A History of Yakuza's Collaborations, Crossovers, and References

- [UPDATE]
Here is an update to the video. There were some that I missed when covering the topic of this video.
Persona 5:
In persona 5 there is a reference to Yakuza Like A Dragon where Makoto will say "So Dragon Like A Yakuza is finally out" as well as the game having characters that can wear outfits of Yakuza characters. Yakuza Like A Dragon did the same where music from Persona can be listened to in Survive bar such as "Life Will Change"
Thanks to the people for letting me know and tell me if there are any more I missed.
This is my first video with this type of style and format, so please don't hat me if it's bad. I have been wanting to cover a topic like this for a while now. I have always found interest in games that are crossovers, have collaborations, or contain a reference to another title. I especially find interest in it, if it is a franchise or series that I am fond of. So today I wanted to look at the many different crossovers, collaborations and references the series has been involved either with them featuring a game or them being featured in another form of media.
I also want to thank every single one of you for the support the channel has been given, we are now at 632 subscribers, something I never expected to hit so soon. I genuinely appreciate every one of you! I hope you look forward to more videos like this, I'd love to do more as well, and if you have anything you want me to cover let me know. Take Care.

I think if Kiryu or any Yakuza character were to appear in a fighting game, it should probably be Virtua Fighter. It would do wonders for getting VF back out into the public consciousness.
They really don't want to have any of their main protagonists in fighting games, because it would involve fighting women and they don't want those characters to fight women.
@@oneblacksun of course not. I’d rather Kiryu not be any fighting game either for the same reason, but if he was gonna be in one despite that, it should still be Virtua fighter
@@yvngdende Tekken would be fire with all his blue dragon particles and aura.
Tekken definitely
that's not even him, its a cosplay @libtarddestroyer7568
Shin Megami Tensei IV has an obscure yakuza reference. In the game if you go to Kabukicho (the place Kamurocho is based off) just past the iconic gate you can actually find Club Stardust at almost the same spot as it's in the yakuza games.
There are also rumors that on a particularly foggy morning you may see the silhouette of a clown in an afro standing under the sign. Such rumors are crazy, though...
In personal 5 scramble/strikers if you goto the movie theater there’s a yakuza 7 reference there
In no More Heros 3, Miike is featured, Who did the yakuza movie, both Travis and Bishop mention it. Yakuza is also canonically a movie in the persona universe, meaning in both persona and no more heros, yakuza is a movie.
I like to imagine the movie lasts as equally as long as the godfather
@@groupoftrouts7748I like to imagine it's the Ryu Ga Gotoku movie that was made around the time Yakuza 1 came out because it's amazing
@@MudkrabLord in no more heros, it's obvious travis is referring to that movie. But with persona 5 strikers, it's not clear
Fun fact: in the japanese version of rainbow six siege kuroda (kiryu va) voice acts operator warden
Now this entirely off memory but I believe Makoto in Persona 5 Royal mentioned how she was excited for a new movie titled “Like a Dragon: Yakuza” but maybe I’m misremembering
It was in strikers, but yeah she does mention it
It was in Strikers, and they reversed it a bit, saying "Dragon, like a Yakuza."
@@freemanthedelphox6249 For sure was in Strikers but also in P5/P5R. 7/30 is the day she asks you to the movies if anyone is curious.
It also mentioned it in Persona Q2 in the fourth dungeon
Yes there is!
Its called "Like a Dragon" makoto invites you for it and she loves the movie
You're killing it with these videos, Isaac! Keep it up!
Really appreciate it, you as well! 👍
Oh shit its that guy

In Yakuza 5 in one of the restaurants, you could hear the intro to Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg like the other older Sega games OST. It was bizarre, but also nice to think that someone in RGG Studio appreciated the game even though it didn't do well in recognition and sales.
Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing made me despise Billy Hatcher
@@Edward3Nigma The game would of made you want to break the egg that is his head then. Or that might of been just me.
All the convenience stores in Yakuza 5 plays sonic rush adventures main theme when you stand near the entrance.
@@Edward3Nigma SEGA Should seriously put Kiryu & Majima in a SEGA All Stars games like a racing game or even a SEGA crossover fighting game similar to SSB because if SEGA did this it could spark people interest in trying out the series.
Project X Zone 2 was truly special crossover. Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Yakuza, Tales, Dot Hack, Pheonix Wright, and Soul Calibur in one game. What's interesting is they used Fiora in the game, and Shulk. Wierd choice, but I'm glad for that because I love Fiora and I got Shulk in Smash anyway.
Devil May Cry too
I have a funny story on how got into the Yakuza series.
In 2015 I bought a game on the 3DS called Project X Zone 2 which was a mediocre JRPG crossover that merge the worlds of Capcom, Namco and SEGA Characters in one chapter Phoenix Wright and Maya meet Goro Majima for a court case for the Tojo Clan it's a really fun chapter and definitely the highlight for an otherwise mediocre crossover game.
But when I look up the game Kiryu and Majima were from it said Yakuza Dead Souls and Yakuza Fans have said that its one of the weaker games in the Yakuza series so naturally at first, I didn't care to get into the Yakuza series at the time.
But in 2018 I was scrolling through CZcams, and I found a video called Sonic and SEGA All Stars Warzone which was a fan idea for a possible SEGA Smash Bros it's actually a really well put together concept video and I linked in the comment below but anyways the video going through the roster of playable characters on the roster but one character I didn't recognize at the time was Kiryu and he was a series called Yakuza but then he started showing screenshots of gameplay and in one screenshot was Kiryu and then it hit me that this was same character from Project X Zone 2 and then I learned that Yakuza: Dead Souls was a Spin Off to Yakuza and not a main line game.
So, then I look up the Yakuza Series and I learned that it was a big series in the Japan for SEGA but in the west, it wasn't quite a big as it was in Japan until the release of Yakuza 0 in 2017 on the PS4.
the first Yakuza game I played was Yakuza 6: The Song of Life since it was newest one out at the time and I was hooked instantly, and I have played mostly every Yakuza game (Except spinoffs like Dead Souls, Kenzan and Ishin) its not only one of my favorite SEGA franchises but also one my favorite video game series of all time.
Link to Jarbloko"s concept for a SEGA Smash Bros:
czcams.com/video/hHH1_oj6KMo/video.html
Don’t forget Shenmue as well.
@@sideburngthepeacebringer27 True Yakuza would not exist without Shenmue, so much of Yakuza's DNA comes from Shenmue but that doesn't mean there not the same series.
Speaking of crossovers am I not the only one who wants SEGA to make their own Crossover Fighter like SSB or a Sonic & All Stars Racing 3 (not counting Team Sonic Racing) because SEGA has so many characters for potential crossover game like SSB.
@@maxtubb8560they have Joker from Persona he’s in smash
Good video! One that you missed was in the game "Later Alligator". In it, there's a character called "The Knife" whose name, design, and personality is a reference to Majima. Hell I'm pretty sure at one point he gives his backstory, in which it's just a recap of Majima's arc through 0 to kiwami.
I actually got the A Hat in Time easter egg on complete accident. I thought it was some pop culture-internet humor thingy, since I didn't know even know what Yakuza was back then lmao
My favorite part when it comes to the DQ references in 7 is the part-time hero battle requests, as whenever you wrap one of those up, Ichiban states, "With finesse!" Where as in Dragon Quest, finishing a side quest states that it was "Transgressed with finesse!"
30:00
That whole side case is more than a minor reference. The entire side case is structured like an Ace Attorney case. From the way the attorneys are positioned and standing, the "meltdowns" the characters have, the way the camera is positioned, the use of music stings, and yes, the quotes such as "Objection!" All of Judgment could be conpared to Ace Attorney due to its themes and subsystems, but that one cake side case acknowledged that RGG was wearing their inspiration on their sleeve.
Dragon Quest is also referenced in the song Backscratcher of Coins with it being a remix of the DQV battle theme. And Pokemon is referenced again with the character Ass Catchem from Judgement and Lost Judgement where he also says: “You’ll feel the power that’s inside”
I'm surprised you didn't bring up that Kiryu and Majima's voice actors were the two main charactes in one Pop Team Epic episode. Great video though!
i cant believe they made a full on franchise about that one song in taiko no tatsujim, i hope they are doing well :)
8:34 I think this is original soundtrack from first game of Yakuza series, Ryu Ga Gotoku(PS2 game, known as Yakuza).
Fantastic video! Also idk if this counts, but an advertisement for Yakuza 3 appears briefly in one of the live action Fairy Odd Parents movies.
In Yakuza 5, I heard phantasy star portable 2's opening music in one of the convenience stores
When it comes to similar martial art moves in different games, unless it's something iconic like the one-inch punch it's arguable that it's just the universal thought process of the fighting style being used and not actually a reference to each other.
Also, probably the most surprising reference in the Yakuza series is LaD7 having the Rhythm Thief soundtrack available to buy. A really niche 3DS rhythm game that I've been a fan of ever since it came out and have been feeling forgotten from Sega as the game ends in a cliffhanger and we've been waiting for a sequel since 2012 or so. Supposedly a shot of Rhythm Thief was also shown in the first Sonic movie
Persona 5 also has a few Yakuza references in it. There's the Yakuza costume set for Persona 5 Dancing as well as the fact Makoto is canonically a fan of the series as she wants to go see the movie based on it in Persona 5 Strikers.
Also, Dreams of an Absolution from Sonic 06 plays in some Yakuza stores (at least in Yakuza 5). And that song is probably the best thing to come from Sonic 06.
Love these style of videos, VERY well done!
great video but you miss the Persona 5 ones: Persona 5 Dancing In Starlight Yakuza costumes pack; Joker as Kiryu, Ann as Majima, Makoto as Saejima, Ryuji as Ryuji and Haru as Haruka (how clever those last ones :P) and in Like a Dragon you can buy in game P5 CD tracks to hear at Survive Bar. and the Pop Team Epic (each episode is first half female Voices second half is same animation but male voices) in S2 ep 11 where Kiryu and Majima VA did it, what lead to fun edits of those skits in "Yakuza skins".
That was a very entertaining video and I learned a lot of things I did not know about the crossovers and cameos in the series. Also I love how you used Sonic Mega Collection music at the end, that game is very nostalgic for me. Amazing Vid!
In Persona 5 Dancing in starlight you can dress up as the Yakuza Cast
this video was great, hooked until the last second and left me wanting more but even still, there were a lot of collabs and references I didn't know existed!
This video was great!
Great video man
Fun fat, the colliseum announcer from 0 was the actual announcer for the old PRIDE fighting championship in Japan, Lenne Hardt. She's been doing it for a while.
Man when my boy Yagami going to get some love with this collabs.
I can’t believe Dame Da ne Guy was in Ranbow Six Siege
Excellent video man!! Super well done and really interesting!
I did wish to add, there is a wonderful indie game called "Later Alligator" where your objective is to solve minigames and meet multiple alligator characters. And there is one specific one which is a DIRECT reference to Majima, which ends up turning into an Otome dating visual novel where you are trying to romance a Majima Alligator, complete with eye patch, haircut and outfit. He even directly mentions the "Dragon of Dojima" as well as referrings to himself as a "Mad Dog"!!
It was a super neat detail that I thought would be super neat for people to know about!
awesome sauce
Kiryu in Everybodys Golf only means that the Yakuza series has always been more attached to Playstation than to any other platform.
There's another phoenix wright reference in 0,so amon just pulls off a "that person is you!" And does the good ol finger point
Also jo amon's post fight cutscene "who was that jo guy?what a bizzare adventure"
I never bought a micro-transaction/cosmetic so fast as I did Majima’s elite skin in R6: Siege!
deserves more views tbh
you have a very nice voice to listen to while wearing a headset
Will never get over hearing and recognizing the title screen theme from Sonic Rush: Adventure in the convenience store in Yakuza Kiwami
Fun fact, Kiryu was the most requested guest character for tekken 7. He wasn't allowed in because the yakuza devs didn't want him to hit women. But now seeing that there's a kiryu skin in r6, maybe he'll be in 8.
Great video kyodai
You got a very relaxing voice. Please read me a yakuza bedtime story.
good stuff! really enjoyed this vid!
Phantasy Star Online 2 had an additional collab with Ryu Ga Gotoku: Ishin back in 2014 when it released in Japan, which featured Majima's clothes, bat and wakizashi from his appearance in Yakuza 1; Sakamoto Ryoma's clothes and hairstyle from Ishin, and many Music Disks from Yakuza 1 to 4 and Ishin.
Also in Judgment, although this is such a small detail, you can play Poker against a character called no-good Tora which seems to be a reference to persona 5 confidant Yoshida's nickname.
Gonna play project x zone 2 solely due to Kiryu and Majima being in there
We not talking about how Akiyama’s kick in 4:00 was almost perfectly synced to the music?
This is some deep knowledge right here
I like how he casually flaunts he may or may not have a shiny raichu
In case no one mentioned it yet, Phantasy Star Online 2's collab also has Majima in it & technically Kiryu if you count his incarnation from Isshin.
Some info for the Binary Domain one : While we don’t have Kiryu and can’t prove much, there’s images of Kiryu in the Ministry and Resistance teams, implying he might not be for the campaign, or may be available for both. You can also play as Majima, Akiyama and Ryuji for multiplayer, acting as alternate versions of the Striker, Scout and Heavy Gunner classes.
Ive played machine gun kiss in an actual arcade taiko no tatsujin, is the only song I want to play everytime I go xD
also in street fighter 5 urien has a costume and an alt color for it that is kiryu's grey suit and red shirt
Project X Zone 2 is so funny because it says Pheonix Wright was Majima's lawyer in court and the sole reason Phoenix and Maya were in Kamurocho is that Pheonix was coming to represent Heihachi in court and that just became canon in my heart, soul, and mind
theres a game called later alligator that has a majima alligator
who mentions showing up and fighting the same guy
while also building his rep as a mad dog
Never heard of project X zone 2 but I’m yakuza fan boy and just seeing that game has drove me crazy I gotta get it now.
4:00 had no reason to slap
Kiryu Also does an Ace Attorney Reference in Yakuza 3, it was a side story and even had a cutscene (3 had a lot of big cutscenes for substories.)
A Yakuza fighting game would be killer
if no-one has said it you missed one that id say is more of an easter egg but its whole quest in yakuza 6 and tre quest is about the movie from "The girl who leapt through time"
also the yakuza game "Streets of Kamurocho" is a reference to side scroller fighting games (if that made any logic.
And lastly "like a Dragon: Ishin!" also has a phoenix wright reference in a Substory 6 - The Mochi Mystery
and loads of other references in that one aswell!! ~ sorry if you did actually know about this i just wanted to include them :)
Well, if you know Shenmue too well, you understand that 4 was somehow a tribute to the series, same as Shinada's clothes in 5, and other stuff in others games...
MACHINE GUN KISS BEST YAKUZA SONG OF ALL TIMES IS SO FRRRRRRRRRR
missing persona 5 dancing whit yakuza outfits
unless i missed something, you missed the persona 5 dancing in starlight Yakuza costumes
Was Dead Souls really that popular of a game? It gets referenced a lot!
Sick sync at 4:00
This might be a bit far fetched or even just a coincidence but Jordi Chen from Watch Dogs has the same suit and shirt as Kiryu.
No official confirmation on it being an actual reference though.
I have to correct the Phantasy Star Online 2 section
Kiryu and Majima fashion, along side Yakuza Ishin stuff are in PSO2. They were added around 2014
The Yakuza 7 collab was in 2021
Saejima as oryx would have literally been perfect
Your overall sound in the video is a bit too quiet to the point that I needed to both play it 100% system volume and boosted. Still a very interesting video, gj!
Thanks for the feedback, I'll fix this for my next upload
the sync on 4:00 go kinda crazy tho.
10:00 THIS IS A CRIME FOR THE FUCKING MOVE FROM GETTING MID AIR KICKED SLAMMED TO GETTING KICKED INTO THE DRAGON STYLE, WHAT THE FUCK!
30:03 "no not that cake you nasty piece of shi-" 😂😂😅😅
So that’s what’s Kaoru been doing in the U.S.😂
Great video! Just remember to mute your mic in the parts where you aren't talking to not pick up any other audio!
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for the next video
Pretty sure Makoto's line in P5S is "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" a bit more blatant due to SEGA and Atlus' shared roof.
15:56 lore accurate
UM ACKCHYUALLY you forgot the Majima cameo/reference in Later Alligator so it's a bad video actually 🤓
If you can't tell, I'm joking; this was some good stuff
Bro speaking facts about games, while doing ASMR
Why your voice is soo smooth?
Everyone wanted Kiryu on Tekken 7, instead they put Negan.
One year later in Like a Dragon 7, Ichiban's Hero occupation has a red scarf, leather gloves and a barbed-wire bat.
At least Ichiban got caught up on The Walking Dead during his time in prison
I wish RGG weren't such weird sticklers for the whole "Kiryu doesn't hit women" thing because he's so highly requested as a guest character in fighting games. Personally I want him in Smash Bros ( his Final Smash could be his summon from Yakuza: Like A Dragon! ), possibly with Majima as either a 2nd Yakuza rep, an Assist Trophy or as the stage hazard for Kiryu's obvious Kamurocho stage ( Majima Everywhere as a hazard just works ya know? )
The single greatest Yakuza collaboration of all time? Kiryu and Nishiki breaking za law
Holy shit
I love how this video is presented and the chill vibes it gives off. I remember getting real excited when R6 had the Yakuza tie in... it may or may not have gotten my wallet, lmao.
I thought this was about in game product placement lol
Huh, I actually expected way more collabs and references for a 20 year old franchise...
But anyway, great video!
Man, I had no idea Pokemon MD has such close ties to Dragon Quest
all they'd have to do is say "it's the Kiryu from Dead Souls (not canon)" and boom. fighting game candidate.
Broo i missed mobile game "Sega Heroes"
I remembered when the game will closed, before closing the game, sega give 99999 money, diamond for upgrading the character.
Didn't like some jokes but loved the topic and how in depht you went with it, I had no clue they had to change the sprite for OutRun.
Keep it up
Did you sync akiyama heat action on purpose? Ill BE suprised if it wasnt
I did, just thought I might as well lol
Kiryu & Majima should seriously be in a SEGA All Stars games like a racing game or even a SEGA crossover fighting game similar to SSB I want to see a SEGA crossover game where I can see a Yakuza beat up Sonic characters.
Punch Club 2 as npc's with same name's and as foes.
bro i realized Miracle Johnson is actually Michael Jackson! what a reference bro/
Wasn’t there a Mafia City crossover or was it actually fake
Now all we need is a Fortnite collaboration to finish the series
Yeah, I agree, Saejima not appearing in Rainbow Six Siege is wasted potential.
Doesn't exactly fit this video, but another case of Yakuza existing in other things is in the arcade game Mai Mai where you can play a song from Yakuza 2
I want Kiryu and Hatsune Miku to shake hands
We are waiting for the fortnite collab
Where's Mafia City?
