    I have been watching Singapore review videos for the past hour! THIS was the best video I watched hands down! My daughter is whizzing through TGATB level K, she absolutely loves it and begs to do more lessons each day. I got insecure because of articles I read about mastery curriculums being better/spiral one’s leaving holes in their math foundation. Ultimately, I think I’m going to do the same thing you are: stick with TGATB for now (after all, she LOVES math right now because of it and I don’t want to squash that), and as she gets older possibly switch over to Singapore if I still feel worried about mastery

      That is so nice thank you!! You made my day lol it’s so hard to switch when they love it. I think it’s a good choice to stick with it! Mastery does get pretty boring 🙈😂 I’m also looking into Shiller math but there’s not much as far as reviews. I may get that for the coming year because I’m awful when I have too much time to dwell on my decision haha researching to make sure I made the right choice too much

    We actually started out the school year using TGATB K math and about nearly halfway through I got frustrated with it and switched to Dimensions k. TGATB is so beautiful, but I really love the mastery of SM. My daughter is also less frustrated which makes the switch worth it!

      Oh good to know!! Was is the older or newer version if TGTB? I’m definitely not afraid to switch part way if it’s not working lol

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these! I'm debating a switch from dimensions also, and TGATB is one I have been debating. We have 4 levels happening here, and I completely agree that it's a lot for teaching! I will say that the number of games options etc, gets less already with level 1, but still requires more than what simply good and beautiful seems it would. It's the hardest subject for me to choose 😝 I also love Singapore method but life sometimes dictates the amount of time each subject can receive :) and I agree that mastery can get repetitive.. then I wonder if spiral would solidify the concepts enough 😂 I go back and forth, debating! Anyways, thanks for the look inside TGATB and your thoughts!

      Hahah you’re process sounds the same as mine 😂😂 I debated for sooo long and still am not 100% on my decision 🙈 the other day I thought to myself “well if I change my mind at least I haven’t wasted that much money on tgtb” I’m glad I’m not alone in my high difficulty of choosing math haha I love math so maybe that’s part of it. I just want to do it all 🤣

    Thank you for this thorough video. I’m using TGATB math with my 4yr old and experienced the same. He also wasn’t ready for number sentences. He flew through the pre k book, but math has been a challenge. I’m looking for a curriculum that introduces the concepts at a slower more gradual pace with more repetition. I’m going to check out Singapore. Seems like a winner. Thank you again

    This is my second year homeschooling with a curriculum and I chose TGATB. We do love it but I was wondering if it was enough and was looking into Dimensions! But I print everything out for free so didn’t want to spend $150 for each of my kids either 😅😅😅 So I may stick to it and see if I grab a workbook from dimensions to supplement if I feel I need more review

      Thank you I’m so glad!! It is a big expense each year to do Singapore and while it’s nice to reuse the teachers guide, I don’t like that the student books are reusable. I’m going to do a video on it once I decide, but I’m looking into shiller math. Super expensive but it’s a one time purchase for 4 years of math and all the kids which is amazing.

    Important to note, they don’t expect students to do every single question on every single page. The teacher instruction should be at the centre of any curriculum, not the work book.

    • @PiningOverHome
      @PiningOverHome  Před rokem +1

      Yes they do say for dimensions they include an overabundance of problems, so that you don’t have to add additional worksheets. I don’t love the idea of constantly skipping, but that is a personal opinion, not coming straight from the curriculum. And I agree, their guide books are very necessary and important for the entirety of the program.

      @@PiningOverHome I generally introduce new concepts through fun activities with manipulative’s and use the work book as a guide and for reinforcement. My boy might complete half the material provided in the workbook for most concepts then we move on. But that’s only because most of our math is done through hands on activities.

    • @PiningOverHome
      @PiningOverHome  Před rokem

      Yes that’s what I prefer as well! For them to learn the topic prior to book work. I don’t recall any concepts that they have met for the first time being through the textbook/workbook. I am slowly adjusting to doing fewer of the problems on each page haha especially since 1st grade has a lot more than kindergarten did!

    I'm very new to the homeschooling world and my math research landed me exactly between these two curriculums. As a newbie, is it a big no-no to go through two curriculums at once? I like the mastery of Singapore, but I think my son would enjoy TGATB more...?

    • @PiningOverHome
      @PiningOverHome  Před rokem +1

      It would be pretty confusing to do both at the same time since they have different approaches, so in this case I’d recommend against doing them together. I thought my kids might think Singapore is boring because it’s not as colorful etc, but they absolutely love it! I ended up staying with it, because I think it’s more beneficial to them long term. Singapore has lots of games etc in the parent guidebook, so if you have the time to devote to setting it up then it is even more fun than TGTB! TGTB just makes it easier since you don’t have to do any of the set up yourself, but you’re also more limited in that respect. Hope that helps!!

    I've had the same feelings about TGTB math - wait why are we doing this when we haven't done what I think comes before it. We're doing the first grade now and adding money before learning 2 digit addition I think was something I was confused about. My kid had no issues with it and loves it and is learning and then going off on tangents on her own. So ultimately if she's enjoying it and she's learning. I do wonder how we will fair in higher grades. I am on the lookout for other math if we ever feel TGTB isn't working but since I could download 1-5 for free I did in case they ever stop offering it.

      Okay I’m glad it’s not just me. That’s what I’m thinking too is reevaluate when they’re a bit older. I do love that since it’s free download I can review it all before deciding 🙌🏼

      Apologia math is currently available for 1st to 3rd grade but they are adding more each year and are like a Christian Singapore math curriculum for homeschool. It's another similar option if you're looking for more ideas. :)

    People have different math brains. My nephew, now a grown adult, hated the spiral approach because once he learned it, he had it. My daughter, same age as him, needed the review of concepts to keep everything fresh in her mind. Both are successful adults now and home-schooling their own little ones. The beauty of home-school is you can adjust any program to fit your child's needs. If a topic is too easy, make it a bit more challenging or do more than one lesson per day. My 5 year old grandson is doing TGTB K. His dad uses the curriculum for ideas on how to progress in the topics, but if it's too easy he makes it harder. For example, instead of "can you count to 20" (which he could do already), he says "can you count to 50; can you count to 50 by 2's, by 5's, by 10's." There's a lot more to teaching the brain than we think. My grand-daughter in grade 4 doesn't think she needs to learn cursive, and in fact, many schools no longer teach it. But there are benefits to cursive such as improved neural connections, increased writing speed, better fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, and improved spelling to name a few. So the bottom line is that home education can be tailored to a child's needs, and is so much better than being in a classroom where they may get left behind because the class has to move on to the next thing.

      Yes!!! I love your view on homeschooling. I can already see how my 4 & 6YOs differ in how they learn and am figuring out how to teach them, so they can best learn. Definitely not something possible in public school!

    I think I’m general the issue with TGTB is that they don’t lay the best foundation of number sense. It didn’t work for us. We really like Math With Confidence.
