Here is one of the many gems in Dylan's treasure trove of unreleased, unfinished, unpolished, but nonetheless immaculate creations. There's something about this recording that makes me feel like I'm melting.
Some background: During the infamous 1966 European Tour, in which Dylan traveled with The Hawks (later becoming The Band), guitarist Robbie Robertson would usually jam with Dylan in various hotel rooms in between concerts, helping him work out half-baked compositions. Luckily, legendary filmmaker DA Pennebaker managed to capture some of these moments. This piece was recorded at the North British Station Hotel (now the Millennium Hotel) in Glasgow, Scotland, along with three other works in progress; follow the link below to listen to the full session. In my opinion, however, this one is the best of the lot.
I believe the words to this song were improvised on the spot, with perhaps some kind of general blueprint of the vibe. This would make sense, as the words are certainly not up to par with circa 1966 Dylan. It's funny to me, though, that even ad-libbed Dylan lyrics trump that of most of his contemporaries. In that sense, this recording is a testament to Dylan's creative brilliance and efficient songwriting ability.
This is an edit of the original recording (which you can hear below). On the source tape, Dylan and Robertson pause many times to work out the chord progression. I edited these pauses out to create a more complete, polished track. I also upgraded the sound using professional studio software. Hope you enjoy the final product.

Anthony - Funny you should describe him like that - as in one of my dreams about Dylan I saw the image of a hand of fire inside a suitcuff - the hand's index finger was pointing ahead as it floated over a road and Dylan and a whole bunch of people were following it . . .
another dream of Dylan he and I were lying a four poster brass bed and he said 'you got it you just need some publicity' just then there was an earthquake and I grabed my packpack and jumped out the window. I've had quite a few dreams of Dylan and I'm sure many people have - expecially song writers - wouldn't it be interesting to have a book of the dreams people have had of him?

An interesting dream about the hand of fire, Bob Dylan following down the road. Thanks for sharing! I would never think that I'd be sharing a Bob Dylan dream, but hell, might as well. This is from my dream notebook in 1995. "I and others meet Bob Dylan. He asks me specifically to go home with him. It sounds sexual but isn't. I don't want to hurt my two (women?) companions but I don't ask Bob to have them over too. Bob's room has unfinished sheet-rocked walls. Also, his house has other buildings in it. His house has a dome over it. We remember having seen the dome but didn't know what was under it. Then there is a sky in his house. But his room has a large unfinished, permanently unfinished wall. And speakers … He is very lonely. He wants me to comfort him. He wants me specifically to come back later and comfort him."

@@Anthony-hu3rj Hi Anthony. Wow - the symbolism in your dream is manifold. Do you know that in his house in Malibu Beach has either a dome or a pyramid of copper for a roof? I think Dylan is lonely beyond belief even tho I don't think he's elitist or anti social. I would almost assume he's a heroin addict except that he remembers all the words to some of his most complicated songs and performs them still. Another dream I had was of he and his wife sitting on a grassy slope watching an Indianapolis 500 type car race. I probably wrote all my dreams of him down over the decades but can't think of any more. Maybe you have some aspect of your character that really would offer companionship to him. Extraordinary thing for him to specifically ask for your company. Aloha.

    In the English-speaking workd, Dylan is regarded mainly as a wordsmith;
to the rest of the world who catch only a word or two here and there
he is considered as a gifted melodist and phrasing master vocalist. This is one stellar example.
Snippets of this melody would turn up again in "You're A Big Girl Now" from the hallowed Blood On The Tracks.

Im 39 years old, as a young child my father gave me a copy of, "Oh, Mercy" for Christmas, I must have been around 7 or 8 years old. The year before I asked for a Walkman and I guess he noticed how much I enjoyed music since I used it more than any toy I ever had. I heard this sing a few days ago for the first time and I have played it so many times again since. It reminds me of a girl I knew when I was around the same age I was when I got the Walkman, though I haven't seen her in years, I have never left her behind. Something about a certain type of sadness in the heart is nostalgic and also the only remnants left of something that meant so much to an individual. She will always be my first love, maybe the only love.

The internet may have been created by the military-industrial complex for very nefarious reasons and it may have made our lives miserable and confusing beyond all belief…but the fact that it has allowed this edit to happen and be shared makes it all worth it.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Ill always have the memory of seeing my brother listening to Dylan while he laid on his back on the front lawn looking up at the clouds. I played Dylan on my record player using an extention cord, and told him he just had to listen. And he did. 1966. Miss you John

There’s a brilliant song just waiting to burst out of this. Don’t get me wrong, I love this ad libbed gem, but what a shame that he didn’t carry it on through to an officially released recording. It’s got lots of emotion in there.

Absolutely gorgeous. Back in pre-historic times, I dubbed to cassette the snatches hear on a rough VHS copy of Eat the Document that then circulated. It was so obvious that this was one of Bob's prettiest melodies and that it needed (and still needs) official release. The Dylan camp should be smart and issue this version as a single or something,

One of Dylan's greatest "lost" songs. We are lucky that, one way or another, so many of the gems that could have been truly lost have been preserved and restored and are heard. Ever since he arrived in NYC over 60 years ago, people knew they were in the presence of an extraordinary figure.

Where she leads me I do not know
Donde ella me guía, no lo sé
Well, she leads me where she goes
Bueno, ella me lleva a donde ella va
    I can't find her nowhere
No puedo encontrarla en ninguna parte
    Well, she needs me here
    Bueno, ella me necesita aquí
All aware I can't hear her walk
Todo consciente de que no puedo oír su caminar
I just cannot hear her talk
    Simplemente no puedo oírla hablar
Though sometimes, you know you will
Aunque a veces, sabes que lo harás
And when she comes my way
Y cuando ella viene por mi camino
I'll just be left any night or day
Simplemente me quedaré, ya sea de noche o de día
    I will hear her say
    La escucharé decir
    That I don't wanna try
    Que no quiero intentarlo
    I tried, also cried
    Intenté, también lloré
But I can't leave her behind
    Pero no puedo dejarla atrás

    *I Can't Leave Her Behind*
And I just can’t roam you, to tell the truth I should come to this hotel
Where she leads me I do not know
Well, she leads me where she goes
    I can’t find her nowhere
    Whenever she comes by
It makes me hurt to see her cry
    I just can’t hide
But I know her so well
But I can’t leave her behind
    [Dylan: This is the bridge]
Now you might think it’s foolish
    [Dylan: Now it's G]
To be this way and I can’t say to her
And you might think it’s ugly to go back to her directly
But I can’t hide, it do not mind to me
    Well, she leads me here
All aware, I just can’t hear her walk
I just can’t hear her talk
Though, sometimes, you know, you will
And when she comes my way
I’ll just be left any night or day
    I will hear her say
    That I don’t wanna try
    I tried, also cried
But I can’t leave her behind
[Robertson: Oh, I see the form]
And I go many times out of my way
I just hope you’ll hear me say
That I can’t find it true
    What evidence that I'd find
If I don’t make it and you do
    I will swear to you
    That if you don’t
Cry, try, to ride the sign
    That I left her behind
    [Roberton: To the bridge
    Dylan: Ah?
    Roberton: Bridge]
    Now she hear her walk
    Back when I was young
And you, any time, but I just can’t
    She knows she’s the one
    And she’s still here from
And when I hurt for you
More than I hurt for anyone
All my hurt comes from some I just rode
I swear I’d trade to you
The whole wide world if you’d want
Take it and I can’t help it
But I try to tell to you
That I just can’t leave her behind
