  • Sunday the 14th of July saw me in the picturesque Glen Nevis in the heart of the Mamores, to climb Stob Bán & Mullach Nan Coirean. These are two of the finest Munros to climb on a perfect day, and with the mighty Ben Nevis towering in the background, you just know you are somewhere truly special.
    The day before had seen me trying to bag Stob Na Doire on the Buachaille Etive Mór, but I was denied due to adverse weather. Today though was to be a different story, today was all about success.
    Stob Bán 999m, is one of the finest peaks in the Mamores, its quartzite summit giving magnificent views. A very fine ridge traverse links it to its westerly neighbour Mullach nan Coirean 939m, giving an excellent circuit.

    Hey there, Douglas.
    Just catching up with my YT subscriptions and wondered if you've got any new videos coming up? Regrettably, I don't have enough experiences or own the necessary gear to go out during the Winter months, so I'm just patiently waiting for Spring to come round and satisfying my Munro bagging urge via documented adventures on channels like your own. That said, I've been inspired to invest in a camera and will try my hand at film making when the good weather returns, so I'll be sure to do a bit of spamming if/when there's something to show haha. Anyway, hope you're managing to make it out to the hills and looking forward to seeing where you visit next!

      Hi Fraser, thanks for getting in touch. I was lucky enough to have been over in Japan last month and although Mt Fuji is closed by the government for the winter, I did manage to find another mountain to climb that was like no other mountain I’ve ever seen. I’m hoping to upload that video this week as I came back with an absolute ton of footage from Japan and I’ve been busy editing away. The mountain one will be the first to upload once I’ve finished some colour grading.
      Aside from that I think it’ll be the new year before I’m back out.
      Best Regards,
      Douglas 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      @@DouglasGilgallon I must admit I'm somewhat envious to hear this as Japan is a place I've wanted to visit for some time! I have a few pals who have been and they've all said it was an incredible experience, so I'm looking forward to seeing your footage and seeing what the Japanese equivalent of a Munro is like. Hope it was a fun trip and all the best with the editing :)

      Cheers Pete, yeah the sunscreen was lathered on but still missed a bit on the back of my neck and suffered for a few days. Lol.
      I even recognised the bit you slipped on in your vlog. A pal of mine climbed it the day before and almost fell multiple times on the decent which is fairly steep I have to admit, she managed to stay upright only to fall a few feet away from the wooden style at the Forrest. She had to travel home caked in mud! Total bummer...literally! 🤪

    I was here on that day! One of the best days i've had. Completed 8 of the mamores in amazing blue skies, had already done the eastern 2 munros another day so didn't need to go there. Got a picture of the helicopter but I was at An Gearanach by that point. Was at Stob Ban by 8:15 and continued eastward after that, not sure if I seen you. Truely was a spectacular day, biggest issue was finding water streams on such a warm day.
    I remember one of the hardest points was ascending Mullach nan Coirean before jumping a deer fence, it was steep and got eaten by midgies the whole way through the ferns, even some points I was having to scramble up through it. Looking now at the route I have followed a different path that what walkhighlands recommends, planning goes a long way haha.
    Great footage and well done.

      Hey Craig, great to hear from someone who has experienced this great day in the mountains also. We probably did pass each other by the sounds of things. First time I’d seen a helicopter on any mountain before and it stayed over Ben Nevis for some time. Passed a few streams coming up through the Corrie, but it’s always a risk drinking all your water in the way up in the hope you’ll find a stream further up eh?
      Did you record and upload any footage yourself? Feel free to leave a link if you did.

    Hey Douglas, an absolutely superb video, walk and weather you had there plus anyone who captures a waterfall and fox glove in succession is good in my mind 😏
    As if I thought you couldn't get any more manly... you bag munros with a roller derby visor... I mean... c'mon! 😂 the only way a guy could better that would be to roller skate up a Munro 😂
    All joking aside, a great vlog and another inspiration to get folks outside 👍🏻

      Hello my friend, all is well. Apart from the pandemic I also developed a burstitis on my heel and so couldn’t wear walking boots (or many other type of shoes for that matter), without pain developing after only a short time. I’m still waiting to have it seen too (low priority, I get that)! But yeah, when I can I hope to get back for at least a few big names I didn’t yet climb.

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Grant here is a breakdown on my filming equipment.
      GoPro Hero 7 Black which can be found online under £250.
      the audio is okay on its own but I invested in a mic and a wind buff. The mic is the Edutige 001, (£30 on Amazon), however you will have to buy the GoPro adapter as it cannot be directly plugged into the GoPro but makes a huge difference in audio quality and in noise reduction on some very windy hills. The adapter is about £40 and a bit of sharp practice from GoPro but there is no way around buying it if you want to plug in a mic.
      You can get an aluminium housing for the GoPro 7 which has a built in housing for the GoPro adapter. (£20)
      And lastly I use a smatree q3 telescopic pole which is cheeper then the GoPro pokes and is just as good in my opinion and comes with a detachable tripod screw in mount. (£15).
      Smatree also do rechargeable GoPro batteries and come with a charger.
      It’s a few bucks to get going but the quality of footage and sound will improve dramatically.
      Hope this helps Grant.
      Douglas 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      @@DouglasGilgallon That's amazing Mate. Yea the hero 7 is £250 on Amazon right now. The mic is a must as you cant hear about 20% of my uploads. LOL Am off to google now. Thanks for the help. Oh and look for my first gadget review, going up soon.

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 4 lety +1

      No problem Grant, the etiudige mic is a very powerful condenser mic and pics up audio from great distances away. You will be very impressed with it for sure. I bought a wind muffler to go with it and used the string tightener from the muffler to anchor the mic to my GoPro as it doesn’t snap into the adapter as much as I’d like, so can be prone to falling out if doing harsh movements etc. You’ll see what I mean when you get it all put together. Lol
      Best Regards,
      Douglas. 😉👍🏼

    Hi Douglas. Sorry to bother you again, Am still hunting for a good deal on a hero 7 or 8. Might get one in the black Friday sales. Was wanting to ask what software you use to edit your vids and does it do 4K. I have just been using windows photo but its very basic. Oh and I am still uploading new vids and gave my channel a wee revamp. The name was partly inspired by yours truly.

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Grant, never a bother to answer a question so feel free to ask anything you think I can help with.
      I was using windows movie maker for a good while right up until the Buachaille Etive Mor curved ridge vlog, but that was limiting and I couldn’t colour grade using it.
      I currently use my daughters Apple Mac IMovie for editing. I find it very simple and easy to use and the editing suite is so simple even I can navigate it. I use it mainly to colour grade and moving forward for slow motion shots which I’m trying to introduce into my next vlog.
      Good luck bargain hunting for the GoPro in the sales, and thanks for the nod in your channel revamp.
      It’s great to see folks like yourself making vlogs of your own adventures as you now are unquestionably inspiring other folk in turn to get out there and start living and exploring.
      Hope the info regarding the editing software helps.
      Best regards to you Grant,
      Douglas. 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Spoiled it with the disco music. Is that what you want to hear when you are outdoors ? Does it add something that you feel was lacking on you climb ? I don't understand people who think they can improve on nature by adding noise pollution to it.

    • @DouglasGilgallon
      @DouglasGilgallon  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for your comment dave english, I definitely love the sheer whiteness and the sounds of nature when I’m actually outdoors in can assure you.
      The music is simply to facilitate a section with no sound, and to keep the footage dynamic. I appreciate it won’t be for everyone.
      Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
