True concert footage of Quicksilver Messenger Service remains rare, and any hardcore fan of the band will want to get the limited edition 3 DVD set "Recoil" which includes never before seen video (seen by me anyway) of Quicksilver Messenger Service live in concert! A truly bitchin' extended psychedelic version of Who Do You Love is my personal fave! Watching the duel lead guitars of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan is something to see!
anyway, get "Recoil" here while it's still available

John Cipollina has been a foremost success in a time of disparity for American citizens. Still he shined his way to the top of the charts if not in sales , musicianship . QMS was always a great group and folks who had the pleasure to catch a show were very fortunate. As far as Nick Gravenites goes, not enough good can be done for the man.

Hi Earl, Initially I thought you correct about the thumb pick but I watched some more Videos, specifically one that is titled here on youtube as " ONCE - John Cipollina & Friends" and 59 minutes in There is some close-up of him picking on his Black Carvin Guitar and by God I clearly detected a white wrap around Bluegrass style pick on his thumb. I play guitar and depending the song, I switch between flat pick and my own custom made finger picks. I thought about it and have concluded it would be very hard pluck those top string hard enough match the volume against heavy twanging effect produced by the index and middle picks. Either way, John's use of the tremolo bar in combination multiple finger pick combination was unique. Sometimes I almost think he's using a bottle slide but when I watch the video, I see he's got two fingers gripping the tremolo bar creating that effect. I think we can all agree on this, He was inovative, he assembled an Amp and speaker combination I personally have never seen done that way. He tinkered with his guitar, his pickups n switches, made cool looking custom pickguards for them, played great guitar and created his own sound, style and methods of playing. Take care SIr Dwire.

There are a few guitarists whose music became an appendage to my musical spirit from the first few notes to this moment now. John Cipollina, Rory Gallagher, Peter Green, there is just something about the tone and dexterity, the pulling notes out of the spirals of dust around a stage light, they just do it and from the quiver to the wax their music is perfection, even when they were too high to play they still were better than Hal the guitar slingers out there. Today is nearing morning and my ritual of John Cipollina performances is just winding up, gonna be sleeping late tomorrow and sleeping with a grin, my telecaster beside me, my angry Telecaster when I travel on with Gibson batwing steals notes form asteroids magic guitar, Gretsch is a secret she is not aware of quite yet, but the Fender knows, they always know.
That tremolo growl high in a range near dogs only takes a bit like Cobra and cements it into San Francisco guitar outlaw heaven, it is the best.

Edit:2024 I miss John so much, I spent my teenage years seeing John and Who Do You Love/Mona was always a highlight of each concert. Last time I saw/heard that was seeing Ratdog in 2002 at the now defunct Bumbershoot at Seattle Center, our sons grew up going to concerts all the time as kids and teens, they danced their butts off at Bumbershoot every year…those were the days, these are still the days!!!

The first few minutes on Happy Trails constitutes an electric guitar lead like no other in San Francisco-before or since. Garcia, Kaukonen, Bloomfield, Gurley, the Millers (Steve and Jerry), Wilhelm, and the other masters who were only in their early twenties like John, provided us with a movie that almost seems like a rebirth of the Golden Age of Greece-which many people thought, in fact, was the case. It's called collective karma and refers a to a geographical area populated by beings from another time and space being ecstatic once again.

I am old (72) and have listened to Happy Trails since 1970 when I was able to purchase the vinyl and then the 8 track. My favorite album of all time to this day. I still try to figure out who is playing each part of the songs on that album. Gary Duncan or John C. John is fairly easy in Mona, but on Who Do You Love, I think a lot of that is Gary Duncan. Oh to be able to see them do Happy Trails at the Fillmore that day.

@@Happy-Trails-To-You Gary Duncan plays the lead after the opening lead by Cippolina and the opening vocal. He plays most of that version of Who Do you Love from the Happy Trails album, released in the beginning of 1969. The distorted leads on side one are, naturally, John Cippolina. As a "rule of thumb" Duncan and Cippolina can be distinguished by a distortion lead and a straight normal feed. I was lucky enough to be attending San Francisco State at the time and totally obsessed with the SF bands from the fall of1966 on. Since the scene wasn't huge I had friends in the biz, light show folks, sound folks and so forth. I just turned 73 and still consider my college days as among the most adventuresome of my life. At the time it was apparent to me and most participants in the acid age that we were experiencing extraordinaries events. I became a human being by those experiences. Happy trails friend.

@@donaldgehre5964 It would be so cool to sit down with you and listen to that album. I must have listen to Happy Trails 1000+ times and every time I hear something a little different. So I just listened again using the helpful info you just gave me. Who Do You Love (Side 1 of the LP) has 6 parts. Part 1 and Part 6 vocals are JC, along with much of the lead guitar ? Part 4 lead guitar is JC? The videos of QMS are 1975 with Dino in the band and it is not the same as when they played Happy Trails in 1969 so I have trouble visualizing it. Well I guess it is me overthinking it but the combination of the two of them on this album, and the sound that it produced, in my opinion, is unmatched by any band, anytime, ever. 99.99% of the people I know never even heard of Happy Trails. I feel like I live on the wrong planet. Thank you for taking the time to respond. BTW. I grew up in Long Island, but started listening to H.T in college in Florida in 1970. Never stopped. Have my original vinyl album, wore out the 8 track, and have about 4 copies of it on CD.

Duncan, 1 of a kind, forsure. Not one to blow generic cliches, but as in case of many brighter individuals, often misunderstood. He always said exactly what he was thinking; sometimes, not too complimentary, but sincere. When Cipollina passed, a lot of dumb debates ongoing as to "who" was better, or more valuable. He'd just say "John was my buddy," that's all. Still say, and I do dig that LP, when he split, never really satisfied, ever, the rest of em' had little direction, beyond Gravenites, when they (contractually obligated) recorded Shady Grove. 1st time hearing it, real noticable "gap" there, inspite Nicky Hopkins contribution. Duncan was the driver, although he gave it all to Dino Valente when he did come back. He never was that hip on being any leader, anyhow, even in QMS heyday.

1st time hearing. Not Cipollina, but rhe 1st time I have heard the post-QMS Cip. Thankfully, to my ears, he got back to the present at 5:45. His playing reminds me of what a top player of what is known now as, "Psychedelic Rock" sounds like. And that, to me as a musician means a lot. This is a good 'backing' band. It would be good to hear them step out from time to time, but seamlessly. That's what 20-20 hindsight looks like. Sorry, but someone has to do it. Meanwhile, there were a lot of stars in QuickSilver- Gary Duncan, Freiberg, Evermore,& Cipollina. I hear both their presence and their absence.

I always knew that Cippolina's playing style immensely influenced mine and how I mix so many genres. But I had never seen his playing close up and didn’t realize how much i gravitated to his right hand picking techniques so much so that it really surprises me. This all goes back to when i left texas at 16 on my journey to be a jazz/rock star and my mom and step dad used my money to leverage buying a Mid-century modern house in the Mill Valley hills where Cippolina and his brother grew up. By chance, his parents, who were realtors, were nearly the first residents I met there.
