    Excellent project! You can fix the focal length with a +10 diopter DSLR macro lens, held below the reflector, although the assembly starts to get a bit unwieldy since the phone needs to sit another 10cm below the lens.

    Cool idea!
    There's a shorter way to compute the hypotonus on a 45/45/90 triangle. Just multiply the length of one of the sides by the square root of 2.

    Interesting! Is there a way to do something similar to this but with an opaque background instead of transparent? Like putting a giant prism on the screen but without needing a block of optical glass?

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Find something reflective (shiny) and use that instead of the clear plastic that I used. Maybe something black? Or white, depending on what color you're projecting? If you can't find anything reflective then do exactly what I did but put a piece of black cardboard behind it.

  • @eformance
    @eformance Před 7 lety +2

    For a square, or a triangle with 2 equal length right sides, you don't need the Pythagorean Theorem, you can use another shortcut, just multiply the sides by the square root of 2: 2.125 * 1.414 = 3.00475

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 7 lety +2

      Sorcery!
      Hmmm... Let's see if I can spoil the magic...
      c=sqrt(a^2+b^2)
      c=sqrt(a*a + b*b)
      Since a=b...

    • @eformance
      @eformance Před 7 lety +2

      Only works on squares or triangles where a=b. Here's another square root trick, the equivalent diameter of 2x a circle is 1.414x the diameter. 10mm dia + 10mm dia = 14.1mm dia equivalent. You can also expand on that, if you have 3 circles the equivalent diameter is the cube root, for 4 circles it's the 4th root and so on. You may ask why you care? How does a twin-blade 55mm throttle body compare to a 75mm single blade throttle body? Twin 55mm blades is equivalent to a single 77mm throttle body. If you're a car guy, it all makes sense.

      I haven't tried bicycle tubes myself, but there are plenty of people on the web who say they've tried it and it didn't work. There may be impurities in the rubber.

    Hey I was just wondering what would happen if you did not use a 90 degree angle and have the lenght and height the same. Would the light still reflect or would the proportions be wierd?
