@@AndrewKarczewski Well, if Rick Rubin is involved, his name shouldn't even be on the album. Maybe they write, 'Helped or Inspired by Rick Rubin', but not "produced by Rubin'. He is notorious for essentially never being in the studio with the band. He lets the band and his engineer do all of the work.I have heard about a ton of stories like this involving him. One time while doing a Slayer album, he would show up in the studio once every 7 or 8 days to see how things were going. I don't think that he is lazy or anything, it is just that he will take on multiple projects at once. Bands either love him or hate him. Some accept his absences as 'it's just the way he works'...while others hate it and don't work with him again.

P*Funk Frusciante found rock stardom was not what it was cracked up to be (excuse pun 😆) in fact, it caused him frightening mental illness. Retrospectively this isn’t surprising, and the experience made him strong and even more creative.
I feel sad, even angry though that technology and more recently Covid have ruined the prospect of appreciation and livelihood for musicians. The record industry stood aside and allowed it all to happen and will never be held accountable for it’s failure to nurture and support artists adequately.
I don’t have any answers, but I hope musicians such as yourself can gain the inspiration to keep growing, somehow, otherwise we all lose and become spiritually the poorer.

I suppose to each his/her own....as long as he is growing as a musician and as long as he is happy in his life...thats all I can really hope for.
Curious to hear what the RHCP album will sound like.
I enjoyed the Getaway....liked about half Stadium Arcadium...enjoyed about 90% of By The Way and Californication etc...(and their B sides are actually better than many of the songs that made the albums)....and of course BSSM and Mothers Milk are great.

Marie Fontana Marie Fontana hard to believe that rock is on its last breath and almost dead as John says. I think that has to do with the way music has changed hands to the internet, like CZcams and Spotify, and how little they are paying the musicians, and even more so, music companies. People who listen to rock music don’t put a whole lot of money into it. They listen to it, and consume it, but don’t really pay for it anymore. Why would you, when you can get it for free on CZcams? So, record companies have decided to put out the music that they can make money on. Rock will never die, but, it’s not going to be pushed without the demand for it. And, demand equals money. So, if we want rock to stay alive, WE MUST PAY FOR IT. Or, we will be forced to listen to the music that teenage girls like the most, because that’s who puts the most money into the pot.

It’s really curious how such a melodic songwriter and virtuoso musician that has in-depth sophisticated musical knowledge, can have such an interest in these electronic forms of music. But like someone else said, I have a feeling he will circle back around. He is very intense and in the moment. He says this but then literally a year later wrote “The Heavy Wing” and sings on that and there is no way that wasn’t “his true self”. It’s impossible to write something that sounds so genuine and not mean it, especially from him. Plus he seems to be having a great time on tour. I for sure think he will sing again, even if it’s a different way. He is too diverse, even for what he says “I only express myself in the ways of solely electronic music” kinda goes against everything that makes John, John! He literally loves every type of music.

Great interview could listen to John speak for hours. A very Buddhist, Eastern philosophical approach to music. Creating music without the Expectation of the audience. Without being Attached to a certain kind of music and not letting the influences of the world affect your creativity. Keeping the creative process new approaching it with a different perspective without Aversion. John continues to be an artist in the true sense of the word. making Original music without influences from the outside world but simultaneously tapping into his own memory of influences from his past. Being in the NOW of the creative process. Rock music "taking its last breath" in the sense that the best music doesn't have to be behind us if we are willing to look at it in a new way. and as always talking about energy, electricity and the magic of sound. Jungle boogie. Keep intros and outros in music keep the foreplay in music so, we still have the peaks to look forward too and keep it new so, we are always keeping it real every time. I'm down with that. lol!

I keep having this recurring idea when I hear John or Flea talk.....in my head, they let a grown-ass man that they don't know (me) come over to their house and stay for a week so I can go through their record collection and they can show/teach me about all of the shit I should be listening to in any genre of music. I am well on my way in a few genre's but their knowledge of music is deep. In my head I can hear Flea saying, "So this afternoon we are going to learn about Charles Mingus"........As if, he/they have nothing else to do.... ;-). hahahaha
Okay, so back to reality, I have learned so much about music from these guys, I can't thank them enough.

It might be their best album ever to date! Their gonna be cooking something new and fresh to rock I bet. They have been together for a few months jamming so they prob have been exploring and mixing genres with Rock to see what works. With how fast they bust out songs I can guess that they can record maybe 3 albums worth of songs if quarantine last midway till next year. Even then maybe they won’t tour as much and just create magic in Studio Albums only like the The Beatles late era. Anyway I’m excited we should get some sick music without a doubt from the Chili’s, Johns knows how to produce more now, he’s explored and has knowledge in many genres, flea is his vanilla to his cream, Anthony busting out catchy rhythms and chorus’s to John’s riff’s and Chad keeping them all on check slapping his sticks around them all. The whole band seems to be at a fresh start rn which is even better!

Prog not Prague. Prog (Progressive Rock) is a type of music from the late 60s/70s, bands like Yes (who the interviewer mentions), King Crimson, early Genesis, some Pink Floyd . To parrot something is to imitate it.

Actually he said "to pair it down" not parrot. I think he means to strip it down to its essentials, to its bare bones. Prog rock is kind of known for long and complex songs, sometimes with many instruments/musicians and lyrics that are considered intellectual by some and pretentious by others. Just Google Prog Rock and you will find many articles explaining it better than me. Cheers
