  • Welcome to my channel about dinghy cruising a John Welsford designed 'navigator' standing lug sail yawl called Arwen. In this video we do another early season shake down cruise after barely any sailing over the previous two years (due to the pandemic).
Other videos on my channel cover my developing skills in dinghy cruising and maintaining a small open boat along the coastal waters and rivers of SW England. I post at least one video or blog post a fortnight. You can follow Arwen's blog at www.arwensmeanderings.blogspot.co.uk
If you enjoy everything to do with learning to sail small open boats and dinghy camping/cruising along stunning coastal and river scenery then come subscribe to my channel and blog. I look forward to hearing and sharing your comments, advice and tips. Fair winds to you all.
    Steve (and Arwen)

You sir, are messing about in boats. And that alone is worthy of praise. I am one who your adventures inspire to continue my own messing. Keep up the fine work!

Wow that does look a cold grey day. Sunny days are best, things look better and your mood is higher... problems not so big. I wish you sunny days!

You beat me to it! Well done on getting out so early in the season and don't be too hard on yourself. Sailing is a process in the full sense of the word.

I have been remiss in my duties regarding keeping up with your channel of late, but I am back and catching up. Lovely little video and great to see you out and about on the sound. If there's one thing I have learned in my six decades or so, it is that you never stop learning, unless you decide to, and that is when decline can start to bite from my observations. I am moving back to the UK soon after twenty years or so abroad, and it is starting to look like our destination is going to be Plymouth; (I am from Looe), so I hope to meet you out on the sound next summer. All the best and thanks for the uploads.

Fair play going out in January. Even on a sunny day like today you would have frozen in the wind chill.

I've slept on glaciers in the Alps in just a bivvy bag when younger and thought that was cold then but other day.....I was definitely colder.....it's an age thing Dale 😄 Anyway, how you doing...safe and well?

Good to see you out again but you are tougher than me that looked cold. Hopefully spring will be with us soon and I can get out on the water too.

Nice to see somebody getting out on their boat. Up here in the northwest corner of the US it seems to be mostly cold, wet and gray and either windless or blowing 20 knots. Just a note, I think you will be happier with your mainsail if you raise the peak enough to get that crease out. The mizzen needs a tighter luff as does your jib. I've switched over to low-stretch Dyneema where possible for my halyards, it has helped a lot. Good sailing and I look forward to your next adventure.

Those are really helpful tips Steve. I'll sort the tie on position on the yard today ready for s trip next week. Appreciated. Will go look at prices of dyneema as well.. thanks for the tips. Take care now

You're a real sailor in my books... getting out on such a day to try and get a moment of what it's all about. Well done and keep going. Looking forward to your next video and hopefully somewhere interesting to stop over.
