  • This was my experience of the Fires Creek Rim Trail in the Nantahala National Forest (North Carolina, USA) on 07/21/23 & 07/22/23. The 25 mile loop trail is very challenging and my hope is that this video is not only enjoyable to watch but will also assist those interested in potentially hiking this trail. As always, thanks for watching and your support! - Clint

This video was perfect. It's one of the major factors I look for in outdoor videos. An honest review

Thank You. Information I needed to know with my compromised physique. If/when I get back hiking, I'll need an easier hike.

Thanks for posting. It's nice to see someone try and know when it's time to stop. This video was important for folks to see that it is ok to assess and change plans.

This was wonderful! Thanks so much for being honest with your feelings, keeping it real, & especially for including those great considerations at the end. Everything in life can be a lesson learned. Thanks again for sharing with us those valuable lessons you learned that, in turn, will help the rest of us in our adventures.

Great video! Please don't give up! Fifth times a charm! 😃 I live 15 min away from the Rim Trail. I never hike it in the summer. The best time is March thru early May. April is my favorite time. The spring flowers are just amazing and the woods are still open enough, you can see the Bears and Hogs before they see you!

I'm not surprised you got off trail, I was watching the footage of the "trail" and was thinking, man you'd have to check the gps to make sure you were actually on the trail. No apologies needed, you have to make call that is right when you are there. I can't imagine night hiking and bushwhacking. I can't wait to see the next attempt at the Rim. I'm pretty sure every hiker out there has had to call it at one time or another.

You got it next time, I think two nights sounds sensible. I hope you enjoyed the overall experience and lessons even though you were disappointed not to finish.
It feels like this summer has been brutal, I’ve not been out anywhere near enough lately. That plus the rain must have been tough!

I did enjoy the experience although I was disappointed in not finishing. I will regroup, repack and finish that trail in the future though 💪🏽

Hiked parts of the rim trail with my grandpa as a kid and remember it being totally brutal, but don’t remember it being so overgrown. I tried a day hike out there a few months back but saw enough wild hogs that I decided to skedaddle. I plan to make a go of the full rim trail eventually.

From my experience and talking with others, avoiding summer is best. I’m definitely going again but might try late winter/early spring and planning 2 nights so I can enjoy it more.

Came across your AllTrails post while considering my October hikes. Late May is when my hiking season ends unless I fly out west due to the heat and humidity in the southeast. Can't believe you attempted to tackle this in the summer so I was curious to watch the vid. That pack looked on the heavy side. Probably could shed some pounds using a critical eye.
Check out LMNT for the sweaty trail stomps. I'm a big fan and it's hands down better than Liquid IV (I'm my opinion). For sure check out "Standing Indian, Mount Alberta, Nantahala Basin Loop" southwest of Franklin, NC if you haven't already. It's not too far from this trail. I did it late fall last year and enjoyed. Will probably be doing the Kimsey Creek variant in a couple of weeks if I don't find something else by then.
I loved the morning happiness scene and heel tap! I know that feeling man!!! Such a joy to hike and be in nature.

Hey man! Awesome video-where did you get that map of Fires Creek? I’d give anything for that printed map you got! I got turned around once at defeat knob! Not a fun experience but it was one I’ll never forget! Any leads on that map would be AWESOME

What kind of stove are you using? I've never seen one like that before.

Pretty sure it’s an Esbit folding stove. Search that name on google/Amazon and you’ll see it.

Man, that overgrowth did not look like a fun experience! Maybe find out when (if) the trail maintainers go out, and try again the week after, haha.

I live very near the Rim Trail. I do my best to maintain it, along with most of the descending trails. I work on it from around Oct to Feb. I would recommend backpacking it March through early May. (Never June July Aug) I've Backpacked it twice, Once in late Feb......kinda cool at night, and once in April; so beautiful with all the flowers!

It does for a bit and then I don’t notice it much. I hate that I could silence it for the video but I had run into bears before on this very same hike and wasn’t keen on that happening again 😅
