Seeing Fleet Foxes on KEXP feels like finally getting a date with my high school crush.
perfect description
Spot on.
And she's like 6 years older and shaved.
Tight
Yeah, but still... for me, they playing Helplessness blues songs at kexp would have been like Rachel McAdams breaking into my house...
How is this band real? How do they create this music, then recreate it live flawlessly?
There are plenty amazingly talented groups out there, but this is divine.
They hold a special place in my soul.
Tony it’s just pure honesty. That’s what’s missing in so much of today’s world
This album has always struck me as a "studio album" (in contrast to the first two and shore, without the band), so I am pretty blown away with how faithful this is to it.
@@alvarosalamanca6054 It either never changed or is always changing. Take The Beatles for instance, they made astounding records. But they couldn't and didn't play a taste from their discography on one night / one show.
The art of the recording has been a huge focus of music in general.
@@alvarosalamanca6054 Very true. Sidenote, glad you commented, I really needed this performance tonight haha
Another layer I was thinking about - Some groups write such complex shit, like say rush or these dudes or dillinger escape plan, whatever, that just playing correctly is the pursuit and struggle each night. Others get bored easily and take it upon themselves to make their set/songs different every night and not like the studio version.
Music is the best thing ever.
Same.
The world doesn't know it, but it needs a "Horse With No Name" Fleet Foxes cover.
fuck yea
yes
Bryan Smith Yeeea. You read my mind.
👌
Not really, the original is fine and Fleet Foxes have their own sound and songs.
I'm a simple man I see Fleet Foxes finally playing KEXP I press like
00:35 - I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar
06:55 - Third Of May / Ōdaigahara
14:35 - Fool's Errand
18:17 - Mearcstapa
Thank you!!!
23:40 - Cheryl Waters
Total babe
God, these interviews suck
I thought the question at 25:00 was really interesting. What didn't you like?
The "I was a child in the ivy then" section is probably the most incredible moment on the album before the final eruption and string melody. Such a perfectly crafted song.
agreed. it's such a classic fleet foxes moment
That's my favorite part of the whole new album!
That part of the song always gives me goose bumps. I'm glad to know people out there appreciate it as much as I do. :)
Fleet Foxes is the one artist that I feel the word “timeless” accurately describes. I can imagine their music playing centuries ago in a medieval kingdom while also fitting in a dystopian world like the Hunger Games or something.
They came back so hard.
Izy Joseph one of the best comebacks I've ever heard, honestly. This is my favorite album by them.
They never left 🌝
fucking props to Jake McLaughlin & Kevin Suggs who are always on point with their mixing of KEXP's live sessions.
I'm glad to see their names being said .. it's not "wow, props to the sound guy", people had to look for their names because their work is so much valuable
This version of Fool's Errand lives in my head RENT FREE and yet it never ceases to amaze me every time I hear it.
Love the grandiose nature if Fleet Foxes' music. Every song feels like an epic voyage through some beautiful landscape...
Wow, what a perfect description of the experience.
I love when Robin tries to explain that solid feeling or reassurance a musician gets when they know they found the idea, chord, beat, melody, etc that will drive the song home. Like when Robin said "I can feel a physical reaction to it" and "yes, this is something that should exist" is that exact feeling. This is something I have been working out how to explain to people since I started writing music and it is never easy for non-musicians to understand completely. I love when he gives the example of the two chords because it clearly resonated with him but often feels minuscule when you try to demonstrate it. I thought this coupled well with Thom Yorke's interview where he says something along the lines of, it becomes a real physical thing standing in front of you. It became a hobby of mine to compare some of my favorite artists trying to explain this enigma because it always brings out quasi-poetic/philosophical aspects of the way they think. I like to think it is a closer look into their own personal world or unconscious.
What Thom Yorke interview are you referring to?
Great project! So, Kyle... how do you describe it? :)
Fleet foxes and Radiohead hold this in common I feel like their music really engulfs my entire soul I feel it in my entire being. You either overlook it or really feel it. Fleet foxes aren’t my favorite band but they really are a special group, Robin Pecknold transcends other acts with his songwriting
Such a crisp recording session, every song sounds to its full potential. incredible
Saw nothing but Robin in the beginning. Couldn't hear him, so I put my volume to 100. Little did I know the band would blow my ears out on the first song lol.
Pro Tip: If you can hear robin speaking on "I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar" then your headphones too loud and you're in for a rude awakening lol. Speaking from experience.
I did the exact same thing. Cranked it way up, as he was so faint, then BLAMMO! The band comes in at such an unforeseen moment like a rogue wave at the beach...
I waited 6 years to see them live, and a couple of weeks ago this dream finally came true. I can't really describe the emotion, the atmosphere, the chills of the concert. I also met Robin and spoke a few words with him, he's really one of the nicest and most down-to-earth guys ever. Listening to Fleet Foxes is like a neverending journey of peaceness and happiness. Thank you.
Matteo Moroni how did you get to meet him?
Seeing them in 2 weeks for the first time. Crack Up rules.
I'm seeing them Oct 4th in Chicago. So excited!
I seen them many years ago at the pitchfork music festival in Chicago and it was truly magical!
Agreed!!!
I want to hear On Another Ocean live Robin. Damnit
lurkerr it's the first thing i looked for! but i can't complain!
heard it in Berlin. Was perfect !
Heard it in Paris a week ago, stun'ing
One of the best FF tunes ever and there isn't a single decent performance on youtube!
yessss, me too. damn.
Cheryl waited her whole life for this moment
Fleet Foxes music kinda defined and gave life to a lot of my fondest memories. I'm glad you guys are back as well.
Same! Lots of camping and adventures to their albums.
I feel similarly. I've been listening to FF since I was a child and I have so many lovely memories associated with this music. My dog recognizes how much I love this stuff and sings along with me to every song.
10:10 is an intense moment. So much raw emotion in this album. Robins Pet Sounds
Robin Pecknold might have the most beautiful voice in all of music.
Agree
Definitely not. Lotta great voices out there. Maybe top 100.
@@MarmaladeSally You must be fun... Obviously it was his opinion...DB.
no need to shoot down his only for you to express your own.
@@MarmaladeSally seriously. Douche.
Dead or Alive? 'Cause if that is the case... You're on glue!
31:15 I love that she is fan-girling and he just tells her no. haha.
Sometimes I just sit in the La Marzocco cafe with a good book and listen to the KEXP live music for hours. It's my favorite way to spend a calm and worry free Saturday.
Book recommendations?
There's such a wonderfully surprising feel to this new album. It starts with an almost drab sound (almost). Just very quiet and low, to the point of it almost sounding mundane or out of key. However, after listening to it quite a bit more, I found that it really resembles something beautiful about being human. There are some days when you may just get an almost empty, mundane, hopeless feeling of being set in a regular life...then all of a sudden something happens that sparks your attention and ignites something mysterious in you, reminding you that there is something beautiful about life that is always calling you. There's this infinite beauty that calls you from hopelessness and makes you want to find life and love. That's what this album makes me feel.
lol
perfect description! beautiful words
awesome, thank you
Wow, that's an amazingly well put insight.
Hopelessness, or helplessness?
I am crying right now KEXP, do you understand??
Alex Curlicue I almost had a heart attack seeing this in my sub box
Right??? Ugh, my favorite band ever
must be listening to The 3rd of May...
Then you're dramatic.
well it wasn't that bad tho
Listen Fleet foxes while hiking at Yosemite was sureal
That actually sounds awesome. Haven't been to Yosemite since I was five. Might need to do a revisit, this time with some good music to soundtrack the hiking; fleet foxes, ben howard, pink floyd, john martyn.
@@terrapin8474 Sounds good! You must do it!
From what I can gather, they've been around for some time. Having said that, they're new to me, and I LOVE this group.
Music with sincerity and heart. I can only thank you.
I am Brazilian, and here I am not sure if many people know fleet foxes but I feel that I was lucky to have such a special ear to enjoy stilos like these, I like a lot
KEXP provide such an amazing global platform for new artists and also a place for established acts to stretch out in a studio enviroment. Cheryl is the perfect host. Her passion teases out a lot of truth from sometimes reticent artists. And Kevin Suggs has to be the best sound engineer in north american. Incredible!
thanks kepx, from brasil!
me too
fleet foxes come to brazil
the first thing that comes to my mind wen i ear FFOXES, ITS CHRISTMAS :)
Bands like fleet foxes just restore my hope in musicality, talent and something totally worth to buy and listen. This is a piece of music, art not just ableton patterns and autotune. Thank you for reminding our ears what music always should sound like
KEXP , thanks for exploring! Fleet Foxes, whirling! The expert sound engineering = spot on! You always represent and respect your performing artists! Who knew, 2017 was so long ago...
Loved the music, but as someone who has been a fan since Fleet Foxes began but knows very little about the band itself, I think I loved Cheryl's interview with them even more! Well done!
Gracias KEXP Feliz 2023 !!
From Dhaka, Bangladesh here! Really cool to see Morgan Henderson in the set, he is also awesome in The Cave Singers.
Aw Cheryl is so excited
That flute during "Third of May/ Ōdaigahara"...
HECK YEAH, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? IM LOVING THE NEW ALBUM THANK YOU ROBIN, SKYE, AND COMPANY.
Really surprised these guys have NEVER been on kexp live until now. Like, aren't they FROM Seattle? Regardless, fucking great way to start off the weekend. Happy Fleet Foxes Friday y'all.
WETs3rgullioni keep in mind fleet foxes were on a 4 year haitius during the time KEXP's CZcams series got popular
Their first at KEXP? Its is surprising. My favorite of them Live is from La Blogotheque.
it was a great start for my last weekend, too. i was spending some days without my wife & kids, in the quietness of country-life. perfect music for the wide fields, full green trees, the animals. the music seems to live in the landscape. i had experienced those moments with music from the old Genesis, Anthony Phillips, Renaissance & U2 (their music in 1984/85).
They don't like to be in the limelight.
happy fleet foxes friday! 01-06-2018
This mix is heaven to my ears.
I spent a majority of my twenties listening to them and when they broke up I was heartbroken so happy that they put out a new album and came back together that hiatus was way too long
I'm so glad they're back. One of the best bands to have ever graced us.
it’s amazing how good of a singer robin is now
I like the Fleet Foxes and I saw this video of them on my sidebar, and so I thought I'd have a look. It turned out as expected, I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent watching the performance. I'm glad to have shared this with you all. God bless.
Honestly, if they needed to take another 6 year hiatus to make another album as good as this, it would be worth it
So good, this is the best music being created right now. God, those bass runs...backing vocals...amazing melodies, lyrics, textured piano, hypnotic guitar, changes in tempo, dynamics...absolutely brilliant.
Please, get back together. I need you guys so I can relax and float above all this craziness...
They're over halfway through their next record, follow Robin's Instagram if you don't already!
Andreas Linguististine II I’m glad you were wrong! Ahah
Wow! I love how everyone in the band is so damn talented and don't just play one instrument. Definitely one of my favorite videos right now
Water for my soul.
I can't describe this feeling of joy, having my favorite band back and more elegant than ever before. 🙏🏻 Literally eternally grateful to them for the music they make.
Fleet Foxes scrupulously bringing every element into their live performances, it’s truly amazed me on how they didn’t leave out any details of instruments and sounds from their studio version..
Just saw them in St. Paul, MN at the Palace Theatre. Easily top 5 best show I've ever seen.
I was waiting for Fleet Foxes on KEXP like Christmas.
Just heard about these folks and I am really digging their sound. Good stuff!
They will always be my favorite band from my 2010 band treasure troves. I hope they can collaborate with Kings of Convenience, another great baroque folk act.
Crack up, the best album of 2017.
I still can't believe Fleet foxes came out with a new album.. I thought i'd never again have the pleasure of listening to a brand new fleet foxes song since 2011..
can't wait to see the new songs of the shore album on a KEXP live version
i am going to see them at Red Rock Amphitheater in two days!!!! I can't believe its finally happening, after so many years of wanting to see them its going to be epic in the most legendary venues around. my excitement is beyond explanation.
great music
I love the Fleet Foxes. They speak to me. After crossing an endless, parched desert with them, I was drawn to water: "Crack Up." So dissonant; so harmonious. But to see and hear them now in studio...up close...every bead of sweat and facial movement there for inspection...is truly awesome. Great job, Cheryl and KEXP.
Before I found this video, I watched an interview by CBC with Robin Pecknold and Skye. Robin had hit a very important point. He realized the fans weren't there for him personally but, for the music. Not many musicians realize this , and if they have they're already in deep depression or dead. The Fleet Foxes have beautiful, God given talent with good-hearted lyrics. Robins voice is flawless and so clear. I got to see them in Dallas last week, it was wonderful. Wish I could to meet them.
I adore robs look of confirmation when each song ends 🖤
how does it sound almost exactly like the album? fleet foxes youre way too magical
David Chacha pfft no it doesn't. I must be the only person that's gonna say it but, this sounds weak as shit compared to the album
UltaSukk I agree it's weak compared to the album, but still really amazing and powerful for a live performance nonetheless
I think its stronger lol
@@drfuck how could you call this a weak live performance?? Considering how complex their arrangements are and them pulling it off THIS well...c'mon
The amount of passion these guys play with get me pumped and emotional like very few acts do. I really hope I can see them live some day.
Twenty one minutes in and it dawned on me that this is a very new sound the fleetfoxes are dabbling in not like the older material I love just about everything they do but they are branching out into almost psychedelic jamming I absolutely love this sound
Am I the only one dreaming to play in this band?
there is a wildness in his eyes here, and so much intensity to his expressions. it’s incredible to watch, but i’m glad that in a newer performance like the NPR tiny desk he did solo you can see how gentle he really is now
Everything about this is magical. I too am blown away they never had been on kexp before.
such colorful music! i don't why but those chord-changes remind me of the old Genesis. these vocal harmonies! so warm, real, exciting, never boring. what a band!!
I feel that this album was more of a soundtrack, love the structure of their songs on this album, they are growing, you can tell
Sooo Amazingly Grand !!!! They Never Cease to Blow Me Away On There Musical Journey Through These Years !!!!
Oh yes, finally! Cheryl is the absolute best. This performance is flawless!!!
Cheryl Waters + Fleet Foxes holy shit
This is the best indie performance I have ever seen. Sorry, that's my opinion. Agree? Disagree?
this is stunning.
Thank you for this moment of sharing, your unique music with a musicality of great sensitivity with quality Musicians. Continue to tell us about your world!
These guys are so so good
Keltic spaghetti western epic as always thanks from Scotland ☮️🙏
This song (and all FF songs for that matter) are priceless works of art. I literally have tears in my eyes listening to this. It stirs my soul!
Such a long wait for this album and they have totally still got it... awesome
Dude plays EVERYTHING...so cool...I love these guys
Marvelous
Well Fleet Foxes finally on KEXP , when will Sufjan Stevens be here? I mean , I think he's the only one who hasn't been here
THIS IS FANTASTIC. I oddly enjoyed the interview in the mix. For a band that I've listened to for years and years, this truly was a treat. Thank you, KEXP.
J'adore vivement le concert à Paris et merci à AF pour cette découverte depuis 4 ans une évasion au paradis grâce à eux ❤️
Am I the only one who wants to read Robin's college application essay?
Turtle Vision Films What's the topic?
I think maybe his thesis would be a good read. What was his specific major?
Film
"Bitch im in fleet foxes, let me in"
@@rahuljoban "bitch I am Fleet Foxes" lol
i love this band
Absolute magic. Our harmonies are back!
And of course its Cheryl introducing my favorite band!!!!
So glad you guys are making music again. One of my favorite bands ever!
Wow this was filmed the day after I saw them in Spokane. Unforgettable performance. And the usual incredible sound quality from KEXP really replicates the sound of that performance.
Saw this band tonight, had tears in my eyes. Thanks FF
Third of May
Light ended the night, but the song remained
And I was hiding by the stair, half here, half there, past the lashing rain
And as the sky would petal white
Old innocent lies came to mind
As we stood, congregated, at the firing line
Night ended the fight, but the song remained
And so I headed to the wall, turned tail to call to the new domain
As if in the sight of sea, you're suddenly free, but it's all the same...
Oh, but I can hear you, loud in the center
Aren't we made to be crowded together, like leaves?
Was I too slow?
Did you change overnight?
Second son, on the other line...
Now, back in our town as a castaway
I'm reminded of the time it all fell in line, on the third of May
As if it were designed, painted in sand to be washed away
Oh, but I can hear you, loud in the center
Aren't we made to be crowded together, like leaves?
Was I too slow?
Did I change overnight?
Second son, for the second time...
Can I be light and free?
If I lead you through the fury will you call to me?
And is all that I might owe you carved on ivory?
But all will fade. All I say. All I needed
As a flash in the eye, I wouldn't deny, all receded
Life unfolds in pools of gold
I am only owed this shape if I make a line to hold
To be held within one's self is deathlike, oh I know
But all will be, for mine and me, as we make it
And the size of the fray, can't take it away, they won't make it
I was a fool
Crime after crime to confess to
But I hold the fleet angel, she'll bless you
Hold fast to the wing. Hold fast to the wing
They are amazing
Yesss, finally Fleet Foxes on KEXP, I was waiting for this to happen C:
Amazing live, I'm really enjoying it! Thank you!
i wonder how the world would be like if this were as popular as it is artistic
Cristian Guerra they do pretty well in terms of popularity, this record actually got to 9th on the Billboard charts which is like, great and well deserved. But yeah, I also get what you're saying lol, this is fantastic stuff
Jose Alvarez yeah this album did pretty well I'm not going to lie, but do you remember 2008 fleet foxes?
It's a sign of the times that all the most incredible songs and bands are not really well known by the general population. Not sure it's ever really happened before in the past like it is now.
It's more artistic I guess, but I feel like they are *trying* to write artistic music, it doesn't feel as natural as the first album. Cool, you have a 12 string guitar and a bow, if the song doesn't have a decent melody to begin with, well it's not going to make the song much better. The ending of Third of May just sounds so forced - reminds me of a Jack White interview where he says something like "any time I start to visualize someone's attempt to create I become detached to the art."
What's wrong with trying to write artistic music? Do you think they wrote the self-titled album by wandering off into the Blue Ridge Mountains and recording whatever they felt like?
god damn. i get goosebumps every time i listen to them.
Love that reverb
