John Cipollina had his own sound and his own style. He was underrated and should have had a greater career. The dude who got me into SGs and also the dude who made me take the Bigsby off said SG for reasons demonstrated here. He gets away with tuning problems in style though...As a teenager I listened to that first quicksilver album just to hear his beautiful guitar runs, arpeggios, 6th intervals and triads all put together so musically. R.I.P
I think every guitarist worth his nickel strings listened to QMS just to fly with Cipollina....He was a giant and pissed all over many of the most celebrated guitarists from a great high....
I had one of those early 70's SG's with the slender neck merged into the body. You didn't even need the Bigsby to do a half-tone bend, just pull back the neck with your left hand.
There's something different in the water in the bay, exspecially the gifted musicians in S.F. CA, ao many incredible guitarist, thank you universe ☮️🎵🎶

Killer! This is like spaghetti western meeting bluegrass. Someone educate me! Please. John and Mick Box of Uriah Heep are two of the reasons I play Gibson SG's. I wonder if he was into Freddie King? Because of the thumb and nail pick.
He was into Flamenco, big time. That is where he copped the technique with the thumb. But he came from a bluegrass\country background and that is where the thumbpick came from....
Cipollina banged that SG so hard it would NEVER stay in tune for him through a lengthy tune. He used to use that Bigby bar to drag it back into tune. I've never seen anybody else do that the way he did. Of course, I've never seen anybody else do ANYTHING around a guitar the way John did.
John fue unos de los héroes inmortales. Grande cipollina

Although I am not enamored with this performance, John remains one of my all time favorite guitarists. RIP
I miss this man...

JOHN CIPOLLINA & NICK GRAVENITES BAND - Live At Rockpalast: Dortmund (1 January, 1980).
So freakin’ badass, man
One of them melodies can also be found in hey bullfrog by beetles
I was there of course, also Bonn Rheinterrace few times also with Terry and the Pirates
Such a beautiful song
Nothing's beautiful on an out of tune guitar.
Even if you're stoned, drunk, or both, like he obviously was.
John had guitar issues obviously you didn’t know John did not drink alcohol,
@@mymeester Oh, so it was just the drugs.
@@fastinbulvis2223 not! He wore that guitar out!

Uniquely, ever so slightly out of tune, atmospheric, elemental, current bending aural lightning. Not forgotten.

@@MrGiorgioud Man, thanks for educating me. Appreciate it.
BOX is Tremendous. Ken Hensley was also such an Underrated songwriter and Musician.
That thumbnail though
5:40 It's a thumb pick
what tuning is this in????
zero?
some variant of open-G, I think ... his low A-string is ringing G when unfretted, and you can hear his open G-string ringing G too
@@dimbulb5549 yeah John used open and hybrid tunings
Who did his pickguards?
:D
the guitar out of tune happens to legends and common men

damn you guitar guys always pointing out when it’s out of tune!
Me and my tin ear always just think it’s supposed to be that way. LMAO.
