    As a black women, I would always look at white women with “straight” hair and I can see the potential waves. Time for white women to experience the natural hair journey.

      yesss my hair has beautiful curl/waves when it's short (shoulder length), but as it gets longer, it straightens out from the weight and age of the its ends. i've learned to keep it oiled, use product (mousse works really well), and let it dry in a loosely tied scarf. it looks so alive these days

      I finally embraced mine a year ago and it honestly changes my relation with my hair so much. I love it now and see that it was my fault that I didn't before, I wasted so many years mistreating it.
      Now we are a team and I get a lot of compliments, especially from people who have known me for many years and see how my hair has changed - saw my cousin again recently after a long time, she asked me if I had curled my hair. She couldn't believe this was just my same natural hair but treated right.

    Can I just say I truly appreciate the fact that you don't "shade" wavy or loose curls, ever. There are so many people that discredit looser curls and just make it seem less than. They'll say "I'm having a bad hair day, it's just wavy not curly" .... looser curls get this negative connotation associated with it but you, a curly queen, doesn't ever shade any type of hair. Ever.
    It doesn't go unnoticed how much thought and research you put into your videos. Thank you for including all curl types 💛

      Christina Vargas but a lot of people don't get to pick between straight and curly therefore they are stuck with what they got but all these girls gotta do is wake up and wash it for it to be straight and if your hair can be straight and "curly" then it's not curly it's wavy also on another note some of the product they use are MADE for black women not for white peoples "curls" and it's sad because I see that privilege I can go to any store and get shampoo and conditioner for a white person but it is so hard to find good products for black. just bc the ppl who say it’s just wavy not curly say that, doesn’t mean that it’s discrediting anything. that’s just your own (and whoever else feels that way) personal insecurities because people are allowed to have a preference without having to feel bad about it or obligated to please you (or others) by saying what you want to hear. sad truth you’ll have to accept in life. it’s like saying “ugh, my skin is bumpy and not smooth”. societal standards made smooth skin better (you can have bad skin from genetics and not bc of underlying issues so who’s to say it’s worse than smooth skin?) but saying that doesn’t discredit ppl with acne. but it probably bothers them. like hearing people gush over curls and not waves bothers you.

      @martacastillo6272 Před 4 lety +130

      Yeaahh I live in Venezuela and every single girl that can't "tame" their texture goes through a keratin straightening treatment in their teens and it becomes a monthly thing for _years_ , I have 2c/3a hair and when I was around 13/14 years old I thought that only straight hair was nice and I did a straightening treatment.
      I'm 18 now and I've been transitioning for over a year and I'm getting there but it's been a hard year of people asking me "why don't you brush your hair? Your hair is a mess" or when I finally got some ringlets back people started touching them or running their hands through because 'it was sticking up' or "it looks frizzy, you forgot to brush it" or "you should do a keratin treatment".
      People here think that you either have straight hair or super curly hair (like a 3b to 3c or type 4) and loose curls don't exist, so you have to get rid of them with chemicals so that you look 'presentable'

    • @lizdiaz3951
      @lizdiaz3951 Před 4 lety +39

      @@martacastillo6272 That's really interesting! When I was in elementary school, I had such little knowledge and such horrible preconceptions of textured hair, that when it started to change in puberty, i thought my hair was going to come out kinky. At the time I hated kinky hair, but it was only because whenever I saw the peer black girl's hair, it was always overly processed with a relaxer, or their scalps were raw from braids, or they had excessive dandruff, etc. This meant that my only experience with kinky hair were horrible examples(my town and school were predominantly white also). At around 10, my hair started to change from puberty, and I literally thought that my hair was going to come out like theirs (even though the probability of that was impossible from my heritage and race) and I was so angry. My mother didn't like it either, so she had it chemically processed hair for about 4 years, until I got so tired of the roller sets and unmanageability, that I started doing my research of what to do with it. When I say my mind was opened, I'm saying I was completely blown away by the beauty of kinky and curly hair. I started transitioning, not caring what my hair would look like, and my hair wasnt even close to type 4 hair, it was 3b, showing the extent of my misconceptions I prevously had about hair in general. When I was transitioning, it was difficult to style because of the roots, and the women in my family would never give me support. My mother wouldn't buy me products to see what works, she would urge me to relax it, etc. but guess who has amazing hair now :)

      @Ranica James not always. If your individual hairs are very fine with a tight cuticle they can hang straighter when wet due to the weight. My hair is decidedly curly when dry, but looks more wavy when wet… and that's with NO holding products, no scrunching, just my hair doing what it does naturally. 🙂

      @juliah2794 Před 4 lety +7

      I have very straight hair, no frizz, no matter if I brush my hair or not, let air dry, blow dry, put products in or not. I tried several of these scrunching routines, because I thought maybe I can get waves that way. The result is always the same: frizz and my hair looks like the left girls before-picture.
      If your hair after scrunching looks anything like their hair after scrunching, then, yes, you definitely have waves already in your hair.

I wasted a lot of time trying to comb it straight. Anyhow, I'm going to start doing all your hair tips. I'm even going to start wearing a silk bonnet to bed. @@ccap3211 Yeah I found a product called beard soap which made my beard feel great, so I learnt how to make my own soap at home. Then I used it to wash all of me for the past 6 years (I've only been growing my hair for 3 years). Sometimes I would do a rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar after washing my hair. That seems to help. I believe the acid helps to close the hair cells after the soap has opened them up.
      I found the soap wasn't too bad so long as I don't put much coconut oil into it. Coconut oil makes a very bubbly soap which strips too much oil from the hair.
      Anyhow, I switched to using shampoo and conditioner a couple of weeks ago. I'm using Maui Moisture because that was the only curly approved products I could find in the local supermarket. I didn't like it much the first time I used it. My hair went all weird and fluffy. And I could smell the perfume in my hair for the next few days. But I tried again almost a week later with the shampoo and the hair mask. That seemed to work better. Then I have used the conditioner by itself once since then. I'm using the purple bottles.
      I've ordered some Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus on Amazon and they arrived a couple of days ago. I'm looking forward to trying them next time my hair needs washing.

    Hello Mell and Amanda, I'm coming back 2 years later after watching this video (took me so long to find it again haha). This video is absolutely a GAME CHANGER for me and my bestie. We both had "frizzy" hair and tried millions of ways to get it smooth/ straight. Each time we went to a salone, we were always told that our hair was super frizzy and difficult and the hair dresser would always recommend us to get it straightened (I guess natural wavy/ curly hair is not that common in Asian people so probably the hair dressers themselves hadn't dealt with that many wavy girls before). But thanks to you, now we are celebrating our wavy hair. We found our natural wavy hair compliments our features way better than chemically straightened hair! XOXO

    My mom has wavy/curly hair. My dad has straight. I always thought I had straight hair but it never ever looked right. My hair has always been so intensely frizzy from root to end. I never have bleached my hair, I rarely heat style (like once every few months rare), I only have dyed it a few times in my life (with colors close to my brunette hair). I sleep on a satin pillowcase, I even use a microfiber towel. I did masks I did everything and the only time my hair ever looked okay was when I did overnight braids to wavy my hair. Which always stayed in my hair for 2 or more days until I washed again. Since finding this channel to help my coworker enhance her natural biracial curls I came across this in my notifications. I got some products I tried it last night and I almost cried. Little to no frizz and my hair has texture. I still have a lot of learning to do but I wanted to say thank you mel for this.
    Thank you for all of your extremely informative, fun videos. I finally am on the path of loving my hair! 💕

    I have wavy hair but I would never follow a routine like this because I hate the stiff look of my waves with all these products 😔 I think the crunchy look is really beautiful on curly hair but not so much on wavy hair. I just want soft bouncy waves but obviously my hair loses its pattern at the end of the damn day lol

      Try scrunching out the crunch or using something like a curl/wave cream. I’ve been using Miss Jessie’s Multi Cultural Curls for a while now and it doesn’t leave my hair all crunchy. (A little product goes a long way btw)

      Only comb it after shower 🚿, use a leave in conditioner (not much) comb it to distribute the product, and let it dry. That I do and is soft and dance with the Wind, I only use my hands to set it in place every day, and obviously with the pass of the days, my natural oils from my scalp change it a bit but only in the base. If I by chance decide to comb it, after that I use my hands to twist the whole tail to the left and then to the right and that's it, it starts to get its natural curves again.

      dixie normous I don’t diffuse my hair! I notice when I put heat, it gets really frizzy & damaged bc it’s so thin, it doesn’t like heat! So I just use a conditioning shampoo, a really good conditioner for frizzy hair(both by hairitage). Then I’ll use a leave in conditioner (hairitage) with a hair styling product (not your mothers). I’m trying to find other products to use bc I’m starting to get some hair fall out. But maybe try without the diffuser!! & just get real hydrating & conditioning products!! Hope this helps 💜

    for me as a wavy hair-girl who always thought she had bunch of frizzes on her head and hated her hair, I find these routines not so appealing still, it takes so much time and energy. So I came up with something simpler, where my hair looks tamed but does not take as much time.
    use sulphate-free shampoo
    use silicone-free conditioner
    when you are out of shower put some lubricant (or alcohol-free gel) on your palm, rub your hands and carefully distribute it on your hair by scrunching it inside on both sides. Scrunch up microfiber towel on your hair same way to dry it a little bit and let it air-dry. That's it

    Quicks steps...
    1. Work quickly
    2. Apply spray product when wet
    3. Apply styling cream on ends
    4. Brush product through (don’t over brush)
    5. Use spray bottle if needed, flip hair upside down
    6. Clump hair together and use brush or finger to define curl
    7. Scrunch from bottom, pulse and squeeze. Hear the squish
    8. Finger coil some more
    9. Set with gel by glazing, gently caress and scrunch hair
    10. Use a towel and carefully lay your hair in it upside down. Leave in for 10 minutes
    11. Hover diffuser over head to dry roots.
    12. Scrunch roots with diffuser and good for a few seconds.
    All done!!

    When I was a kid, my hair was straight, shiny and soft. Then when I was a teenager it became extremely frizzy, tangled and dry, I hated it. I had normal looking straight hairs, but then there were extremely thick hairs that were twisted like a wire/dna. Anything I put it would literally leave a dent in it. Like hair ties , pins or braids would leave their shape in it. It looked terrible. If I let it dry without brushing it, it would be wavy. And now I am an adult, I started drinking a lot of water, using more expensive shampoo, argan oil, no heat, and henna and my hair is barely frizzy anymore. Like it's a bit poofy after I wash it, but by the next day it becomes soft and silky. And whatever I put in it, braids, ties or pins, they don't leave their shape in it anymore. So now I am freakin' confused....

    Thank you for this video! I tried the method you showed in this post yesterday and for the first time ever, I can see defined waves and curls. I had to use the products I had at hand rather than what you recommended, but I'm still uber impressed by the results. It makes so much sense to brush one's hair while wet to make the waves detangle and also get defined. I've been trying TCG method for ages and spent so much time and money trying to get it right and failing miserably. I kind of gave up and decided I just had awful hair. But with the results I got with what you showed plus the not-to-great products I had at home, I think I can pick something good and actually see good results.
    I also want to add that my hair doesn't just look better, it also feels right... and that's a very new sensation for me.

And majority of people wanted their hair flat ironed, so wasn’t much of a need to learn styling for wavy hair. I learned quite a few things watching this!!
