Active lore feature is certainly an interesting way of letting players know about the world without turning the dialogues into an artificial sounding exposition dump. It's brilliant.

Yeah, it's great so we can get a game where we don't get this weird exposition dumps that feel so out of place that they take you out of the game like Vivian did with her exposition dumps disguised as "lessons" in FF16. Oh wait.
So the best "new storytelling" feature in ff16 is the history themed quest log/codex that was in Final Fantasy Tactics over 20 years ago.
I'm not sure this is the selling point everyone thinks it is.

It's great, and it be great to see in future games, but it shouldn't become a crutch for developers to lean on and get away with lazy writing.

It's very nice to see how better they got at action gamestyle since crisis core on PSP. Loving it
Triangle Strategy also did a great job of letting you hit a button when somebody was talking to see their portrait and background story so you could follow along more easily.

Demo was amazing, and worth experiencing for the story aspect alone. If you have a PS5, you should try the demo at least.

It’s hard to get a nomination when the year is PACKED with marquee titles for damn near every company. Everyone brought their A game to 2023, and unfortunately you can’t win em all.
Finally, it’s time to play another Final Fantasy masterpiece! That active lore feature is a massive move in the right direction too.

10 hours in, side quests are mostly forgettable (for now) and the boss battles are some of the best in gaming!

They dont even 10/10 every Nintendo game. A lot of people loved the last 2 Zelda games and they got a 10 each. Metroid Dread got a 9, the last set of Pokemon games got a 6 (the 2 Arceus & S&S got better but still no 10s), Luigi's Mansion 3 got an 8.3, etc.
9 is a perfectly fine score, a great one in fact. But just for a small second they found it lacking, thats literally all it means. Not like anyone should take stock in numbers any company gives anyway, doesnt have an effect on your or anyone else's experience while playing.

Idk, hogwarts legacy was okay. It honestly just felt like AC origins, but with wizards.
There are only 2 games listed here that are actual GOTY material.
So glad this highlighted the active time lore, biggest pet peeve is playing a game and not knowing what’s going on. This really took the game over the top for me

9 is my favorite game of all time, but you are mistaken. they function very differently, ATE's are optional scenes, not immediate lore references.

For people who don't know. Square Enix already acknowledged and addressed the framerate issue. Many problems will be fixed in the Day-1 patch 1.03+ (Demo was version 1.01) but the biggest fps fix will be a post launch patch, if options to turn off Motion Blur and so on. My guess is patch will drop after 1-2 weeks, so if you want the full FF16 experience, just wait a bit. Also @DigitalFoundry will surely make a in-depth video of how the performance of FF16 is.

hard disagree, didn't need to see footage of scenes 10 hours in the game when there's plenty of footage from the demo.
Those standards are super low. You can tell the reviewer played the game? Isn't that their job?
They learned their lesson with 15 to not be too ambitious. People want a single player campaign or all multiplayer, not a little of both, and we definitely don't need unnecessary game systems to clutter the world to make it feel full. With that said, please make your version of Granblue Fantasy Relink for us co op enjoyers!
You say that but look at the massive success of souls games which manage to blend single player gameplay with multiplayer elements.

If they understood what the real final fantasy fans want then they would of already put a 3 or 5 disc game out that mashed up the best of 7 8 9 and 10 and gave us something special that had the feel those games did but nope just 20 years of failing and they still haven't learned

Love this review! Its funny you point out how great the soundtrack is though as I've been very distracted by the soundtrack playing during dialogue. This game is so great in so many ways, but music during the dialogue is just distracting at best.
Change the sound settings. You can control how loud types of sounds are or turn individual ones off.
Gonna replay this on Hard mode now. Beat it 2 months ago. Legendary game.

Yes and no. The weapons change, but Clive's outfit changes once in the game until you get to DLC. In my opinion, the gear, or lack thereof, didn't take away from the amazing game that it was.

They will be releasing a patch for it soon. It has been announced.
Like @mach3wgamer is saying, the full game does not CURRENTLY have a way to disable motion blur - but SE has confirmed that they will include it in a patch some time after release.

9/10 great review
A 9/10 is very generous more like 7/10 because as a series Final Fantasy has some of the most boring side quests in gaming. Atleast in Tears of the Kingdom, the side content was memorable and had actual impact on the world.
Side content in tears was lame tf. The new zones were an absolute snoozefest, just there to be bland sandboxes for vehicles. Game is way too grindy as well.
The best part by far was the overworld with all the interesting caves and changed. The other areas each had a single overused theme that got tiring quick. The dungeons were still really mediocre.
Absolutely nowhere at any time within any game has side quests been worth it.

Western RPGS have some of the best and memorable side quests, Witcher, Bauldurs Gate, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Disco Elysium, Mass Effect, Diablo, Dragon Age, Deus Ex, Fable.
And you might not personally enjoy any of these franchise mentioned above, but you're being disingenuous to push a narrative thats easily debunked.
