Xfinity Flex Review - It's FREE ... but is it WORTH IT?

- Is the Xfinity Flex a good cord cutting device? If I was brand new to cord cutting -- and I mean BRAND new -- like, I’d never signed up for Hulu, I’d never even heard of Roku, and I’m getting my first-ever streaming device, then the Xfinity Flex would be … okay? Maybe?

Flex is free right now, but some where down the road a charge for flex will appear on your internet bill.
John Gallagher I hope this isn’t true. If that’s the case, I’ll get rid of it.
John Gallagher it’s not free the price comes included on your internet package
@@santiagomares6656 I just got the internet today and grabbed the flex. I didn't see a charge for it anywhere. Is the charge on the bill itemized? If I am getting charged I'll return it
No extra charge, this is the same package price as before. It is a tool the company is using for customer retention. The happier you are the longer you stay a customer. If you enjoy the xfinity flex box experience you might be inclined to upgrade to the full experience of the X1 video platform. See how it works. Although if you choose to stay and just enjoy the flex box, well then that is fine too.
@@ChrisInigma I saw another video explaining the same. Thanks for the detailed response. Appreciate it.
Important to note there don't currently seem to be any options to cast/stream to this device in any of the apps. This is a pretty common/basic feature in most streaming devices. Probably going to return it as such.
Thank you so much for stopping me from slinging my remote into the wall! 🤣 I am a cord cutter and they installed my flex box and left. I have been struggling with this remote for a couple of weeks. Now I understand how it works and I may be able to enjoy more TV now that I have more control over the remote! Thanks again!
Man, I can't thank you enough! The remote issue was really getting to me! LOL!
As our first baby step towards cord cutting, Flex helps. I do look forward to the next step and cutting Flex out all together. It has it's frustrations; for example, if the box gets turned even a smidgen, the remote doesn't work until it's put back into a precise position. Despite the frustrations, it's worth saving 1,000 dollars a year off the bill. Great video by the way; Flex for Dummies!
How you feeling about that "cord cutting" statement in the modern market?
Good review. I just hooked up my flex for the second time and it is a decent box, but yes Roku, fire and Android are definitely much better. The remotes I've always liked with the backlit buttons but it's too big for my taste when it comes to a streaming box remote (love my shield 2019 pro, fire and Roku remotes) :).... I didn't like the UI much and the remote buttons are pretty hard to press compared to the others (just me nit picking). May obviously it does have Hulu but compared to the other streamers I have like you mentioned, it does not have the option to scroll through the add on channels like HBO, STARZ etc. At the top of the Hulu screen like the others do which is a bummer. When I search the networks with flex on Hulu for HBO, it just shows me Conjuring in my stuff which is weird. But hey it was free as only a WiFi customer. Can't beat free! 😃
It is a great idea, but it's just ehhh IMO. Shield tv def beats all of them but at $200 it better lol.
As a experienced cord cutter I'll stick with my amazon 4k fire stick
This would be fine if they would stop raising internet prices
And they'll raise the prices without notifying the customer. My bill went up almost 50% in less than two months after I accepted a year plan and was promised my plan would never change or increase. If that wasn't bad enough they took out some channels and lowered my internet speed. I have no other options where I live cause unfortunately Xfinity is the best "service" that's available in my area. I tried at&t but that was a complete nightmare.
@@isaacalvarez534 you will have options soon. Tmobile Home Internet 5G is being rolled out and Starlink (internet by SpaceX) will start by the Fall. You might have to hang in there for about another 8-12 months but increased competition and options are definitely on their way.
Most of tht stuff comes frm not paying ur bill in a timely matter. If u dont pay ur bill in a 30 day cycle u have 2 months worth of balance aka 50 perecent more then ur monthly rate as a balance u stopped paying what your contract said and now ur paying just to keep ur service on. Its the only way tht can legally occur. #factcheck
@Isaac Alvarez if you are hoping for T-Mobile Home WiFi to be an effective ISP you are gonna find yourself seriously disappointed.
@@isaacalvarez534 same! I called last year trying to cancel because I was tired of my bill changing every other month. They convinced me if I did the contract that my price would be locked in other than maybe taxes. So now its up 10 dollars and when I called to complain they said also it will go up another 10 next month. So what was the point of the contract then? I'm back to it being how it was before the contract. They're so shady. Also told me if I move to an area without comcast I wouldn't be penalized for cancelling, also not true. I shouldn't have to call 5 different people to make sure I'm told correct information
I have been using the flex box for over a month now and it works great for me. Coming from Xfinity cable I like the remote it's will made. I mostly use it to watch CZcams. I don't even miss having cable. I can watch local and cable news clips on demand and live sometimes. Before I got the flex box I thought about getting a subscription to sling but not anymore. Plenty of content.
Do you get local channels and which ones? Do you have to pay extra?
If you want your typical local channels you need to install an indoor HD Antenna (i.e. Mohu 60 mile antenna). Having local channels would come in handy if the Internet is down.
Thank you so much. This just came with my internet router and I asked them what it was and all I got from the employee was “It’s for streaming.” I already have roku, so I might just bring it back.
Thank you for the remote tip I've been at it for hours!!!! I am that somebody out there you helped with this issue!
I never knew that I had it coming so I am happy. I am just moving and don't have a Fire Stick yet so I am grateful and excited to set it up. Good Video. Helped me alot!
Now THIS was helpful! Alot of talking but nothing wasted everything useful and to the point. Thank you for not going off on a tangent.
Thanks for this. I was wondering whether to order it. But I already have a Roku and I don't see this adding anything to it. If anything, it seems like going through a lot of aggravation to get less than what I already have.
Thanks for the setup tips!
Excellent content and delivery. Thank you.
To pair the remote to the XI6 you first point it to the front of the box with the small white light. Once paired you can hide the box. The remote works over a RF single rather than IR.
This unit was offered when I completed my cheap 1 year starter offer with Xfinity. I picked a new offer for existing customers which dropped the bill from 69.00 to 45.00. I use my own cable modem and a separate WiFi router. The flex easily connected to WiFi and was up and running. Mine must be a stripped down model. No number buttons on the remote. I used it on my projector, since my main big tv already has streaming. The directional, fussy IR remote sucks! I need to see if this one has an RF option.. I doubt it does.
Thanks for making this ! I just ordered mine !
GREAT Instructional Video Dude! Thanks! Now I understand!
I got mine yesterday, it is very well made, has an hdmi input and output on back ,he failed to mention controller is actually nice made well and is very easy to use.I think sometimes reviewers hate on products because they know that's what people want to hear. Hulu will be available in March. I Had roku and apple tv in the early years and trust me they didn't either have hardly any apps. For a free 4k streaming device it's very nice and quality made .I believe xfinity made right choice with this for internet only customers,I believe before long you will have the spotify and disney before it's all said and done , I suggest if you can get this for free I would ,you can always send it back but I believe you will see it's TRUE potential before long.
When I got my Flex device and connected it, the amount of data I used increased from about 650 GB per month to almost a TB. I sent it back after 2 months and went back to Roku.
Yes the streaming box is one if many of their scams. Wjen I got my flex box I watched TV on it for like 2 weeks and I went over a terabyte of data. SCAM! I returned it
@@km-nq4tj how do you check your bites?
Excellent Review. Thank you. Very helpful.
I just switched to Comcast internet only and just received the Flex. This video was helpful. I already use Roku, but on my TV with multiple HDMI ports. I might try hooking both up (except, of course, it adds a little more clutter under the TV having two streaming boxes). Thanks!
OH MY GOSH thank you! I was having the same issue with my remote lol. I appreciate this! I feel so slow now
Literally I’m terrified ordering stuff “free from them” my bill jumped from 75 to 100 to 250... terrified
man this happened to me too
If only their was a internet Hulu. Your charge one thing instead of all the extras and “taxes”
@@yuriilove7260 Do you get taxed twice? mine says tv tax 7$ and regular tax7$
DUARTE yesss they put tax on everything and on each device
@@yuriilove7260 now i see why they gave me the fkex box for free, to tax me later
The remote is awesome. I love the mic. I have xfinity cable on my stream box as well as Hulu nextflix CZcams peacock etc. There's really only a couple of apps I use that aren't on this box. The best part is I can speak a title into the mic and it pulls any option from any of the apps.
Does the voice control work for you tube? My smart tv doesnt have that so yeah I would definitely use it if it works.
They just added Hulu this month but I was really hoping for CZcams TV. I have to use my PS4 just for the CZcams TV.
New Update: Flex comes with a new XR-16 Remote just for the wireless box. It only has very few buttons and not the unnecessary ones.
Yes puneet sir you are correct.
Thank you this CZcams was helpful. I just received my Flex, and yes it is convenient, and somewhat easy. I had the same issue with my remote set up, and wasted plenty of time searching for the basics I am used to on my Firestick or Roku. That being said, the Flex appears to be a good introduction to Cord Cutting for a Newbie, or someone who gets frustrated quickly at electronics or changes. The Flex will be easier to use for guests because it is easy point & shoot & immediate results. The Home Screen mirrors the Roku or Firestick and that will help the faint hearted Cord Cutters.
Got mine today. Thank you dear love your videos. #maasaigal was here from Oregon
Great video review. It’s very accurate given my experience. But a couple of things. The first flex box is free. Each additional one is a monthly fee. It also does not provide any local channels whatsoever. I ended up getting rid of my flex boxes and replacing them with 4K Amazon firesticks. More apps and you can jailbreak them to get tons of new, free movies.
The remote is really cool honestly. Buttons are a bit stiff but still nice. Remotes has motion sensor; when moved, it lights up for easy access in dark.
I wish my Fire TV remotes lit up. I do like how the Flex remote lights up.
Good review thank you I was struggling with wether I wanted to ADD this to already having the Amazon box since I just finally went only internet! Looks like the only benefit to it for us would be Live local TV but for us that would just be to access local new....still not sure if it's worth the effort, soooo it's still in the box lol. Thanks again
I love it. I now get the Choice package for $20/month where I get all my locals and can record. With Philo and Xfinity’s Choice package total $40/month just using my Flex Box.
This box would be great if they support their own Stream App to watch their TV service without needing to be in the X2 ecosystem. They are missing a great opportunity to replace a Roku or nVidia Shield and add in their apps on top then it would be great.
We do actually, it's called the Xfinity stream app and it lets you watch both streaming and cable service without having to rent a cable box every month, as long as your TV is smart of course
I have one. I don’t ever use it. The only good thing about it is the remote; I prefer it over the Roku remote due to clean design and backlighting.
I use the Roku remote app on my cell to make it easier to control my Roku content.
I've had my Flex for less than a week, and I'm going back to my Roku. This was a great informational video. Flex has some work to do.
One thing I noticed that you didn't mention is that if you have X1 Flex system, you can add broadcast TV (for $$$) to get regular TV channels without adding any other hardware. I just wanted the local channels, so I subscribed to the minimum cable offering.
But the really slick thing for us 'non-cord-cutters' is that you don't need a regular cable box at the TV like you used to have to. When using the little Flex box, your regular TV channels come wirelessly from the Gateway (Modem/Router) just like the streaming channels! And you use the remote to 'combine' your streaming and your regular TV into one spot and one Remote. And the voice input on the Remote allows you to search for content and you may find some on the TV channels and others on the streaming channels all grouped together.
This reduces clutter quite a bit, because now you don't have to have the old style cable box at each TV or a cable outlet either. You just place one of these little flex boxes with each TV and it connects wirelessly back to the Gateway, and you get regular TV and streaming channels on every TV. There can be as many as 5 TVs hooked to one Gateway this way.
Hulu will actually be available on the X1 platform, as well as Flex. Also Peacock will be available as well!
How can I sign in into hulu ? I click on the application but it doesn't show any sing in options .. help please .
Hulu is active now on my box
Good timing on this, thanks. I ended getting one to put in my PC room to turn one of my spare monitors into a smart TV for those times when I'm fiddling with my Linux VM box and don't have access to working browsers while configuring things.
Thank you. You answered all my questions. I'm retired & wondered if it was worth fooling with since I have a smart tv. Think I will leave the device in the free box it came in.
I know new products come out all the time, but could you do a full review on the new gateway from xfinity the XB8 6E?? I’m unable to find anything on CZcams at all about the brand new xfinity gateway router/ modem
They sent me 2 so I'm getting charged for it and they wont do anything about it. So, both are going back, and I'm considering FiOs now
Sticking with my Roku devices. One day when I'm actually able to switch ISPs, I don't want to be stuck with their boxes.
Roku is the best plus I have AT&T internet
I just got mine and I like it so far. I had only one fire stick and two TVs so I just put it on the tv without a fire stick and it does what I want it to
How can I find out what local Live TV channels are included? Are they the same as the regular Xfinity cable channels? Also, do you only need one Flex box to run all the TVs in the home?
The remote is directional before setup so you don’t end up pairing your neighbor’s Flex or them pairing yours.
🤯
Damn I can't I imagine living that Close to each other lol
Looks like the same apps available through their xfi system.
Thanks! I was getting ready to connect this to my Roku TV then I watched your video and saw that it would be redundant. Probably saved me a lot of headaches. I like to keep things simple so I will leave this in the box.
Can I connect flex and roku at the same time?
So, can you sideload or download new apps or apks onto this device?
No on both questions
7:00 A whole lot of missing apps! I'll stick to my Roku and Fire Stick.
Charles Montague flex is nothing new!
Charles Montague fire stick is kind of shitty now
You still need internet.

Thanx for info and stay with my Roku
You didn't mention the voice control feature that is integrated into the apps, and the numbers on the remote work kinda like t9 on home phones and older cells to look up programs
This is greet to hear, small steps for big room for development on Network carrier.
What's the development all about cause the whole hype most network carriers spend millions of dollars on commercial is quite outstanding.
There are other(more Affordable)cell phone plans that’s on the verizon network,And offers Verizon 5G,which you can get also with your verizon unlimited plans.
I have experienced different faults from my verizon postpaid account but,i fell verizon just setup shop to rip me and other customers,i have met my foe with verizon,my clear opinion about them are bad and see myself not using them, except i can get the help i need with resolving the issues i have with them with my verizon unlimited postpaid account.
@@isabelleite3235 I used to be in that category of verizon screwed over customer before, this is without a doubt common, however I met a guy who was able to assist me, I suppose It has some thing to work along the initial limit that's placed concerning the account when it was first made,he defined to me what was wrong and even helped me upgrade, at a pretty less expensive rate, it took him much less than an hour to clear up the problem, here is his e mail {josephbergg@gmail.com}. though do counsel him, he would possibly be capable to assist you
Thanks for the replies . I switched from prepaid mobile service to Verizon With Same insurance as my old prepaid carrier for $ 45 a Month unlimited . I obtained a $ 100 visa gift card plus free cable on my Smartphone free flex free peacock and a free streaming for the cable . I turned into looking at other mobile services, however the package deal Verizon gave me with the Help of Joseph is one of a kind....
I just got rid of my cable and connected my flex box. I love the remote design with backlight and voice command but that’s about it.
It doesn’t matter what i watch the screen goes black and then goes back to the main menu after 5-7 minutes. I’ve tried resetting, refreshing and checked all the settings. (Possibly just a bad box)
I also noticed it can not be powered off so i wonder if it’s going to eat up my data at night while it’s not being used.
There has to be a reason why they’re giving it away for free.
Curious to see if i’ll have a separate tax for internet and tv now.
Have two Rokus. Just dumped cable TV and installed the flex on the TV I watch most. It is a dumb TV. Now I’m trying to figure out how I stream content from the web (History Channel’s Alone) etc. I follow directions well but much of this is new to me. You mention it is better to use a Cat 5 (yes I know we are on to Cat 6) but I’m unclear whether I’m running that from the wall to the Flex or from the TV to the Flex? I’d try it but the Sony tv is hanging on the wall and fairly challenging to maneuver myself. Thanks
Do you have any information on X1 where you can use you Xfinity Flex to purchase Choice TV? It’s offered on the Xfinity Flex for $30 / month, no contract, can cancel any time.
They're way too late with this. Maybe 10 years ago, it would've been viable. But, now, we are all into our other streaming devices and this really doesn't bring anything the others don't already do better.
it has a full remote that makes it much easier for typing and navigation
@@1jasonover You can use your phone as a remote for at least Roku, and probably Apple TV & Fire Stick too. With your phone you have a keyboard and can use voice-to-text. At least for me the remote is secondary to the main box.
I get to watch stuff from xfinity I cannot watch on my other devices. Stuff I paid for, stuff I had recorded. Free streams of shows I like from their own platform.
They have one thing they do better, the answer is the voice remote. That alone makes it a good pick. Also free, you can't beat free
@RyuHayabusa751 yes but everything else costs money like I said free is hard to beat. Plus no service to date has nailed the voice remote yet. Alot of them may have have them and be able to do simple things like "Open Netflix" however none that I have had experience with will let me say "Wolf of Wall Street" then search through all the available watch options in seconds and bring right to where I can watch it.
For example, fire stick will search Amazon but not sift through Netflix and open Netflix for me to watch it kind of deal.
Yea you can't download apps but the vast majority that matter or I should say the ones that I subscribe to are already there with the exception of Crunchyroll for anime but meh its not gunna kill me
Did not even mention the voice remote. Makes controlling it a lot easier. I agree though. Roku is better.
Voice just makes it easier to listen to your conversations. Paranoid? Maybe a little since Comcast doesn't allow end user to look behind the curtain. I'd be happy for starters if the setup would allow setting a static IP.
Thanks for your informative and Candor presentation. Though as one of millions of Comcast/Xfinity hate club I was contemplating on whether it was time to give them the benefit of doubt by ordering that "Flex view" thing they have been bugging me about for the past two years! Coming across this youtube convinced me that I have been doing the RIGHT thing by keeping my involvement with Comcast to the minimum. After all, they are in it for their own benefits NOT mine... and I am sure I would have regretted it, if I would have decided to fall for their gimmickry in the way of hidden fees added to my #INTERNET only bills.. Just like they always DO... So thanks for this video once again.
Does the new box Will still allow you to Record your favorite Show ? Or only the x1starter box ?
You didn’t mention the main feature is the VOICE REMOTE. So much interaction like an Alexa
It took him an hour to pair the remote...
I guess that feature is for next time 😀
I saw Sling, which is odd. I also heard you get ESPN 3 free which is cool. How about Netflix, Amazon, Etc.. 4k.Atmos.
Thanks for this video because the remote was stressing me the hell out.
I'm having trouble "casting to" this device, do I need to do anything different than I did for the fire stick or Google Chromecast?
I am sticking with my Roku for now. Thanks, Xfinity but not today.
I love it.. plus they adding Hulu Mar 19th and Peacock in April
You still like it?
Spotify is on there now too.
@@theinsite2668 love it
No Disney+ :(
When you were setting up with the remote, did you try dictating your passwords and so forth using the speak button or did you just painfully navigate each letter, number by pushing buttons? lol, Just asking as roku box lets you do that which every box they make these days should have that standard feature. I was also wondering if someone has an older model Samsung, that perhaps they could pull in the NextGen channels with this box too.
have to tell ya, Ya did a great job of explaining
Yo! Again, when are gonna get a "Disney flex annual pass" review? And maybe compare to others?

I use my own modem and router and I agree it seems weak to me also
You can use the xi6 with your own gear now....Comcast says you can't but you can I even have it hard wired into my Netgear router and my XB7 is in bridged mode.
Very well explained
Thanks. I just renewed my annual Xfinity contract (Internet only), and they sent me this. No explanation about what it was and whether I needed to install it. But I found this helpful video (thank you!). I seldom watch movies or use my smart TV, but I do have an Amazon Firestick and my son shares his Netflix account with me for the occasional movie or video that I want to watch. After viewing your video, I'm concluding that I don't need to bother installing this but that I should keep it in a drawer and subscribe to your videos in case they add something useful. Does that sound right?
you'll be charged an equipment rental fee monthly of you don't use the flex. send it back
I'm passing on this xfinity has been pushing this hard because I'm a internet subscriber.
Their pushing it to give you more reason to choose them over another internet provider like FiOS. It's free so no point not to use it

It's also free with your internet through Xfinity... All these other services cost extra

A little off topic from the video but for anyone wondering about x1 4K content.. I just got the new 4K wireless cable box. I was worried about the WiFi signal not being strong enough since I keep it around bunch of devices on far end of the house.. so far the signal has been fine! The 4K quality is pretty good but I still prefer streaming 4K from streaming apps through my Samsung smart TV.. also, anyone trying to choose between Xfinity X1or Fios; I’ve had both and I very much prefer X1.. the Fios platform is outdated and needs some serious upgrading and the internet speed for gaming & streaming is about a tie.
I never heard about the flex
I’m further behind than you. I hadn’t heard about it(and probably still wouldn’t) until I called & said that I wanted to lower my bill by dropping the cable while keeping the phone & internet. The agent was faster than Usain Bolt to offer this service after she tried to get me some poopy short term deal beefier going back to my sky high rate.
If it would let me use sling id use it. They won't so it sits in my closet. I tried to tell them not to send it but they insisted. It looks sleek let more apps be available otherwise people won't use it.
Holly D can you send it to me? I’ll use it.
Does it have a full live TV X1 experience or the clunky roku version?
I just moved and have more tv’s than streaming devices, so for now it’s functional. I don’t like that I can’t add apps to it (CZcams TV), and I can’t cast my phone to it. BUT...they did just recently add some live channel streaming subscription apps to it, so I’m still hoping for CZcams TV to be added 🤞🏼 I do have Netflix and Amazon Prime so I still have a lot of stuff to watch on it. I don’t love it, but don’t mind it either. Thanks for your review
So what does this do that my smart TV doesn't already cover? Maybe I'm missing something 🤔
Craven Moorehead that’s what I’m saying
