I'm currently living in Hong Kong, been there for almost three years, and I am fortunate to have become very good friends with many great Hong Kong people, I've also had the opportunity to go the mainland a bunch of times. I don't want to dive into the politics/controversies of this topic, but all I want to say is that Hong Kong people have developed their own culture and identity which is quite distinct from the mainland (I guess mostly due to the outside influence during the British colonial era), and they are concerned that their identity and culture which is so important to them will gradually be erased in the coming years, basically they feel like Hong Kong might lose its "soul" in the future. By the way, I don't think that they deny that they are Chinese (many of them has family in the mainland actually), but they don't want their cultural identity and specificities (for instance, their language) to disappear over the years.
Anyway, those are just my two cents as a foreigner living in Hong Kong. You raise many good points and it's interesting to clearly hear about this issue from a mainland Chinese perspective. Also, this is great learning material as always, so thank you.

Hong Kong did have a unique position - a blend of good market access to China and being a city where businesses were able to trust the rule of law over whim of a leader. The obsession and eventual success of bring it into fold of CCP is akin to killing the goose that laid the golden egg - all to the benefit of Singapore.
Hong Kong's strength has always been vibrancy, not the orderliness. Yes, it has some some delipidated neighbourhood because the city administrator did not have to power to bulldoze them away. But, to some, this added to the charm of the city. I remember with sadness the early days of 改革开放 when everyone (mainland Chinese, Hongkongers and Taiwanese alike) thrived and looked towards the future with hope and friendship. Over the last 10 years, this has all changed.

The CCP did not kill the goose that lay eggs in Hong Kong. It was the capitalists in Hong Kong who used the media to propagandize their hatred of China to divert social conflicts in Hong Kong.

    说香港人不是特别认同自己是中国人是太简单的想法。
    我认识每个香港人都认同他们中华民族的但有的香港人不认同共产党统治。
    是政治立场的问题而不是包不包括中国的问题。

Firstly HK's GDP per Capita is four times the one of China. Secondly the gap between rich and poor is both in HK and China much higher than in the most countries of the "capitalist west". Hongkongs unequality is just slightly higher than Chinas. If we would just compare Hongkong to Shanghai (with all its rich people but also all the poor service workers, etc) the inequality might be around the same. And in addition to that Hongkongers have / had some sort of freedom in contrast to mainland China. What is the problem with them not wanting to be part of China?
Why does a country like China which has 1.5 billion people want to have Hongkong and taiwan with a combined population of around Shanghai back so badly?...

It's because China, like all nations, needs a narrative to keep its country united. That narrative was once communism (shared values: we're all going to look after each other), and after that, it was exponential growth (shared values: we're all going to get rich together). Now that that narrative is failing, it's a classic pivot to nationalism : "shared values: we're all going to protect our shared Chinese heritage"
That new narrative is not compatible with places like Taiwan and Hong Kong (and Xinjiang, while they're at it), so they will seek to "assimilate" them, by force if necessary.

To understand it, we have to define some terms: China, PRC and ROC. China is present day mainland, Taiwan, etc. PRC is the government controlling mainland. ROC is the government controlling Taiwan. The utmost priority on Taiwan is that it is part of China and it is. It does not need to be under the PRC. As for Hong Kong, well HK could have returned to ROC(Taiwan) in 97. Unfortunately, ROC never made much headway. The next question, why can't there be 2 Chinas, one under the PRC and one ROC? I think for that you need to ask ROC former president Chiang Kai Shek. When he retreated to Taiwan, he called on the world not to recognize the PRC and there is only 1 China. He probably thought once the USA had taken North Korea that he would launch a simultaneous attack from the south from Taiwan and the Americans from the North and he would be returning to Beijing. That did not happen and now both sides just following his prescribed medicine. There is only 1 China.

@@btlim4316 yeah sure that's all true. But still I find it weird that China is so obsessed with Hongkong and Taiwan. I mean it's far more than 100 years ago that Mainland ruled over Taiwan. If we would want to restore the boundaries and historical borders of Europe from that time we would start WW3
      probably...
But I gues in fact the problem is that the PRC can't accept a democratic country so close to it's borders. Also China has problem with nearly of it's neighbors so with Taiwan it's just a little worse...

@@jac_wie1132 Taiwan is already part of China. No wars need to be fought over this. In one interpretation, the capital of China is in Taipei. Its president is Tsai Ingwen. The country is called Republic of China.
