it becomes unbearable like that. I apologized and she returned with my pain medicine, a nauseous med and a cup of black coffee with some sugar packets (she even snuck me in a creamer or two which i was not supposed to have but was not sure if i could drink just the black coffee). She also reiterated to me to reach out and ask for help thats what they were there for. About an hour or so later she came back in with some headphones for the small TV that was in there, ear plugs as there were a lot of patients in a small area so i could sleep better and some personal hygiene things. I was so grateful for her cause she made my stay a little less traumatic for me. God bless nurses and CNA's

I started to document in the chart each time she called and made a request.
In the morning, I get an angry family member confront me about how I ignored the patient all night. I brought out the chart and showed them the number and frequency of requests that were made. They kept offering more pain relief but i refused because i genuinely didn't need it.

My husband went to CHI Memorial in Chattanooga. He has MS and can barely stand or transfer without falling. He had fallen at my son’s home and was saying he couldn’t breathe. We called an ambulance. It took some big guys to get him off the floor. Once at the ER he was diagnosed with fluid overload and given Lasix. The nurses left and didn’t come back for hours. I was at home having to take care of our dog who just had a huge surgery and had to lay still. He called me and said they were discharging him and I needed to come get him. When I arrived he was soaked head to toe in his own urine. He can’t stand and has limited use of his arms. I called the nurses in and asked them why they didn’t check on him, answer his calls for help, or maybe put a Foley in him? I could see the other rooms in the ER were mostly not occupied and the waiting room empty. They left and sent the doctor in and I gave them all an earful. My husband was humiliated. Then the nurse came back with a wheelchair and told my husband to “hop in” from the gurney. What’s more it had only one foot rest which caused his foot to repeatedly go under the chair as he was being pushed. I let this nurse have it again. I called and spoke to the head of the ER and reported this. Her response in a letter said “you cannot be refunded any money “ which I never mentioned. In a holder on the wall behind the bed out of reach.

Last time in the ER for a kidney stone I was right across from a blanket warmer, but I waited until nurse came to check on me to ask for one. I told him that pre-Covid I would probably have just had my husband get one for me.

I was in the ER after a suicide attempt and was freezing. I asked (nicely) for a blanket 3 times. The 4th time I was crying and a little less patient. The asshole nurse told me “This isn’t the Hilton, lady.”
I got him fired. I went ALL the way up the chain. Don’t fuck with crazy people.

Zofran is my daily hero. I cannot express how amazing that medication is. It used to be, really hard to get a full approval, but now they send me 60 every two weeks. (And, yes, I use that many... art least three times a day, sometimes four.)
I can't imagine what people like me did before Zofran. Probably took Ragland and slept all day. Well that's what it does to me anyways. And promethazine knocked my ass out more than Ambien. Zofran is incredible!!!

Zofran was a lifesaver when I had to go to the hospital for a stomach bug. Couldn't keep anything down for days before taking it. The downside is I had to get some saline suppositories for its particular negative side effect. 😅 Really hope I don't have to take it again.

When I was in the hospital, another patient kept pestering the nurse for a ridiculous amount of nonsense. It was terrible.
