  • This no cooking cold porcelain recipe won't shrink your creations as much as the microwave version. PLEASE NOTE: I've changed the recipe, see down below.
    I hope you find this helpful, let me know if you have any questions!
    PLEASE NOTE: I've changed the recipe and I recommend you to use a little less starch than the video shows.
    The improved recipe is:
    1 ¼ cup starch
    almost 1 cup white glue (add more if it seems dry)
    2 tbs baby oil
    2 tbs lime juice
    Combine in a bowl and knead until it forms a soft and smooth dough. If the clay seems dry, add more glue and knead until it's smooth. Cover in plastic wrap and store in an air tight container.

    It is common sense that shrinkage is caused by the water drying out. Using lemon juice, lime juice, or vinegar as a preservative just adds more water to the mix. If you only make enough that you need for your projects you dont need to store any and therefore dont need the preservative. If it needs more moisture just add more glue. noticing when you are kneading you use more baby oil on the surface and again in the storage wrap. Oil will reduce cracking. When adding color try using oil based enamel. Stay away from latex as it is water based. Again adding water is not good. You are creating a bonding agent here. Dry time will probably be longer but it should reduce shrinkage and cracking as well as bond much stronger with oil based enamel. Just a thought.

      +maximill hunter I'm assuming only temporarily. The fridge has moisture, so it will not harden it forever but the coldness will make it harder like anything else. Just knead it after you take it out of the fridge and it should be fine c:

      +Stephen Westman so with that logic I am assuming it would be best to use acrylic paints to incorporate in the dough to whiten it, instead of gouache

      Ah yes I noticed if I add oil paint to color the clay it doesn't seam to crack as easy when drying. My issue is keeping my creations from drooping like silly putty while drying. Wonder I'd I have to much glue maybe. I just made a second batch last night and added less glue, but have not tried it with my poppit molds yet.

    I just made 2 batches of this. The first following your recipe exactly and it turned out way too wet. I added about a half cup more corn starch and it was perfect. Second batch I put 2 cups corn starch, 8 ounces generic school glue, 2 tbsp baby oil and 2 tbsp lemon juice. This is the magic recipe for me. Thank you so much!! I had no idea cold porcelain could be made without cooking. :-)

      +plastglass it depends on the glue. some glues are more watery than others. Actually the creamier the glue, the better.
      I like to start off with 1 cup glue and 1 cup starch and then add starch as I knead it (one spoon at a time so I can remember exactly how much is in, so the next time I can take a shortcut)
      I know this is an old comment and an old video but I'm just putting it out here for the record :)

    For you who said it came out too wet, it could be because the recipe says 2 tablespoons of each oil and juice. But in the video they only added 1 tablespoon of oil and only another tablespoon of juice when the mixture was too dry. Try just adding 1 of each and not quite a whole cup of glue and see if that works.

    Just tried this recipe tonight. Subbed the baby oil for olive oil ( all I had) and vinegar instead of lime/ lemon juice ( again,all I had on hand). Turned out great, just kept adding more corn starch ( a little at a time) while kneading till it stopped being sticky. Am waiting for tomorrow so I can play with it. Thank you so much for taking the time to make the video and share the recipe!

    I buy potato starch at my local grocery store, but if you can't find it you can use corn starch. It will turn out just the same.
    I'm using a "no brand" craft glue found at a dollar store. It's the white craft kind of glue, just like Elmers.
    I hope to be able to upload some new videos soon!

    Hello~ I want to make this recipe but i was wondering: what is the difference between the cooked and non-cooked version? I read that a difference is the way it shrinks, but I wish to know about it's properties. I mean , is there a difference in properties? Like, is much smother, spreads better, dries better...things like that? Please, would you give me some advice?

    • @sujadutta
      @sujadutta Před 8 měsíci

      @Claudia-Skye Hello from India. The cold porcelein is actually NOT cold (😊) but it is a heated or cooked clay which dries translucent (like porcelein). A few craft savvy friends tell me it is harder and helps you with minute detailing. You can roll out very thin layers which don't break. But the minus point here is that shrinkage is more when compared to uncooked clay. Dont know if this helps you. Cheers.🤗

  • @SnowLeepord
    @SnowLeepord Před 9 lety +2

    If your dough is too gooey, its because she said to put 2 tbs of oil and 2tbs of lime juice in the description. But in the video she puts 1 tbs for each. I know the description one is the improved one but the video has more starch and the description has less starch so obviously the one in the description gets gooey!

    I don't understand how there's still so much starch left loose when you tip the mixture onto the workspace. Only with just 1/2 a cup of glue, my mixture is super runny and I'm really inclined to add in more starch.. but it just makes it much firmer and even crumby..
    I've also realized the glue used in the video is much thicker than PVA glue.. PVA glue would be runnier - wood glue is even more runny than PVA; yet they are both 'white glue' - might need to be specific about which type of white glue aye.
    UPDATE: The glue type used in the video is TACKY glue, which is thicker than regular PVA glue. That explains heaps.

    • @p4ngolin
      @p4ngolin Před 8 lety +1

      +Joyce Fung tacky glue is still PVA glue, they just don't dilute it so much (there is less water in). it's better to pick a glue that has less water, as later on when it dries, the evaporation of said water causes the shrinkage.
      since tacky glue contains more glue than water, it is usually more expensive, though.

    If you use starch, you can add more glue if it turns out dry. I have never tried using corn flour, but it have to be a starchy flour. For example, you won't be able to use rice or soy flour, since it more like wheat flour than starch.

Many people have gotten rid of their microwaves so this is great for them also. I loved the kneading process. The clay is so smooth and squishy! I didn't know about the shrinkage factor until I saw your video. Next time I use your method. :)

    I'm using a thin plastic cutting board. Make sure to add a couple of drops of baby oil on the surface and the clay shouldn't stick. You can also work on waxed paper or on a piece of oilcloth.

    Hello, I've tried this recipe with corn starch but it seems it has a different consistency as you would with potato starch? It's not as stretchy and it breaks a bit easily. is this an issue of more or less of something else? other than that the weight of it is a little heavy and it does tend to sag a bit after textured. but otherwise, I love your tutorial! short and simple.

    I made some of this clay and it was fine the same day but the next day it was kind of hard. Do you have any tips how to keep it soft. I don't know if that is normal. It was really soft at first and then it gets sort of soft but hard. Any tips would be helpful. Thank you.

    The 2 tbs of baby oil and 2 tbs of lime juice should go into the mixture.
    You only need a couple of drops when spreading on the plastic.

    Love this video! I made your recipe a while ago and it was perfect. This time it feels a little softer than usual after sitting in the fridge overnight. Can I knead it with a little extra corn starch to thicken it?

    Hi, I followed this, but I find that if I try to shape something out of it, it slowly oozes out of shape. It's not tacky, though...so I can't think of what's wrong...

    • @plastglass
      @plastglass  Před 10 lety

      Try to add just a hint more of starch, it could be the consistence that's too loose.

  • @sistergabrielfassl8132

    My students made this and we are finding that it collapses as it is being used. How do you remedy that?

    • @plastglass
      @plastglass  Před 10 lety +1

      It will shrink just a tiny bit, but much less than ordinary cold porcelain that you cook in the microwave.

  • @infectedamvs9780
    @infectedamvs9780 Před 10 lety

    Ok. So I guess I should have read the comments before trying this. Anyway, following the ingredients list my porcelain was way too soupy, so I added more cornstarch, maybe in total 2 cups and it started to form a ball even thought still very soft. I am going to let it rest for 24 hours and see what happen. Hope it works because I have no more cornstarch at home.

    • @agatariganostrats5879
      @agatariganostrats5879 Před 9 lety

      Update after 24 hours: cold porcelain is still too soft. I left one little piece out and it dry in about one day, however the batch is still too soft to hold the shape when modeled. I fear I wasted my ingredients.

    You put in the description, 2 tbs baby oil, but in the video you only put 1 tbs. I used the measurements according to the one you wrote in the description, but they turned out too watery.

    please any one answer if knows...help!!!!

    • @misseumoon
      @misseumoon Před 7 lety +1

      Ayesha Atique I always use vinegar and it works fine. I haven't tried olive oil, but I think it would work too. Usually I added vaseline instead of baby oil and it turned out fine. Kinda sticky but smoother.

    • @Fire-Queen
      @Fire-Queen Před 6 lety

      Vinegar is a acidic substitute, so yes! Olive oil will NOT work, you need a Mineral based product, petroleum= baby oil, vaseline, body lotions etc.
