What's Next for 3D Mario Games?

- For the longest time, each new mario game made sense! Expand on the previous game, use the same formula, barely include luigi.
So you’d think after all these games it should be easy to predict what’s to come next, right?
We’ve all thought at some point that the next game will probably be odyssey 2. I would know- ive seen it in my comments
And maybe its true. Maybe Nintendo wil* go with this as an easy way to make money
But i think they’re planning something else, something radical.
Every 3d mario has some form of innovation
Definition: to make changes in something, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products.
Mario 64 set the precedent for every 3d game to come, including huge levels that you can replay to complete different challenges
Mario galaxy introduced gravity mechanics, allowing you to orbit around worlds and do platforming in a completely unique way
And Sunshine… had watering hose
3D mario games don’t come around often, and when they do they change the game with a big new twist
Odyssey… did not do this. Moreso, it expanded on previous elements like the sandbox worlds of 64, the cool companions and refining the gameplay.
This is gonna make it hard to do a sequel if you can only really add new creatures for cappy to posses, or make a new donk city 2 where there are more ways for Mario to jump off buildings

That actually happened to me. I deleted some of dad's stuff (not knowing it was important) and I didn't get a computer myself until after he died.
I did that on a 100% NSMB2 file save...
And I only got my own 100% save file 7 years after

Mario odyssey was genuinely the most fun Ive ever had completing a game. It was so fun to explore, find moons. And find new enemies. I would even be happy with redesigned worlds, and new moons to find. It was so unique and that’s what I loved about it. I really hope they decide to do an odyssey 2 some day!!!
In contrast, I found it one of the least fun mario games due to how easy the moon's were making it feel like they lacked value. Glad to see some people liked it though

@@mulux8020 nah I'm not amazing at gaming, the game was just easy, I completed the main game in 5 hours the first try which is much less than any other 3d mario (bar bowsers fury)

@@mkgeostarthey don’t lack value for some people who are casual exploration gamers. If Nintendo make all moons difficult, casual gamers will complain. If Nintendo make all moons easy, hardcore gamers will complain. So they decided to add both kinds of moons.
What do you mean Odyssey didn't add anything new? Cappy completely changed the gameplay with the cap jumps and captures. Plus it was the first 3D Mario without levels, instead having actual worlds. There are lots of new ways I could see them expand the game in a sequel. New Kingdoms can offer new mechanics and captures, similar to how Galaxy 2 added new power-ups and levels to Galaxy.
Personally, I think we'll see Odyssey 2, and then we'll see a new 3D mario after that. I hope that the next console cycle will release two 3d marios :D
My hope is the next console will launch in November 2024 with Super Mario Odyssey 2, then a new 3D Mario will drop in about 2028.

We won't see an odyssey 2. It felt so beta like. The like of Sunshine. Both great games, but it was no Galaxy that felt fleshed out from the get go because it was made for the WII specifically.

I think a new open world mario would kind of look like Wind Waker, where the levels are islands you can ride to
The previous 2 Zelda games have been some of my all time favorites, a darker tone Mario game with a giant open world like BOTW and TOTK would be absolutely awesome

If you want that, play Jak and Daxter on the PS2. It's like Mario 64 or Galaxy, but in a full open world. It's probably my favorite 3D platformer ever.

@@SogehtMatheIts fully open world in the sense that all the levels and areas are connected and exist within the same map with next to no loading screens but it isn’t like a sandbox style open world game like BOTW/TOTK if that makes sense

Mario Oddysey 2 should have large sky/sea areas that you have to cross with the Oddysey to get to the next place, maybe some small floating islands with moons or secret levels or something

I think Nintendo should make a 3D reimagining of Super Mario World in like a Bowser's Fury style.
So the background map will be a more fleshed out version of the original Super Mario World Map that has the individual levels inside which can be started by going through a starting gate and finished by crossing a giant gate like from the original game (as well as checkpoints in between).
Levels can have multiple goals aside from just getting to the end (and secret exits). For example, collecting all the dragon coins in the level could be another goal.
There will be switch palaces like the original game that will unlock new power ups (and more can be added than just the 4 from the original game).
Once you get the feather, you can fly much easier around the map, but the ultimate flyer would be once you get a blue Yoshi.
There could be stuff that happens in the background that changes the way a level might play, similar to Bowser's Fury, except maybe stuff like different weather, maybe Bowser or one of his kids comes with a clown car and causes mayhem, or Kamek comes along and changes the level with his wand, plenty of options.
And overall the levels within the map should stay as true to the original as best as they can so that a fan of Super Mario World would recognize it, but it would be a 3D version of a 2D level so it might be tough, but that's why I say best they can.

I don't play games anymore, but Mario is my all time favorite. An open world mario, with mini bosses, and bosses around the world, each "map" or "world" in a normal mario game could be a zone in a open world mario.

If Bowser's Fury is to Wind Waker then the next 3D Mario game will be to Breath Of The Wild/Tears Of The Kingdom. Wind Waker's ocean was filled in with traversable land in BOTW/TOTK and I think that a future 3D Mario game will basically fill in the lake of Bowser's Fury.
A massive open world playground for Mario with intelligent tutorials (ie - Great Plateau/Great Sky Island) and funneled entry points for courses in the same way that Bowser's Fury did. Hell, certain areas of Tears Of The Kingdom worked the same way, think of the ascent to the Water Temple with the low gravity bubble course or the trampoline course on the ascent to the Wind Temple. That could have easily been a mechanic in a Mario game, albeit with more mobility and 60fps.
How about you eat a cheez it?
what if you could team up with bowser's minions? *RANT INCOMING*
Goomba - would allow you to stomp on him for extra height. Maybe you could summon multiple for a Goomba stack.
Koopa Troopa - Could use their shell to move around and defeat enemies.
ParaTroopa - You could use the shell to float briefly, could be used in combination with the Goomba.
Hammer Bro - Lets you throw hammers into hard to reach areas. Maybe you could swap to Fire Bro to melt ice.
Spiny - Wear the shell to headbutt enemies!
Monty Mole - could dig in the ground for a few seconds.
Shy Guy - Wear the mask, allowing you to slip past hordes of enemies unnoticed (Maybe Shy Guys could still see you though)
Maybe each ability could only be used in its own island, but the final boss lets you use them all, making for a cinematic end to the game.
These graphics you are making are A tier

Something that would be awesome but highly unlikely, is Yoshi being used for traversal BUT can take to the sky using his final smash. This way it grants him the ability to fly places
MarioKart XD XD XD and some of the planes from MarioParty games.

Something that I’d think (or kinda hope) for Mario odyssey 2 (cause you said it wouldn’t work that well because of innovation) is that there is like ocean and sea between islands and levels to fully connect everything together. And since Nintendo likes making fun little gameplay elements, make it so then you would be able to ride the odyssey as a boat to get to places (or just warp). But maybe there could also be some islands with little moons that are little prizes for exploring. They could also give Mario new hats to choose from like a magic hat that lets you summon a random capture or dk barrel blast upwards or absorb projectiles and spit them back to towards a rock to get a moon. Or maybe punching gloves (like in the bowser fight) to punch and fight enemies, or to destroy things that lead to a level, or maybe have it so then you can punch a shockwave.

Honestly before this video, I was thinking of a hybrid of Galaxy and Odyssey.
I honestly feel like Galaxy 3 isn't that farfetched. The idea still has so much potential, and I feel like Nintendo knows it would be an actual money printer, especially if it were the headliner for the Switch 2.

But personally, I don’t really understand the fad for open-world Mario games. My favourite 3D Mario ever is 3D World, and mostly because of the linear level-based gameplay. I really just want another normal 3D Mario platformer.

Deleting my dad's save data... same boat, but with Super Mario 64. He had a 117 star save. But hey, I topped him years later, getting all 120 stars. Plus completing the game with 31 stars, and 16 stars.
the way you made this video is a masterpiece
I think Galaxy 2 was innovative and introduced new platform ideas and mechanics which are overlooked. It introduced flip swaps where the platforms change with a specific character movement and beat blocks where platforms change with the music. In some levels, the elemental makeup of that level changes like turning water or lava into ice which changes the interaction with that level. They were a bit underused though.
Imo I think galaxy 1 was far better story wise and level layout, galaxy 2 was better in every other aspect.

To me Galaxy 2 felt like a half-baked step towards the 3D land games that came shortly after, where Galaxy 1 had that rich, magical atmosphere.
@@meowmasterL346 to me, the only step towards the 3D games was the change in the hub UI. I feel like the atmosphere is very dependent on who’s playing. For me Galaxy 1 had a darker more spacey and lonely atmosphere while Galaxy 2 had a more colorful and exciting atmosphere.
@@Droobie03 I can agree with that 👌 I think the dark/foreboding atmosphere of space is what made the first one so amazing to me as a kid (fave galaxy was literally deep dark galaxy w/kingfin boss lol)
The brighter/cheery sky in most smg2 levels reminded me of nsmb I think.
I would love to see Super Mario Universe. Open world Galaxy/Odyssee/Bowser Fury hybrid. Ridable Lumas to travel between planets, completely open world with the cappy mechanic back.

Super Mario Bros: Wonder will likely scratch that 2D/3D multiplayer Mario game itch. For a while until a new full 3D Mario drops.
Mario galaxy is one of my favorite Mario games, but also in general just one of my favorite games!
My money would be on the next mario game to be a tie in with the movie, a licensed movie game developed by Sierra Interactive with no involvement from Nintendo, in which you play as John Mario and his sidekick Elf-Man as they fight the evil King Koopa (voiced by Gilbert Gottfried). All of Mario's famous catchphrases would be lifted directly the audio of the movie for added authenticity, such as "eat dust, dirtbag", "I'm jusss coolio, jabroni" and my personal favourite "looks like today was the wrong day to quit being a Catholic"
