- In mid-2022 we were replacing a solar well pump in an old well at 6300 feet elevation and is supposed to be about 400 feet deep. Without knowing the water level given the current Utah drought conditions, and needing to know the state of the well casing, we decided to drop a GoPro camera down the well to measure the precise water level. It ended up being 318ft down. Pretty interesting to see the different pipe sections and environmental impacts on the pipe casing as it gets down below the water fluctuating water table.
I used a headlight camera (not water proof, unfortunately) strapped to a floating GoPro stick, all tied to some nylon twine. Worked amazingly well!
I did a test drop to about 150ft to be sure the camera right would not get hung up on anything during the drop. I pulled it up and dropped it again to 318ft to find water. The video on the way up is quite interesting as the camera spins around due to the twine unwinding!
Water level is hit just past 8:30 in the video.
Nice view of the back of the lite
i was surprised to see that pvc was used for casing
Cool! 👍🏻
👍 Very interesting to see this! Wonder how the rains this season will affect the water level!
is it really that interesting though?
