Part of the tunnel complex is believed to go back to the mid-19th century at least, but the current structure dates from the early part of the Second World War, having been built to protect the beach, a likely invasion point.
Sections of the tunnel are unlined, particularly the first length up from the original entrance, while other sections have either a brick wall facing or irregularly spaced brick piers and vaulted corrugated steel roofs above. Nearer the cliff face erosion has taken its toll and most of the machine gun post’s original 0.6m thick reinforced concrete front wall and brick facing have now fallen away
The post was initially manned by the 70th Battalion The Buffs until November 1940 when the 5th Battalion Royal Marines Commandos took over from them. Their local headquarters was in the nearby village at Curfew House on Kingsdown Road (now the Royal British Legion local headquarters and a private house) and to keep themselves amused they made practice attacks on local regiments.

Back in my grade school days we had a physical fitness program called the presidential physical fitness achievement award. Several times a year we were measured on our physical fitness. In order to get the award we had to be able to perform a certain amount of pushups, sit-ups, pull-ups, 100 yard dash, softball throw, and rope climb. Not being able to pull oneself and a very small pack up a rope, that’d be embarrassing.

When I was a kid on the 1950s there was a partially bricked up entrance almost by the road I recall. It leads to that gun nest and a lot more. We were caught and council bricked it in more solidly.

Brilliant explore, didnt know these tunnels existed!! I am so interested in ww2, the old buildings, bunkers etc, find it all very fascinating, love history. You need to come to Scotland on a road trip, plenty of old, abandoned crofts and "big houses" as the locals will say. 😉😊

I believe this cave was re-purposed, as a military bunker. Not a very good bunker, when you think bunker, either. I think this cave was dug out, in pre historic times, and was occupied by soldiers during the war. It doesn't make any military sense, to use that much man power, to dig a relatively small hole in a cliff, by the beach. What exactly are you going to do in there, besides hide? It would be easy to destroy with large naval gun as well. I don't buy the official narrative at all. Thanks for exploring it though! It truly is amazing!!

Quite a bit of work. One opening to guard that a single rocket would end whomever would be there. Another question, why is that guy masked up? Is covid in that bunker or someone not showering often?

    Clearly unfinished.
Expect they started building it sometime 1940 and then before it was finished, the imminent risk of invasion went away and they simply quit before creating the rest of the fortification it was likely meant to be.
That's why there's the "alcoves" without bricks and metal, all or most of those were going to extend into rooms.
Probably intended to house a platoon indefinetly when finished.
