You miss to emphasize that 'magical' moment in where the kid start the fire manually using flint. It's the very goal of cid and clive to make a world that does not rely on magic /crystals. A world that will now start to think, invent and innovate.
Also a world of equality, as bearers are now regular people.

Just finished this game and was absolutely enthralled by the ending. The battles were fierce and heartbreaking and Jill and Torgals reaction at the end totally sent me over the edge 😭

This game was a magical, heartfelt experience. Pure Final Fantasy vibes all around. The characters, the story were done so well. SQUARE nailed it on this one and this is one of my favorite Final Fanatsy games of all time.

Clive is definitely alive, the game devs gave all the clues throughout the story dialogues and especially in the side quests. Everyone's picking up some of the points here and there but to lay out the 7 points that basically prove Clive survived:
1. The final crying scene directly references the side quest dialogue. When is Jill crying the sun rises and she stops crying. This is after Jill and Clive have told each other how much they mean to one another in one of the side quests. During the side quest she mentioned how she would cry looking up at the stars at night during dark times. She tells him that no matter how sad and dark the night is, the sun will always return at dawn. And that she knows that Clive will always return to her.
2. Biology: Wolves howl in nature to communicate with their pack mates to tell them where they are and to guide them back. When Cid is dying in front of the group, Torguil whimpers to show remorse and sadness as but actually doesn’t howl even after Cid dies. So the fact that Torgal is howling instead of whimpering is indicative of Clive being alive.
3. The last thing Clive tells Jill is no more broken promises. He had promised her he would return to her no matter what. And we all know Clive is a man who honors his word.
4. Clive tells Harpocrates that after his quest/journey is done he will put down the sword and take up the pen
5. In the final fight with ultima at the end. Ultima tells Clive that 'this resistance is a fantasy he clings to'. Clive tells him that the only one living in a fantasy is ultima and that “this would be his final fantasy” (before Clive finally kills him). In the ending post credits scene, the book is titled “Final Fantasy”. The only one to mention that term was Clive in final battle and he was alone there. So no way Joshua would just happen by coincidence to title it the same thing considering it was based off a isolated conversation between ultima and Clive
6. When Cid died, Clive takes up his mantle and go by his name to honor the life he gave and what he stood for. So in the secret ending cutscene with the book author saying Joshua Rosfield, this would make perfect sense for Clive to do in order to honor his brothers memory.
7. If you 100% the game, the secret ending also has one dialogue line during the final fantasy book scene of audio of Clive giving the final narration saying “and that was the end of the journey”. Which is confirmation by itself that Clive lived to chronicle the story.

2. Torgul never saw Cid as part of his pack. Cid even noted that Clive can have the dog back, without any second thoughts.
3. See point 1.
4. It is red flag, indicating his death.
5. Final Fantasy might also just be a reference to the end of the age of magic, which is fantastical.
6. Or the secret organization aiding the phonix lost their purpose and wrote history down as their last act of duty.
7. Or it is just his last words, before dying. He even confirms before nuking the nexus that his body cant hold on the power.

Only those two hear it Joshua is dead at that point and it was already confirmed earlier that the Phoenix can’t bring back the dead. The book makes the strongest case there is. Clive narrates the beginning and end of the game -> Clive gets the quill to chronicle his journey -> Titles the book the words he used to deliver the death blow to Ultima -> Uses Cid the Outlaw Symbol on the book -> Platinum Trophy is The Chronicler and uses the narrator's (Clive's) closing words as it's subtext -> Circle back to point 1 where Clive takes on the name of others. CID, wyvern etc.
6.)the secret organization wouldn’t know about what happens during the fight with ultima there’s no way they could as they would have no way of getting to origin nor were the present when Clive used the final fantasy quote.
7.) we only see his hand turn to stone and he says the magic is to great and get rid of all magic in the world. My line of reasoning and op make more sense as you can’t counter point 5 Clive was the only one to ever use that term/he narrates the beginning and the end that means he has to be alive to do so. Unless he narrating from the dead which doesn’t make sense. Jill smiling when the sun rises and torgal howling instead of whimpering like he did when cid died. Everything points to my line of interpretation being more solid than yours.
Did anyone think for a second that the woman at the end was an older Jill who was unknowingly pregnant with Clive’s kid?

Well, there are a lot of hints to suggest Clive survived and wrote the "Final Fantasy" book in Joshua's name, to immortalize his brother. One big hint being a side quest with Harpocrates where he gives Clive a quill and suggests writing a book of his adventures. There are other hints as well, such as the symbolism of the sun rising when Jill and Torgal are looking into the horizon.

@@Obadiah_13 This is incorrect. ATL specified that there was a spell called raise that people couldn't cast normally. Clive "raised" Joshua. That was the first when he realized he could not handle the aether. So he used the rest to end magic, and thus the blight. He unequivocally succumbed to the crystal's curse as many bearers and dominants do.
No unfortunately Clive is definitely dead. You see him casting raise on Joshua at the end right before he destroys origin.

Its unclear whether or not Clive actually died based on the reoccurring themes in the game, the final side quests around Jill and Harpocrates, and Clive on the beach. His hand turns to stone but we don't see him actually die. He may very well be alive. The game leaves the ending ambiguous, with sacrifice being the face value interpretation.
The game tells us Clive always had a thing for books and he also was the only one who saw Ultima die. On top of that, Clive is taking the role of narrator towards the end saying "And thus our story ends."
So what I'm thinking is Clive survived, maybe lost a hand, and took over Joshuas name as he did with Cid's name, and wrote that book in his name.
Well he wrote a book called Final Fantasy. Hard to do when you're dead.
As the meteor disappeared, jill knows he he dead and they could feel the energy of each other. But whatever, the truth is, this story was just a fairytale. Nothing of this happened in real. The kids identified themselves with clive and Joshua maybe a reason why they looked similar. If you read a book, your fantasy is creating the chars and how they sounds and so on. The ending is even more great if you know that they just read a book and enjoyed it like a movie cause the only thing they got in this age were books and their fantasy.

One of the greatest games I've played. Loved the music, characters, gameplay and emotional scenes. clive and torgal are my favorite for being badass and kind. The ending had me teared up especially with torgal howling and Jill looking at the sun raising. Also that ending song was beautiful.
Honestly getting pretty annoyed of dying at the end of games. FF15 ending is just like this. Im really hoping we get a better CLEAR answer to wtf juat happened.

My take is the ending is open ended. Its up to player interpretation. If they believe clive died or not, there are many hints that support both opinion.
Everyone cried including Jill after the Origin crystal was destroyed, even the Dog realised Clive weren’t right
There are actually some pretty strong hints that Clive survives the ending, and he penned the book using Joshua’s name to honor his brother. The biggest hint is that Clive is the one who narrates the story, not Joshua.

Ultima didn't create magic. His race discovered magic... Also Joshua didn't seal Ultima's spirit. He just sealed a portion of it or even its kin. Since main Ultima was in Origin. Also, it isn't Ifrit Risen that's seen in the murals. It's Ultima's real form. Wings are the proof. Ifrit Risen has different wings! Also Clive didn't die, he took Joshua's name as the pen side quest proves it.

is it me or he didnt talk about metia dissapearing, which for me represents the end of magic, and jill after feeling his death, kinda smiles when the sunset rises again as she seems to see something in the distance, hinting that clive didnt die, and maybe joshua too was alive since he wrote the book

Jill sees the sun in the distance, a new dawn, which symbolizes another day and a new beginning. We have no confirmation of him surviving, only Joshua as Clive used Raise on him.
Metia disappeared because her wish to have Clive return became truth.
Metia was most likely a construct created by Ultima’s race. It ceased to function when magic ceased to be. Jill never felt Clive’s death; she simply felt the “death” of magic and knew something significant had happened. The rising sun signifies the end of Ultima and his spell of darkness. Jill was relieved to know Clive had won. None of this confirms he lived. We know he lived by the absence of any death scene, and the presence of the Final Fantasy book penned by him (in Joshua’s name, but isn’t Joshua literally a part of him now, meaning it’s just one more moniker amongst many he uses).
FF16-2: Clive apparently didnt die and is now EVIL having consumed all the power he is now basically unkillable and is now working together with SEPHIROTH.... now JILL and CLOUD must set on a journey to stop CLIVE and SEPHIROTH... (typical square enix lore)

There is nothing in the ending that indicates Clive died.
In my opinion, Clive died and he was successful in reviving Joshua. Clive surviving while he's being consumed by the curse would make no sense.
But Phoenix can’t bring anybody back from the dead, and Joshua has been long dead before that fight. Cid had a whole stone arm and he lived until getting hit with a laser

Thank you Square Enix for a truly enjoyable Final Fantasy. As a long time fan, can say that 16 was a very worthy entry into the catalog. Up there with one of the best stories and battle mechanics in the series. Every main character had an enjoyable arch. Can’t compliment the main narrative enough!

If youve played the side quests Jill wanted to leave the area and spread her wings...now that everything is settled and Clive no long can fight because of his hand he then escapes into the night with Jill
At 2:07 they said Ultima awokened when we destroyed Drakes Head. I'm not so sure about that... That was just a part of Ultima. The one that went into Joshua and emerged at the end when Ultima called for it. We know not when Ultima awokened but Ultima said they aklwoke from the slumber to see what had happened and began searching for the vessel which led to the manipulation of the core characters. Presumingly that's when Barnabas came to be and rose to be King

@@wiseguy240Winston before going to the orgin do all harpocretes side quests, and also tô do the jill side quest, you need to do a series of side quest first, tô begin with, talk to jote at the nursery, after doing her side quest, joshua's side quest will be avaliable, after doing his sidequest, go to your Office and read his Letter and Accept his quest.

Whether he is dead or alive is left ambiguous. That way if they want to make more content with him they won’t have to jump through weird narrative hoops. They also want people discussing it, but Clive is dead in my canon because this game killed a lot of my enthusiasm for the brand. I’m glad a lot of people liked it, but some are really defending it tooth and nail as if any criticism of it is a direct attack on themselves. It’s pretty extreme and over the top.

Loved the game and its story for the most part, but I’m a little disappointed in this game, alongside FFXV, embracing the kind of martyrdom that FFX so famously and categorically rejected. Especially with all of the side missions before the final stage so emphasizing living through this and returning home to their loved ones. It’s understandable that this didn’t happen, but still disappointing nevertheless.
The narrator in the beginning of the game is Clive Rosfield, who is telling the Final Fantasy story.
FF16: Another game where you fight for hours only to die (and make a woman cry at the end).
Would've preferred a happy ending for all as a payoff, myself, but you do you, Square.

It’s heavenly implied Clive lived through side quest and the red moon disappearing meaning Jill’s wish finally came true.

It still doesn’t explain the beginning of the game as to why Clive saw Joshua from the future and influenced Clive to transform into Ifrit and try and kill Phoenix!!!
Not only that but why would Joshua even bother “contain” Ultima if Ultima was already actively influencing all of the events around them. All that really accomplished was making Joshua sick.
The hooded man at phoenix gate wasn't joshua from the future, it was ultima, ultima even says at that point "we have found you"
The writers wanted to specifically confuse you with hooded man (ultima) and hooded dominant of fire (grownup joshua) in the beginning.
It is later revealed in the end of the Titan arc that the hooded man was ultima, and was manipulating events in the shadows, it was he who triggered the events on phoenix gate, it was he who instigated drake's breath, and it was he that manipulated hugo kupka to consume vast amounts of aether all with the goal of grooming clive to absorb all of the others' essences to become a perfect vessel for ultima.
Ultima needed all of his forms to be complete, at the very last mission it is revealed that joshua trapped one of ultima's many forms, this delayed ultima to an extent that he wasn't able to claim clive as early as he wanted giving clive enough time to build his strength and will and was eventually able to repell ultima's influence even after joshua had perished and ultima made complete.

Not sure why him looking at his hand and it falling down equals he died. Easily could have just passed out.
Because it was turning to stone, it’s a curse seen earlier in the game.

You don’t answer everything here. What did Clive do to Joshua before he died? Who wrote the book?
Technically speaking he only have the power of 7 Eikons or seven of the eight elements. Since Ifrit and Phoenix are two halves of one whole something they don't really explain why. And Leviathan is most likely going to be DLC content
Joshua mentions Leviathan in the game as the “lost eikon” or something like that. Idk where you heard about dlc but they’ve clearly stated they’ve zero plans to do more.

The ending is pretty much like Dragon Quest 11 with the book.
Some gods they are they can create humanity and turn themselves into mother Crystal but they can't prevent or undo the Aether deficiency that causes the blight.

This ending reminds me of Cowboy Bebop. Laid out on the ground and star fades away. Like is Spike (Clive) dead or alive, its left to the players or watchers. Im in the camp Clive survived though because of the side quest like people mentioned who else could have wrote that book. Also you didn't actually see his whole body turn white, it was just his arm.
Everyone in the hideout could write the book as all of them knew that Bahamut, Ifrit and Phönix fought against Ultima and in the end, won.
It is written very open if none survived, both or only one of them.
About the curse, yes we only see his hand but lets be real, what took several years with Cid, happens within seconds to Clive.
If the book is written by Joshua, it means that Clive saves him with the flames of the phoenix before destroying the mother crystal and lives to write the story
