  • In this video, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Akwasi Boah, a Neurosurgeon with Texas Back Institute about life as a Neurosurgeon.
Dr. Boah graduated from Saint Joseph’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Health Services and a minor in Biology. Dr. Boah received his medical degree from the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. He then went on to complete a surgical internship at the New York University School of Medicine, and a residency in Neurological Surgery. He also completed an Instructorship in Spinal Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Department of Neurosurgery. He now specializes in Spinal Neurosurgery and Oncologic Spinal Neurosurgery.
He is the author and co-author of several research papers and book chapters, and has given oral presentations at several locations including the NYU Department of Neurosurgery, and the annual NMA Section of Neurology and Neurosurgery Gathering in 2010. He is a member of several professional organizations including AANS, Alpha Omega Alpha, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In addition to English, Dr. Boah is also proficient in several languages including Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.

I love neurosurgeons saved my life for sure. I got a "rare" ependymoma tumor at the age of 12. That was found because I had caused it to bleed as it was inside of my spine along with being in-between the vertebrae. It was woven around my spinal cord particularly my sciatic nerve. It was a risky procedure due to the odds of losing the movement in my legs, however, I had no choice as I was passing out and throwing up constantly as a result of the pain. The team ended up getting all the tumor out and though I had to relearn how to walk I would say a tremendous success other than some minor nerve damage. On a plus side I gave em my tumor to study since it was rare and my family didn't pay a thing so thats gnarly lol. Im 22 now and forever grateful for medical professionals.

It genuinely not trying to be like sad or anything but spiraled me at 12 into a really really dark place because I was so upset with myself and the fact I couldn't help myself. I think it’s important to remember everyone’s different, there’s no standard for a neurosurgeon’s lifestyle, there’s always steps you can take to have a more active or “better” family and home life - especially after residency. If you’re really that worried and not as passionate about neuro, perhaps it’s more ideal to look for a speciality that has a better work-life balance

Family? The neurosurgeon i rotated with, his kids would visit him at work.

Even before considering medicine I always loved watching neurosurgeries from this channel, from doctor farhad m limonadi, with lots of cool neurosurgery videos, and I'm thinking about following the neurosurgery path and as a black man myself, seeing you and doctor akwasi really inspires me and make me feel confident, this video spoke to me. Much respect and support. To all health care worker and provider present and future..... it's a calling and a purpose to serve other. It's not just a job turn it into a habit but make it a lifestyle. Treat all people with dignity and respect but speak into them postive, encouraging, uplifting words. Small contributions make the biggest impact to those who need it.

They get paid so much to do what they love that they can actually use that money to fund their own projects to help 3rd world countries, especially when getting funding is so difficult nowadays!
