TAKING OUR MACAW TO AN AVIAN VET FOR THE FIRST TIME | SHELBY THE MACAW

  • Hey flockers,
We had a very worrying week last week and were left with no other option than to take Shelby to see a specialist avian vet 2 hours from where we live. Taking your macaw to the vet can be a worrying time for anyone who owns macaws, and as this was our first proper vet appointment we were so concerned with how she would be!
If you ever suspect anything is wrong with your pet macaw, or if there are behavioural changes with your macaw, always ALWAYS take them to see an avian vet as soon as possible. Parrots and macaws are very good at hiding their illnesses and a problem with a macaw can only usually be detected when it is too late!
We really hope you enjoyed this video and look forward to bringing more pet vlogs your way from here on.
If you did enjoy the video please give it a big thumbs up and be sure to subscribe to the channel for more on blue and gold macaws, macaw training, free flying macaws, training tips for macaws and general parrot care.

Have you ever taken your macaw to the vet? How did they behave?

So happy that Shelby is doing well!🥰🥰🥰 I kept thinking the stress of a veterinarian visit is stressful🥺🥺🥺 enough to cause feather picking.....but of course Shelby just takes it all in stride!🙂🙃🙂🙃🙂🙃 I just love listening to her chatter🎶🎶🎶....she sounds so happy! It's so awesome that Shelby💋💋💋 has a wonderful family that loves her. Take care and bless you all!🌹🌹🌹

It’s so stressful for most birds to visit a vet. It’s why we advocate lots of desensitisation training! But even so, it can still be horrible for both bird and owner.

Glad everything is ok! I recently went through something similar with my alexandrine (some plucking under his wing, no underlying medical cause, irritated skin, has since resolved). Feather destructive behavior can be really complex! You can do absolutely everything 100% correct, rule out medical causes, and still have a bird that plucks or barbers. Some have even proposed that the issue can be traced back to early life stage experiences such as being removed from their parents before learning proper grooming! Thank you for posting this video! I think it can be really isolating for people who have birds displaying FDB despite their best efforts.

This! We were so sad because we felt like we were doing everything right. But you’re so spot on with early life experiences (or lack of) can cause plucking later down the line. We actually considered this and thought maybe it was the problem as Shelby never preens! We have since bought a pet cam for her aviary and it turns out she does preen a lot, but it’s always on her own in her cage rather than in front of us. Turns out on this occasion it was an irritated pin feather but can be soooo many other possible reasons

@@ShelbyTheMacaw I feel your sadness! It's funny because I ALSO bought a pet cam to watch Petrie during the day while I'm at work...of course, now I get "loud sound detected" notifications every 2 minutes 😂 So glad everything worked out for you guys!

Half a year ago I wondered how Shelby is able to fly without much of a tail. And now these feathers seem to be extremely long! :/)

Crazy isn’t it! They grew back so quickly considering in January she had zero tail 🤣

What did they say about the feather plucking? Also how much did the visit cost?

I work for the vet company we visited so get w discount. Also, it said on the video, but basically she had a couple of pin feathers that were irritating her and painful so she was trying to get them out
