  • After the disastrous Osborne judgment of 1909 threatened to cut off the emerging Labour Party from a key source of funds, successful pressure from a small number of Labour MPs and trade unionist Liberal MPs convinced Prime Minister Asquith to introduce the Trade Union Act 1913, which confirmed the lawfulness of unions raising political funds. This report in the Manchester Guardian from 23 June 1913 captures the arguments being made for the need for independent labour representation in the House of Commons.
