    I'm 34 years old and was a smoker for 18 years up until a couple weeks ago.. I'm up to running 3 to 4 miles daily any just went to the track to time my 400m dash. I turned in a 68, which was a pleasant surprise considering the smoking past and no weight training yet. Using your information, I'll hit the weights and try the 400m again in 60 days. My goal is low 50s.

    Very informative video! Quick question, in order to hit the start and drive phase in the wait room, would you switch from prioritizing back/front squats to unilateral squats or would you focus on the back/front squat and then accessorize with the unilateral squat?

    • @GarageStrength
      @GarageStrength  Před 3 lety +2

      I would prioritize all 3. Single leg squat may take emphasis on one program, but others will focus on back or front squat. Some nuance based on what athlete needs at different points of year.

    How strong do I really need to be to run fast? I've been trying to progress on squats for a few months but am only able to squat 255 pounds for 3 reps and 5 sets. This is done completely raw and high bar below parallel. Also I can do fast quarter squats with 315 pounds. I'm 205 pounds and 6ft4 though. I'm not sure if I can even get any stronger. It's hard.

    The braking force from foot landing must be a lot less than air resistance. I have actually a hard time understanding this well spread idea of braking force when landing the foot. Don't we all have knees to slightly bend to prevent this braking force to occure?

    • @KX5Kat
      @KX5Kat Před 2 lety +1

      Don't worry too much about air resistance unless you're actually at a meet.
      Think of it this way. Most elite sprinters reach 80% of their top speed within the first 10m, most of the rest comes in at the drive phase and a tiny amount at top end speed. The foot hitting the ground is necessary to move forward, but it's also the thing that slows us down. As you accelerate less, braking force slows you down more and more. Aside from good technique, you minimise this by exerting maximal force into the ground WHILE KEEPING YOUR FOOT IN CONTACT WITH THE GROUND FOR AS LITTLE TIME AS POSSIBLE.
      This is what ultimately makes a sprinter. A sprinter has the unique ability to exert maximal force into the ground within an incredibly short time-frame.
      Some are born with this ability, but it can definitely be trained.

    Bolt's technique is actually garbage. His arms flail around and his action is really very very inefficient. He also slows down first, and you see even in his WR runs he could have gone even faster. He's a physical beast, someone who chows chicken mcnuggets like they're going out of fashion, slurps sugary drinks etc but his stride is so long because he's so tall, and his fast twitch muscles are unbelievable. A natural phenomenon.
