- This is another canoe trip video that I digitized and edited from Dick Irwin’s Hi8 tapes. Dick filmed quite a bit on that trip and did a great job of capturing many aspects of traveling by canoe in the north.
In 1994 we traveled from Schefferville in northern Quebec to Nain, on the Labrador Coast.
We took a roundabout route in order to explore the country around the northern tributary of the Kogaluk River.
You can see a slide show of our three trips on the Kogaluk at: www.alstirt.com/kogaluk-river

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
Great stuff. There always seems to be some magic to pre-internet trip reports or videos. Trips like this in 2024 are still impressive, but 30 years ago was a whole different ball game.
Adventure of a lifetime
Friggin awesome thank you for posting you got a love Labrador❤
Thanks for posting your trip! What a trek…loved your load out with all those humongous packs!
Thanks for sharing Al. I had forgotten that we shared the train ride with you till I saw my cameo while helping load canoes.
In the modern you-tube era, I've seen a bunch of trips in which certain aspects of the trip were designed specifically for youtube purposes. That hasn't to my knowledge yet included deliberately choosing a kevlar boat, let alone a 30 lb ultra-light. I have a 30 lb solo canoe myself, and it's not going to survive one single hit in rapids like that. I can see how the soloist could have paddled out in one of the tandems if the canoe was damaged late in the trip, but there's too much gear to do that in the early stretch along the dePas.
How did he film the scenes where there are four of you paddling on the river together?
What are the dates of your trip? June/July?
