  • The swayback pattern is a classic traditional knife. In this overview comparison video we compare modern offerings from Case, Jack Wolf Knives, Great Eastern Cutlery, Viper, and Rough Ryder's standard vs Reserve line. This encompasses a price range of $15 to $300. What are the details, what is fit and finish like, what materials make up the knives, which steel do they include? While Case has been making knives since 1889, GEC came along in 2006, and newcomers like Jack Wolf were founded just last year. The video dives into the details and tells you what you get throughout the various price points.

Honestly the reason why I haven't been watching many knife vids (not just you but Nick, Pete and metal complex) is because I don't have any friggin money to buy new gear. Inflation and taxes were rough this year. If knifetubers are seeing a downtick in views I suspect that's the reason. I've been watching budget oriented videos though.

This point of view from a guy in the 70’s. I never liked crap banging around the bottom of my pockets. Early on when I remembered, I carried a folding knife, usually a Old Timer LB7. When pocket clips came out I was happy to carry a knife daily. I’ve tired of the constant hype regarding contemporary flippers. Now the circle is complete, just bought a Buck 110. I won’t buy now unless it’s made in America. Great presentation, thanks for the thorough review. Baldwinsville, NY

    Also worth noting about Case:
I advise getting them from a seller you can make specific requests to, like "hey make sure there's no gapping on mine when you send it," etc. They can be pretty hit and miss as of late. I have that same model of swayback and mine is pretty good, I don't think the QC is as bad on their Tony Bose models. But I still end up having to send back about 50-60% of all Cases I buy. Also, they always come sharp as a graham cracker out of the box. Just to keep in mind when buying!

Got a bunch of Rough Ryders a few weeks ago, and the Half Hawk was one of them. Flushed the pivot with rubbing alcohol, reprofiled the blade, & it's my current fruit-slicer (yep, got more free time than love... except the love of a nice patina). The centering on mine is almost exactly the same as the one in this video. My only personal nitpicks with it are the crud in the general pivot area, even after flushing, & the scales looking & feeling like they were made of old tires. I'm not sure guys who're into traditionals have 'beaters', but I think this'd be a an option for the outliers.
Got a chortle out of the impression of the sinophobic post-and-runs... unfortunately I had a mouthful of no name onion rings at the time. Ergo, keep up the good work!

GEC is the golden child everyone says to get but I can’t ever get my damn hands on one unless I wanna fork over 2 - 3x the original price. More expensive knife reviewers have artificially made it more desirable and you can’t get it unless you’re there the second it drops or you have connections. I don’t believe they’re worth that much, let alone Boker asking $150+ for their normal production knives. Great overview regardless AKBro.

Love this! Not really a pattern for me, but DAMN you make great reviews. But where is the sort integrated beer review/ badly hidden beer commercial? More of those please ❤

Personally i skip most knife vids from others due to price/unable to even purchase the knife or just dont care for the knife. But with your vids even if i have no interest (like these type of knives) i come for your writing/style. which i enjoy as a newer person into knives and wanting something different form a review.

Most of the Case knives i have handled dont have half stops so i had no idea the swayback would have one. I might have picked one up already if i had known

@Advanced Knife Bro any insider info on that sawcut #14?
Also, great video, as always the best part is reading the comments from all the people who don’t understand sarcasm 😂 not a jab at your entertainment prowess, and unlimited knowledge of all things cutlery and malt beverages (& shovels), the comments are just that awesome.

@@AdvancedKnifeBro C.Risner has em, but he’s keeping that drop close to the denim or possibly tweed vest. Good luck man, may the odds be in our fortune or whatever.

Bro, you still have the same winning formula as you did two years ago. It's just that during that same period, many people turned into losers. Don't let them drag you down and compromise your high standards. For that way thar be dragons.

You should try one of the vintage Victorinox alox knives with the old cross. It gives the similar feel to these. Old school cool. By the way, I use a lot of ad blockers for CZcams because I can't stand today's CZcams ads. But I support your work and some of my favourite creators with opening the video in Microsoft Edge on mute parallel with the one I watch on Chrome. That counts, right?

I like your humour and I have been a long time follower. I guess I have been watching the others more because they do edge retention testing, steel performance expectations vs their their real world use. How they like the ergos. I also feel they impart some knowledge often on sharpening experience on a new knife or knife steels. They also review new knives often, new locks, and things I might be interested in. If you check out Everyday Tactical Dad, his videos are great, too the point, but he also doesn't have many views. Probably because he has no shout outs to other channels and vice versa. I couldn't care less also, for Metal Complex, birdshot (constant movements and camera angle, ugh dizzying) and other channels that are so wordy and exaggerated

I don't remember seeing your knees before. Is it weird that is what stood out for me? I wonder if Shabazz has ever shown the knees... I'm pretty sure Pete has shown the knees.

That GEC’s scales are somewhere between beef jerky and a oozy scab. Maybe a touch of strawberry jam.
