    Wow, a reviewer who understands the D to A process and how quality of sound at the outputs can be affected, that's impressive today on CZcams. There are people who spend what the MontageM costs just for a DAC. And, the other obvious answer is the sound after the MontageM output depends on amplifier/speaker/mixer quality. Amazing how people who don't understand audio engineering are buying a MontageM. To get the full benefit from a flagship workstation, you need to be, or plan to be, educated in 1) audio engineering. 2) sound design. 3) effects design. 4) music theory. 5) a musician. 6) orchestration knowledge. 7) technically minded, not afraid of learning a proprietary user interface.

      I have some background in electronics and electronic design, as well as board-level repair on synths (you can see me do repairs and restorations on old synths on this channel).
      That said, if you truly want the perfect, pristine sound with no intermediate step depending on your mixer or audio interface, just use the USB digital stream out of the synth directly into your DAW, and skip the analog D/A -> A/D steps altogether.

      Yea, you would think we would have all USB mixers at this point, and an 8-synth studio could easily plug 8 USB connections into a MAC or PC platform. Just like MIDI mixers (hubs) were a long time ago. But USB presents compliance and resource problems and just a hub sometimes doesn't make it all function. So, the world continues to use analog mixers and the extra DAC/ADC step. We could all stop using digital synths and that would solve that problem :( But I own 17 digital instruments and 3 analogs. Can you imagine 17 USB connections to a computer. ha haha hoho. Where are our USB mixers! @@ScottsSynthStuff

      Orchestration knowledge is not necessary for any workstation or digital instrument (folks with that kind of studies are extremely rare among keyboardists and producers), but mixing knowledge instead is far more useful for making good use of a workstation keyboard.
      Effects design = sound design
      Audio engineering is unnecessary, but it is not unknown or uncommon for folks to quickly figure out that extra A/D and D/A and mixer stages all degrade sound quality a bit.

    Please like this so Scott may see it.
    Please do a tutorial for control and motion sequence.
    The new anx really makes the super knob come into its own, wether you use the knob or a pedal like I do, but to control the various parameters in such dynamic ways.
    But I struggle so much understanding what parameters do what , the names of the parameters are esoteric at best.
    Why can’t there be a filter 1 and filter 2 ?
    Is that cutoff and eg cutoff? I really want to get this down pat. I can figure out any other synths modulation matrix or system quickly but the motif and this montage have their own language it seems. This thing is powerful I need to post a video of the hypersaw performance I made , it’s fantastic and would be even better if I didn’t have the control assignments setup so clumsily !

    I had the old Montage 7 and I just loved the way the keybed felt. I traded up for the M8X to get that poly aftertouch. I totally agree that it seems backwards to have the that in a graded hammer keybed and not the synth/semi-weighted action of the 6 and 7.

    PAT, not a problem for the studio. Instead of spending $1000 more for an 88, buy a HydraSynth61 AND a Montage61 for just $300 more than one Montage88. Now you have a Montage AND a HydraSynth, a much better deal for a synth player. Piano's, digital pianos should be a dedicated instrument. For example, in my studio I did not buy a Roland Fantom 8 for $4000. Instead, I bought a Roland RD-2000 and a FantomO6 for $4000. Now I have synth action which I want for everything but piano and I have the top-of-the-line piano action with the Roland V-Piano....all in a two-tiered stand.

    Thanks for the great video, it cleared up a lot of doubts about the new Montage M... I really liked the new functions and the new side panel. It's a shame that Yamaha didn't include POLYAFT across the entire line... it doesn't make sense to me that it only has it on piano keys. The funny thing is that a long time ago, ENSONIQ only put the POLYAFT on the TS10 (which was a synth key) and not on the TS12 (which was a piano key)...

    • @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene
      @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene Před 6 měsíci +1

      The lack of PAT actually shows how serious Yamaha is about their instruments. The human interface to a keyboard combined with the physical connection of the keybed to the sound engine and the touch parameters along with the velocity is an extremely technical endeavor. To get this just right for all the sounds is a monumental task. I just bought the Yamaha DGX-670 piano, this keybed to sound engine connection is absolutely fantastic. The amount of expression I can control from this genius designed piano is as good as any 9 foot stage piano I have performed on. Controlled expression is the goal.

    I really like what they've done with the interface. It makes a lot more sense now and the buttons on the right are much easier to use. I totally agree with you, we'll probably see an M6x / M7x in the near future. It also seems that Yamaha is promoting M8x much more than the other models. If my classic Montage is sold, I will be definitely buying an M6, I have no real use for anything with a larger keybed.

    Great info Scott! Yes I hope Yamaha add MIDI 2.0 in a firmware update and add poly aftertouch to M6/M7! A video on how to setup multi voices, say a bass on 1, Piano on 2, Strings on 3, Synth pad on 4, drums on 5 etc up to the 16 MIDI parts then send those 16 parts into your DAW thru USB. This is a HUGE workflow improvement since Montage. Also how many arpeggios and patterns can it generate in real-time to get your creative parts going. Say. Bass pattern, Drum pattern, gtr rhythm to get a song going easily?

    • @jsmacks11

      Midi 2.0 is probably likely but I'm guessing if Pat is not included already then it is probably not possible.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 6 měsíci

      MIDI 2.0 is very likely coming, but poly aftertouch is based in hardware - if the keybed doesn't support it now, it never will. The keybed in the M6 and M7 has a single channel aftertouch sensor only, it doesn't have the ability to send polyphonic aftertouch.

    Electromagnetic induction key sensors
    Yamaha announced its new line-up of TransAcoustic and Silent Piano models in August 2022. As part of the announcement, Yamaha briefly described a newly developed “Articulation Sensor System.”
    We have newly developed an electronic “Articulation Sensor System”. Wireless communication from sensors installed under all 88 keys allows for natural playing without sacrificing the piano’s original touch. In addition, it is now possible to always accurately grasp the movement of keys being pressed and released, and to detect minute movements of the keyboard, such as when playing staccato, more accurately than before.
    Specifications for the SH3 and SC3 Silent Pianos identify the key sensing system as “Non-contact continuous detection electromagnetic induction sensor.”
    The new Yamaha Montage M8x employs the latest electromagnetic induction key sensing technology in its GEX keyboard.

First, do you know if the sequencing capabilities in the Montage M are based on - or more accurately at least the equal of what Yamaha added in Version 3.0 of the original Montage firmware? And second, do you know if Yamaha's Sample Robot companion software to the original Montage works with the Montage M?

    Hi Scott! Thanks SO much for your detailled videos and Q&A. I'm on the verge of ordering an M8x as replacement for my Kronos V1 73. I have one question about layers and splits: on the Kronos I'm able to set keyboard zones for each layer (or 'part', in Yamaha language). I know the Montage obviously can do this too. However, on the Kronos, I'm able to make the top and bottom end of the arranged keyboard zone (respectively) fade out and in. I've not seen this option on a montage. Do you know if this is possible? I use this quite often in my performances. Thanks so much!

    Yup. poly AT on the weighted keybed makes absolutely no sense, its leaving that feature wide open for another brand, the 128+128 polyphony is nothing new, korg did it with the triton studio and extreme, since its easier to just put in 2 chips than developing a chip thats twice as powerful, so there was going to be a lot of porting from the earlier series.

  • @valuemastery
    @valuemastery Před 6 měsíci +1

    Hi Scott, great video, thanks! A question about polyphony: Yamaha claims 128 notes of polyphony for preset AWM2 tones. However, each tone can be constructed out of elements (up to 128; on the previous Montage it was max. 8). Now, when a sound contains more than one element, do you still get 128-note polyphony? I would argue that the real limit, other than Yamaha claims, is 128 elements rather than 128 notes. So if a single tone is made up of 4 elements (and, to be 100% clear, I'm not talking about a performance made out of 4 parts, I'm talking single tones made out of multiple elements), you would end up with 32-note polyphony. Is that right?
    And if this is true, how many layered elements do preset tones typically use?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 6 měsíci

      You have it right - every element in a part uses up a voice of polyphony. Some factory performances use quite a few, some use only a few. You can't always tell by looking at the number of parts in use by the performance, however: you might have some that actuate only for certain parts of the keybed, or at certain velocity levels, etc.

  • @dionewillmann8723
    @dionewillmann8723 Před 6 měsíci

    Regarding polyphonic keys, it should be a sample of the technologies that will come in the next generations. It is not known the production cost that Yamaha spends or patents paid for the technology. However, the use of this technology in hammer keys is a differentiator for those who pay more for a product. It forces the user to have an m8x as the main keyboard in their setup and not as a secondary one. Encourage the musician who has Nord to retire it.

    The M8x is not graded if graded means the weight varies such as lighter keys at top and heavier at bottom. I'd propose that the newer higher tech GEX is far better and more versatile and doesn't use physical sensors plus is supposed to be upgradable vis software so it probably rivals the ASM.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 5 měsíci

      Graded hammer action replicates the feel of a traditional grand piano, with a heavier touch in the lower registers and a lighter touch in the higher registers. And that's exactly what is in the Montage M8X (as well as the previous Montage 8).

    For me, the Montage M kind of missed the mark compared to what I was hoping for. I'm really not sure why they couldn't include support for external SSDs to allow more room for samples, patch data, and recording time/ number of tracks at the OS level. Also, honestly, the new synth engines are kind of underwhelming. Yamaha seems more focused on samples more so than synthesized sounds and that's just not where I am at, I'm focused on synthetic/electronic sounds. With that said, I would love it if they released a model/desktop version that I can control with a MIDI keyboard with poly AT. Better yet, release the soft-synth version separately from the hardware version and give it 32 channels of output. I have a Mac Studio with the M2 Ultra and 64 gig of RAM that would easily be able to handle multiple instances of it. (My main gig is CG animation and video editing heavy with effects hence the Mac Studio.)

      Kaoss Replay is a DJ tool. Compare it to the DJS-1000.
      But the marketing team decided to use the synth/groovebox influencers to advertise it, which was an incredibly retarded move. It shouldn't be marketed to the audiences that it is not meant for.

    One question I have not that it matters, i hear that these are made in indonesia now where as the old one was made in japan, how is the quality of it ? I know roland is mostly Malaysian made now and I didnt feel it was quite as good as japans standards when I had one recently.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff

      I honestly don't perceive any difference between the two in terms of quality.

    Hello, 128 elements in one part. isn't that a bit much? okay I understand that you cannot play 128 elements simultaneously in a part because of the polyphony. For example, I would consider 28 elements to be a lot, and so you can play the underlying elements with plenty of playing aids, such as super button, mod wheel or aftertoch

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 Před 6 měsíci

      The 128 is overkill for any one synth patch, but fine for a piano patch with 128 velocity layers (no doubt the point).

    At 16:17 Yes, there is a fan, and yes you can hear it, barely, IF it's really quiet in the studio. I notice it when I first turn on my M8x, but once I start playing I can't hear it. It's very, very quiet.

    • @LezMarwick

      I have the M6 and I can clearly hear the fan on startup as well, but I've never noticed it when playing either.

    Well, because I'll put off upgrading from Montage 6 to the M7 because of lack of PAT, if they do finally release a poly-enabled keybed in the next iteration of the M7, perhaps I'll get to also enjoy upgrades to things like the inferior touch screen and any other shortcomings that are revealed in this first round of the M.

    Fantom EX or Montage M? 🧐🤔👀😶‍🌫️

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 6 měsíci +6

      I have both. They both do different things, but you can tell which I prefer by the fact that my Montage M is front and center, and my Fantom is down on my left below the Hydrasynth. I use them for different things, they both have their strengths. But if I could only have one...it would be the Montage.

      As a Montage (original Montage) owner (thinking about this new Montage) I had the same question. My stage rig is Montage with O2, Keyscape and B-3X using the amazing Montage audio interface. I opted not to buy the new Montage since my current setup is lots more powerful than this upgrade (only my opinion).

    • @furiobisotti8150
      @furiobisotti8150 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @CaliforniaCreedence I strongly believe that a virtual instruments setup is nowadays much more powerful than any workstation. More flexible, cheaper, lighter. But it needs computer know-how and different mindset when programming. If you look for a piano sound and feel satisfied with a workstation preset, then you don't need VST.
      Personally I cannot play live without Hmmond-Leslie and Rhodes simulations inside my computer.

    • @CaliforniaCreedence
      @CaliforniaCreedence Před 6 měsíci

      @@furiobisotti8150 I completely agree. I chose B-3X by IKmultimedia, because, having played a Hammond with a Leslie, I could never find a Leslie simulator that made me go, “Yes, that’s it!” GSI does a great job, as well. The Yamaha and all other HW synths except the Nord never come close with respect to the sound of a Leslie. I love the Rhodes in Keyscape, and I really love the Wurly 200A and 147. I can’t find a workstation present with which I am happy with these sounds. There are a lot of good piano sounds out there, but none like Keyscape (my opinion of course). I don’t think this Montage is worth the upgrade at this point. I love my Montage, and the Steinberg audio interface built in is excellent.

    You know, I really wanted to buy this keyboard.
    But I’m very disappointed that the 76 key & the 61 key does not have poly aftertough! What the hell! Are you freaking kidding me!
    And they want $4,000 for the 76 key version!
    Waaaay over priced for that keyboard!
    That is absolutely retarded!
    The Montage M7 as it is …should be selling no more than 3 grand at best!
    There is also other limitations on this keyboard as well that also disappointed me as well..but just do not feel like to mention them.
    Other wise love the Keybed and the controls and the sounds….no poly after touch and the price is a crime! Do yourself a favor and get the Roland Fantom Ex…it will destroy the Montage M! Screw the super knob!

    yamaha dont make real synths that people actually use. its for keyboardist music nerds really, but even then its like they are stuck in the 90's or something.
