I heard this on MTV a long time ago and it gets stuck in my head every now and then and I think this woman never got the credit she deserved
Nikka was like a funky early 00s Janis Joplin. She was so unique and memorable. I will never understand to this day why she never blew up big. She was an amazing singer and great performer - that is a rare quality that most current "singers" do not have.

The producer squashed her vocals. They didn't show case her ability well. I bet she has a big voice underneath the compression
@@r3aper3175 it was a stylistic choice for this track. Makes the chorus pop. I do think it was used too much though… if it was my track to produce I would have only used it on the 1st verse.

@@naypomjack6459 All I know is Mark Ronson produced this when he was about 20, man's a prodigy. I never understood how this woman and this song flew under the mainstream radar. Way before Amy Winehouse. Makes me want to go clubbing every time I hear it.

MrBarf, not to be a music snob, but this song wasn't ahead of its time when it came out. It was actually considered a work of nostalgia for an earlier period in time.
You'll probably enjoy more music from that period. Try Anita Ward 'Ring My Bell'.

I heard this song on TV for the first time 20 years ago. The hook beat was superb. Just last night I learned while watching a show on the evolution of music, that this was Mark Ronson's first work. Bravo to both.

Sad to say, but it's probably because she didn't break out until she was about 30, and the music industry in the early 2000s was hyper-focused on hot young solo artists. It's honestly impressive that she got as big as she did in a sea of barely-legal Britneys at the time.
No worries...true talent wins out. She had a huge following overseas.

Jlo was probably the only woman in the late 90s and early 2000s who made it while being older then her pears who happened to be in their late teens and early 20s... she was about to turn 30 when she debuted her first single. Before her, only Cindy Lauper at 31 and after that... honestly nobody that big or at least I don't remember anyone else's.

Me and my aunt used to KILLLLL this album when it came out. We were so obsessed with this video, I remember us painfully streaming it over our shitty dial up connection.
In the early aughts, on the rise of trash pop there was a true diamond who was hot as hell and made everything her way! The whole album is outstanding! It sounds totally timeless! And Nikka...gosh, she's a HUGE ARTIST! And she's amazingly beautiful! And she's also one of a kind person!!! I feel absolutely euphoric about this woman! I'd love to see more interviews with her, and more lives!
Only today i found the Nikka's Box and i just can't stop, won't stop watching the "bus version" of this song and the intimate version of the gorgeous Just Because. I'm in heaven🤗
