    I see everything like everyone else. No visual symptoms it's THE OUTPUT that becomes garbled. Example: I see a word or sentence and if I look away to copy I forget most of it, forget spelling, or rearrange words. I can read but the fastest way for me to read is in my head. I do linger on words for a little bit longer than most and that eventually adds up. Reading out loud is much scarier and upsetting than in my head. Or I think of a number and without effort write down the wrong number.

      I can attest to this as well as someone with a dyslexia this is pretty much exactly what I see there's no difference in what I see we can both look at letters and I can tell you the ass is curved and they go in XYZ order but that doesn't necessarily mean that I output the same word or the same spelling or the same number even that's actually there and of course I can realize that but that's not what my mind comes up with when I see it the perception is incorrect or to say it in better terms different one of the advantages of being dyslexic is every single word that you read everything that you see it all goes through your frontal lobe and therefore you think about why is this there a t in the word catch for example they're simply shouldn't be one

      Same here..
      Thinking of a number and then writing the wrong one down may be one of the most infuriating traits.
      Occasionally I catch it as it's happening.
      Typically I have no clue it's happening and I need to proofread everything I write (twice).

    As an Irlen Diagnostician, many people with dyslexia once they are tested and given a language for what they are seeing, a person can tell you immediately if Irlen overlays and spectral filters worn as glasses are helping them see text more clearly and easily. You can actually hear the difference immediately . When that happens it seems almost magical esp in adults with lifelong dyslexia diagnosis. Thanks for this video!!! and addressing scotopic sensitivity syndrome!

    Not all people with dyslexia see words as moving. I have dyslexia and words don't move or float off a page to me. Its more of crapy hand wrighting, not being able to prounce words the right way, spelling words by how they sound, poor gramer and not being able to use the prunceation that comes after a word in the dictanory. New words just look like letters of the alphabet. People who can't understand numbers or read numbers thats totaly diffrent from dyslexica.

    I am pretty old and during my grade school years the school changed from incandescent lighting to fluorescent lighting. I recall this lighting change distinctly and how it affected my ability to read fluently. Not only was my ability to read affected, my ability to concentrate on and absorb audio input was greatly diminished as well. I also found that sitting in natural sunlight (the closer to the window the better) helped diffuse the issues that the florescent lighting caused.

    In my research of dyslexia, I have found that the symptoms list is so broad that it covers at least two other disorders (Convergence Insufficiency and Irlen Syndrome). Both of those eye problems are curable and dyslexia is only treatable. I tried to discuss this with a dyslexia teachers' group and instead of being open to the possibility that their dyslexic kids had been misdiagnosed, they kicked me off of their page. We need to be open to listening and studying new research, if we really want to help kids.

      +Ben Robinson Actually, the handwriting is a problem with the motor skills. Because neurons in the brain are misplaced and wired incorrectly in dyslexics, they often attach to the visual center or the motor center of the brain. This allows the dyslexic to think in pictures and gives them many advantages, but it will sometimes interfere with their fine motor skills.

Oh my gosh! The testimonials from the kids (and adults) who have tried out this font has been amazing. We actually paid to have this font in our books. Go to Google or CZcams and type in DYSLEXIE to see for yourself. Wishing you all the best!

    Being dyslexic simply means that your brain works in a different way to a non dyslexic brain. Nothing else. It's not a sickness that can be fixed by a doctor. One is born with blue eyes and another with dark hair, one needs glasses and another one doesn't... one is born with a dyslexic brain and another with a non dyslexic one. That's all.
    I'm dyslexic myself and I managed to finish a Bachelors in Law, and speak, read and write 3 languages. I just had to find a way for my brain to get to it.

    I was diagnosed with Dyslexia in the second grade. Up until my Junior in High School I could hardly read or write. By some bizarre twist of fate my counselor placed me in a Graphic Arts and Printing program. It was there I learned a trick. In printing you look at letters words and numbers in a different way. Your looking to see if everything is straight and filled in and the spacing. Reading is an afterthought. So if I go into that frame of mind I can make things out. What's interesting though is I worked in the printing industry for 20+ years and I worked with hundreds of different font styles. Helvetica by far was my favorite and easiest font to read and this dyslexic font is based on Helvetica. Old English is the worst for me usually if something is written in Old English I won't even try to read it. Another interesting thing is the illiterate eye test chart is nothing but the letter E turned different ways. Up, down, left and right. They ask you which way the 3 sticks that make E are facing. For a dyslexic your not thinking about the letter E your thinking about the sticks...I think my method of reading taps into this mechanism. In my Senior year in High School when I was retested my reading comprehension and vocabulary was in the gifted range. A few days before graduation I was called into my counselors office and she told me that they don't tell kids this but normally if they can't get someone reading by the fourth or fifth grade...that's it. That person will never be able to read.

    I can't read lists or columns, but find covering my eye helps a lot. If I see a webpage that has any color but white on the background, the words are wavy and they do seem to shake. I can't read phone books because a name and then a break and then the number makes me read the line above or below. I can't even tell someone my phone number, I just hand them the cell phone to call their number, and then save it for me.

    It's better to go to someone who can help you than to try and pretend your dyslexia doesn't exist. The good news is is that, like this video mentioned, there are training exercises and tools you can use to re-wire your brain to compensate for your dyslexia. From the sounds of it these learning techniques and habits aren't all that difficult, and shouldn't require a trip to the doctor. It's not something that you can help having, but the good news is is there are ways of working around it.

      +BookLoverMoments You sound like you have similar reading problems like I do. I have stealth dyslexia. I can read and comprehend fairly well, but my brain does make me skip lines, whole sentences at times. It sounds like that may be a way in which your dyslexia is manifesting itself. I would suggest either using a marker to keep yourself on track for your reading. Also, if you could find some medical documents online and you're willing to do some research, there is a lot of information and the medical reasons behind it that you can find. Perhaps if you were able to show your father the science behind the disorder it would help.

So what neuroscientists are saying is its not a visual processing problem its a Phonological processing problem.

I've heard the common myth that "dyslexics see words flipped around," for example, a dyslexic would read the quoted text as "sxicedysl ese dowsr plfpide noradu." Every time I hear that, I cringe a little. Dyslexics see what is printed on a page. What happens is that the interpreter in the brain messes up, and it comes out differently.

Thats really where the success comes through in dyslexics. You need your own business and it will kick ass. Because they way we think is on a birds eye scale. And you will frive. Don't give up mate no matter how hard it gets. You are going to be successful

    Dyscalculia...that's math. I can't tell you how many times people have cheated me in games requiring adding scores. I can't balance a checkbook so I don't write checks, I can't shop because I can't visualize how much to add prices. I can only add numbers if they equal 10.

    dyslexia isnt something to be embarrassed about at all! so many people have it, myself included, and you really need to seek help, it cant be fixed but it can be made better. all dyslexia really is, is a different way of thinking, thats all.

  • @curlyclaire2
    @curlyclaire2 Před 11 lety +1

    honey, I'm dyslexic and I teach maths to adults who didn't do so well at school. Quite a high number of my students are also dyslexic or have another learning difference.
    Dyslexia is not something that can be "fixed " by doctors or therapists, but you can be helped to catch up on school work and work out how to read and write better so that you aren't embarrassed any more. Please tell your parents, they can make sure that you get this extra help, and can help you organise yourself as home too.

    I don't know if I'm dyslexic. I'm in 8th grade and i have had straight A's all my life, I'm great at math, science, and logical thinking, but i can't spell to save my life, my grammar is non-existent, and reading has become nearly impossible, it takes my 2-3 times longer to read one page compared to my friends (thank god for audible). I have never had to jumbling of letters, but when i read a number/time such as 3:47 ill end up saying 7:43 sometimes.I love learning and gaining knowledge, but reading is form of tourture for me. Idk why this is and I'm sick and tired of giving my best and having my parents yell at me for not practicing enough. Can someone help

      You would know if your dyslexic by the age of 4-5 around that stage and your spelling and other dyslexic symptoms would be really bad like mine were I have dyslexia and SDL disorder and if you managed to write a comment I highly doubt your dyslexic, I've had to go through a lot to get where I am now and if you can just write one comment then your fine

    • @dragonoftaters
      @dragonoftaters Před 8 lety

      +Aiden Lex I apologize for the length of this comment. If you like, just read the last couple of sentences. I am a lot like you. I've always been a good student, great at silent reading and comprehension. I've gotten good grades throughout my education. When I was younger, it took me forever to learn how to write. I couldn't spell my middle name until I was in fourth grade. My handwriting has always been atrocious. And I struggle horribly with trying to write quickly and legibly, or read other's handwriting. I find it near impossible to read cursive. When speaking, I often lose words, get confused on what I was trying to say, or am unable to pronounce words correctly despite knowing in my mind how they're supposed to sound. However, I always associated dyslexia with having poor spelling and not being able to read, so my mother and I both dismissed all these signs I was displaying. It wasn't until this past year when I was 17 that my mom got my little sisters tested. Both had dyslexia, and since it is hereditary, my mom decided to test me and my two older siblings. My four siblings all have traditional dyslexia with the typical problems with reading, writing, spelling, etc. I was diagnosed with something different: Stealth Dyslexia. This means that I can read and comprehend written words fairly well, but my dyslexia expresses itself in other areas. My point with this is that dyslexia is on a spectrum, much like autism. It differs in severity and in the way the symptoms manifest and affect the individual. Based on the information you've provided, I would say you likely do have a form of dyslexia and the symptoms are just manifesting in a unique way. Because you are unique, your brain is unique, and so your dyslexia is unique as well. I would suggest doing some research on dyslexia, make an argument about why you believe you have the disorder, and present your information and argument to your parents. Hopefully, if they will understand what it is like for you, and what dyslexia is, then they can have you tested and you'll get the help you need. Good luck to you!

      SO Aiden Vipgalxx is just straight up wrong. I am Dyslexic and the only reason i was found is because I couldn't read in third grade but after sitting with a special tutor who worked with dyslexic students i was reading at a college level. Most kids with very high IQs are considered to have stealth dyslexia due to the fact that they learn to cope with there weaknesses on there own. Its actually common. Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence or vision for that matter. Dyslexia is more like a character in an rpg who forgot to put any points in the type of mental skills that are used to create text and symbols in your mind so when you think you cant really think in abstract symbols. But just like in an rpg since this one skill set is so weak it makes you stronger in other areas. So like me for instance I could play like full episodes of cartoons in my head as a child and I use to day dream to much since my imagination is so vivid. But the first time i talked to a person with an average brain the fact that they could spell things in there head and it wasn't just an internal voice but like writing on paper it freaked me out i didn't even know other people could do that. But since all my active thoughts are processed either as visual information or auditory information it explains alot about why i struggle in certain areas like spelling or mental math. But why im good at things like algebra and sculpting.

    • @Matt-st1tt
      @Matt-st1tt Před 7 lety

      Fun fact Mia I from personal study i think Dyslexia and Autism are the exact opposite poles of the same spectrum. This in regard to world view. A dyslexic student i feel can be summed up in one way we see the whole picture we need to understand a whole system to really understand something. But and autistic person is the opposite they hyper focus on details that others cant see. so the typical brain is just in the middle of this being able to focus in and pull back just not the the extremes exhibited by dyslexic or autistic people. But this is also why most innovation is created by people like us who are on the fringe. Also if it wasnt for an amazing teacher i had in 3rd grade i would have been just like you because while i was struggling i could read a little and this is the only thing that tipped my teacher off because i was amazing in the rest of my studies.

    Some advice to all the non Dyslexic who think they no dyslexsics its not font that is the problem its the pain of reading due to the lack of boringness. Dyslexics can learn to read but just takes a really long time. Rather than trying all this crap. Find out what they really like simplify it. And make them read it. Doing that over time will work. How do i no that I am severely dyslexic. Now good reader. But spelling still sucks. But thats cool thanks to the right click.

    You start by telling your parents and your school. There is no reason to be ashamed or afraid. I am Dyslexic and have severe Dyscalculia and I am not ashamed. It does not make you less intelligent. I have written published articles and screenplays, you can do great things as well. But don't be ashamed because your brain is wired a little differently.
