Francesinha: Portuguese Croque Monsieur

Chef Filipa Ferreira from Escolas Do Turismo De Portugal shows us how to make a Francesinha, or Portuguese Croque Monsieur. Francesinha, means “little Frenchie” in Portuguese, and is a sandwich filled with ham, sausage, and steak. The decadent sandwich is covered with melted cheese then a hot sauce made with beer, white wine and port is poured over the top.

"Oh no, I don't have ham and cheese to make croque-monsieur. Let me use ham, cheese, beefsteak, salsichas, chouriço and an egg instead"... I don't think they thought the story about him not having the ingredients through ! Absolutely glorious dish, though.

The story of how it started in wrongfully told. It started with the Croque Monsieur and experimenting with the rest of ingredientes that were added in different fases until it got to be the Francesinha. It had nothing to do with lack of the ingredients.
Sooo, as someone from Porto this kinda is my expertise, I also don't think this was a good explanation, he clealrly had enough ingredients to experiment lol.
There are two types of sauce you can do, not one.
Essential to the character of this meal is that the fries are missing in the presentation, as they are served on the side and people just mix them once the sauce is poured on the francesinha, I'm really sorry but it's as important as the sandwich to miss that is to miss the dish... As someone stated fried egg is an option added on top and very popular.
I would only eat this dish in Porto district or if the chef has been to porto or done proper research, ive seen too many people claiming to know how to make it and often its not even remotely close to the original variations, it's a freestyle dish but certain steps are still mandatory in my opinion if you want to call it a Francesinha.

Forget brunch... if you eat one of these for lunch, you won't be doing anything else for the rest of the day. This is the perfect hangover food, but it will leave you sleepy for the rest of the day. By the way, I'm from Porto - the city that made this sandwich in the first place.
