Hello Beautiful People! Happy Year of the Tiger! 🐯 I’m snowed in and loving every minute of it. Let’s close out the 80s together… the decade that influenced & helped define my taste in music for many years to come.
    💙
    1989…
    1. Prayers For Rain - The Cure - Road trip STL to NYC in the summer of ‘03 …. Nighttime Torrential downpour through the Endless tunnels of PA … Disintegration was one of the CDs that safely guided me forward amidst semis & sleepiness (my AOTY)
    2. Gun - Soundgarden (Spoonman is not my Soundgarden, this is. Superunknown came out when I was in high school, was everywhere, and just sounds too “clean”) His screams at the end of Gun though…my god(s). Intense. I want this band gritty & guttural.
    3. Round & Round - New Order (Another one… they just know how to do it for my synth-pop lovin’ self) and Technique - what a sublime album cover of a rainbow washed cherub! Makes me think of the deadly surface beauty of an oil slick.
    4. Kinda I Want To - NIN (anything from Pretty Hate Machine could’ve fit here)
    5. Cuts You Up - Peter Murphy
    6. Thieves - Ministry
    7. Zombie Eaters - Faith No More
    8. Monkey Gone To Heaven - Pixies
    9. Suggestion - Fugazi (went to see them with my high school boyfriend and I will always have a fondness for 13 Songs, memories of attempting to style his mohawk with egg whites, & no hooligan shenanigans or boot-stomps in this pit!)
    10. Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns - Mother Love Bone

1989 is fantastic year, honestly one of the best ever. Bumped a few of the songs from 1989 that charted in 90, because 90 isn't so great. So many great songs. the Honorable mentions list would probably make the Top 10 in most years.
    *Charting songs:*
*1. Runnin' Down a Dream (3) - Tom Petty* - my favorite Petty song. Love the riff.
*2. Closer to Fine -(7) Indigo Girls* - Lovely song deep sounding lyrics, and an amazing use of a penny whistle.
*3. I'll Be You (8) - Replacements* - Shocking to learn that the Replacements even had a Hot 100 song (this is their only one).
*4. Bust a Move (9) - Young MC* - Music at the end of the day is entertainment, and this song is so fun.
*5. Patience (10) - Guns N Roses*- From the hard rocking Appetite to this? Honestly fantastic use of acoustic guitars and a wonderful delicate vocal from Axl.
    *Non Charting songs*
*1. Elephant Stone (1) - Stone Roses* - Song of the Year. I actually like the shorter version (most people prefer the extended version) that was on the US version of their debut (not on Spotify, ugh). Absolutely mesmerizing. It's simultaneously beautiful, while also being different.
*2. I am the Resurrection (2) - Stone Roses* - Frankly I could put most of The Stone Roses debut on here, but I'll stop here. At over 8 minutes, this should be too long for me (I tend to not like long songs, especially ones without lyrics for a while), but this one is varied enough in the final 5 minutes to keep my interest.
*3. Madonna of the Wasps (4) - Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians* -A fantastic underrated song. Just lovely, and one that sound like it should have been a hit.
*4. Higher Ground (5) - Red Hot Chili Peppers* - My favorite song of theirs. Of course a cover of the Stevie Wonder song, but this song is filled with so much energy, it just makes stand up and jump around. I probably shouldn't do that though, I will hurt myself.
*5. Here Comes Your Man (6) - Pixies* - My favorite Pixies songs. Sounds like a great pop song, but just quirky enough for the Pixies.
    *Honorable Mentions:*
    11. Mersey Paradise - B-Side to She Bangs the Drums - would have made the list, but didn't want too much Stones Roses.
    12. Down In It - Nine Inc Nails
    13. Free Fallin - Tom Petty (for Jason)

Way to go Jason with picking Dylan’s “Most of the Time” as SOY 1989! Excellent choice from the great “Oh Mercy” album. Also the alternative version of this song on the Bootleg series “Tell Tall Tales”. An even better approach from the Master.

Special shout out to a couple of British bands I had listened to back in 89 but had mostly forgotten about until the past couple of weeks: the Godfathers and the Screaming Blue Messiahs. The Godfathers More Songs About Love and Hate, from 1989, I found especially good. Pretty straightforward rock and roll. If you like the Stones, or the Georgia Satellites. Or the Smithereens. Or that kind of thing. Gonna see if I can find a copy this weekend, so thx TLM guys for this series. Making me remember a lot of things I'd forgotten!

    1) Head On - The Jesus & Mary Chain (WC). Great mix of post-punk and early 60s rock with a super infectious chorus.
    2) Gouge Away - Pixies (WC). Kind of the blueprint for the quiet/loud grunge of the 90s, this is apparently Black Francis' retelling of the story of Samson from the Bible.
    3) Here Comes Your Man - Pixies (WC). The catchiest song about hobos of all time.
    4) Eye Know - De La Soul (WC). Samples of both Steely Dan's "Peg" and the whistling solo from "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay"? This is the kind of stuff that will have those Jennys lining up to want to hang out with you.
    5) Lovesong - The Cure (2). Another cool tune from everyone's favorite goths.
    6) Hey Ladies - Beastie Boys (36). Master class in sampling. Vincent Van Gogh go and mail that ear.
    7) So Alive - Love & Rockets (3). Cool tune that's like T.Rex for the 80s.
    8) Knock Me Down - Red Hot Chili Peppers (WC). I release I lose all of Jason's respect for this one, but that coda is so infectious. I don't care.
    9) I'll Be You - The Replacements (51). The 'Mats finally get some mainstream respect. Don't Tell a Soul is far from my favorite Replacements album, but this one's a banger.
    10) Pop Song 89 - R.E.M. (86). Apparently, the song is kind of a goof on the Doors' "Hello, I Love You". One of my favorite Peter Buck guitar riffs.
1989 is probably my favorite year in music. At least 3 of this year's album releases rank in my top 10 albums of all time. The Hot 100 was pretty great too.

    5. Faith No More - Epic (From Out of Nowhere was a competitor as well but this one simply lives up to its title.)

    3. Replacements - I'll Be You (My #1 Mats song.)
    2. Cure - Lovesong (For many Cure fans Disintegration is a untouchable master work but though I like the band, I prefer other albums. Still, this is a great song - and it is a good album, just not their best.)
    1. Alice Cooper - Poison (Like for most music lovers of my age, his great time was in the 70s when it was the band of this name and not just the singer. Anyway, he often had a little jewel on his competent-but-not-great later day albums and this may be the best of them.)

Whatever my song of the year is, it’s probably from Doolittle or The Stone Roses (both those albums made not only my top 2 of the year, but also my overall top 100 list). I go back and forth on which song is my favorite, but currently it might be “Waterfall” from TSR. I’ve definitely been in a “She Bangs the Drums” phase though. My Doolittle favorite right now I agree with Jason might be “Here Comes Your Man”, but “Hey” is way up there as well (I’ll vote for that in the poll), as is “Monkey Gone To Heaven” and “Debaser”.
    A few other big favorites:
    The Cure - “Fascination Street”
De La Soul - “Eye Know”
Faith No More - any of the first 4 songs on The Real Thing… probably “Epic” if I had to pick one
Beastie Boys - “The Sounds of Science”
    Camper Van Beethoven - “Sweethearts”
Nine Inch Nails - “Something I Can Never Have”
    King’s X - “Pleiades”
    Tom Petty - “Free Fallin’”
Also, great call on “This One’s For The Children” as Jason’s worst song. Since I once heard the first 4 New Kids on the Block albums as a kid, I revisited them last year during my 80’s/early 90’s album deep dive, and Merry Merry Xmas was definitely the most horrifying of those. One of my rare 1 star albums.

    1. Mekons-Memphis, Egypt. "Destroy your safe and happy lives before it is too late..."
    2. Kirsty MacColl-Mother's Ruin. Kite is one of the great, unknown albums (to U.S. audiences) of the 80's. Smiths fans should know it because Johnny Marr plays on the bulk of it and co-wrote two songs. MacColl was a great talent.
    3. Mekons-Club Mekon
    4. Grant Hart-2541
    5. Bob Mould-Wishing Well.
    6. Scrawl-Rot
    7. Spacemen 3-So Hot (Wash Away All Of My Tears)

    BILLBOARD
    1. *Lovesong by The Cure #2* (What a track to be their big stateside hit. I just adore that prominent organ sound on the verses.)
    2. *Lullaby by The Cure #74* (Creepy, melodic gothic rock.)
    3. *Handle With Care by The Traveling Wilburys #63* (Incredibly catchy roots rock. Great use of the stacked talent involved.)
    4. *Like a Prayer by Madonna #1* (Irresistible blend of art and dance pop. Gotta love Prince on guitar too, though I have to say that the Immaculate version is my favorite.)
    5. *One by Metallica #35* (Nailing the metal ballad again with chill acoustic moments to go along with the head banging.)
    WILDCARD
    1. WINNER: *I Wanna Be Adored by The Stone Roses* (The rather authoritative and atmospheric opening in what I'd consider a masterpiece of a record.)
    2. *All the Way by New Order* (Realizing they've had a standout track for me almost yearly throughout the 80s. This might be one of their greatest blends of song and production.)
    3. *Here Comes Your Man by Pixies* (At their absolute catchiest and most accessible without sacrificing a thing. That surfy guitar is so fun.)
    4. *All I Want Is You by U2 #83* (It's like they took a traditional Irish folk song and turned it into a shimmering ballad in their trademark style. Great.)
    5. *Made of Stone by The Stone Roses* (I actually forget how good this one is until I hear it again. It's like British Invasion filtered through hazy alt rock.)
I really enjoyed the selection this year. Ending a truly fun decade on a great note. Billboard isn't going to go back to what it was, but it's not a struggle just yet.
Worst TOP 40: Me So Horny by The 2 Live Crew #26 (Dang, there were some really terrible contenders this year. If you can handle the title being uttered repeatedly with "Me love you long time" throughout, you've got the lamest of hip hop to look forward to from there.)
    Worst Runner Up:
Hangin' Tough by New Kids on the Block #1
I'll Be Loving You (Forever) by New Kids on the Block #1

    1989:
    Billboard:
Metallica - One (Came out in '88 but surprised that it charted this year so it lands here. Fantastic build, disturbing lyrics, filthy guitar solo at the end, iconic machine-gun snare parts, total classic.)
The Cure - Lullaby (Two picks from Disintegration land on my Billboard list. The first features a haunting guitar line, punchy bass, and fake synth strings that somehow don't sound cheesy. Gotta love it!)
The Cure - Fascination Street (Surprised this one charted! The hardest rocking tune of Disintegration, with a sick bass line.)
Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation 1814 (My favourite off of Rhythm Nation 1814. Great progression of the New Jack sound she started on Control but with a much harder edge, knocking snares, and gang vocals on the hook that hint towards the choruses of tons of 90's rap bangers.)
Madonna - Like a Prayer (One of her best singles. There's a definite trend in late 80's pop of throwing in a gospel choir to make it sound more epic, and this is the best implementation of that trope.)
    Wild Card:
Blue Nile - The Downtown Lights (Immaculately produced sophisti-pop right here. The perfect track for a late night drive back home in a cab after a night of casual drinks with friends while you look out the window at the neon lights whizzing by.)
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus (Charted in '90 but sticking it here. No other song has ever managed to capture its cowboy-synth-punk style. Sexy lyrics too.)
Stone Roses - Fool's Gold (Dance-rock classic. Slinky guitar line combined with a break beat that never stops leads to an essential track in the Madchester canon.)
808 State - Pacific (Pretty much the peak of acid-house music. What other song starts with loon calls!)
Worst: Milli Vanilli - Girl You Know It's True (The worst of late 80's house and hip-hop rolled into one. Depressing that their producers could've chosen anyone for them to lip sync to and they chose guys who can barely rap at all. Dreadful.)
Best: Chris Isaak - Wicked Game (A shame that he's seen as a one-hit wonder since he has several great albums, but at least his one big hit is one of his best tunes. Endlessly sexy, especially on the hook with his falsetto.)

    Another Day : Galaxie 500
Romeo had Juliet : Lou Reed
Love and Anger : Kate Bush
Heads are Dancing : Kate Bush (have to have two from the amazing Sensual World album)
    Debaser : Pixies
    Fascination Street : The Cure
Rockin' in the Free World : Neil Young
Race the Sun : Pere Ubu
I am the Ressurection : Stone Roses
    Head On : JAMC
Closer to Fine : Indigo Girls
Series of Dreams : Bob Dylan
I voted for Stone Roses but it was a close call with the Pixies in the mix and I also love Oh Mercy so a tough choice. Usually it's a lot easier. Great picks guys!

    1. The Stone Roses - This Is the One
    2. Tom Petty - I Won't Back Down
    3. Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
    4. The Cure - Disintegration
    5. Bob Dylan - Series of Dreams
    6. Elvis Costello - Veronica
    7. Neil Young - Rockin' in the Free World
    8. The Rolling Stones - Mixed Emotions
    9. Fugazi - Promises
    10. Van Morrison - Coney Island
I limited my picks to one song per artist, because otherwise the list would be like half Stone Roses and the rest from Tom Petty, Pixies and The Cure. I don't know if it's cheating to put "Series of Dreams" on the list, but it was recorded in 1989 and I just think it's so much better than everything else on Oh Mercy. "You Got It" was a great pick from Jason, and it could probably make it into my top 10 as well If I were to redo it.

1989 is a very strong year for songs, that’s why I have a lot of Honourable Mentions.
(Honourable Mentions: Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love, Roxette - The Look, Billy Joel - We Didn’t Start the Fire, Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus, Holly Johnson - Americanos, Debbie Gibson - Over the Wall)
    Charting Songs:
    5. Simple Minds - Belfast Child (UK #1, Germany #3)
    4. Camouflage - Love is A Shield (Germany #9) [If you like Depeche Mode, you will love this song.]
    3. Madonna - Cherish (US #2, UK #3, Germany #16)
    2. The Bangles - Eternal Flame (US #1, UK #1, Germany #4)
    1. The Cure - Lullaby (Germany #3, UK #5, US #74) [A genius song with an outstanding vocal performance!]
    Wildcards:
    5. Nanci Griffith - Listen to the Radio [With this one, I feel like Joe felt with 'Love, in Itself'. I can't get the chorus out of my head.]
    4. Madonna - Pray for Spanish Eyes [A very authentic vocal delivery on this one. Maybe her best vocal performance.]
    3. Eurythmics - Sylvia [Now my favorite Eurythmics song. Very unique, a gothic ‘Eleanor Rigby’.]
    2. The Cure - Pictures of You [My favorite Cure song atm. Full of beautiful melodies and heartbreaking vocals/lyrics.]
SONG OF THE YEAR 1989: Madonna - Dear Jessie [A fantastic song. This song has something to it that I haven’t understood yet. But I know it’s very special.]

If ‘87 was possibly my favourite year for albums, then 1989 has got to be one of the best for songs:
    Billboard Top 100:
    Like A Prayer - Madonna
    Janie’s Got A Gun - Aerosmith
    Lovesong - The Cure
Runnin’ Down A Dream - Tom Petty
    Wildcards:
Have I Told You Lately? - Van Morrison
Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
The Sensual World - Kate Bush
Let Love Rule - Lenny Kravitz
Worst song: Girl You Know It’s True - Milli Vanilli
(Any song by these fraudsters is a contender for this award. I have chosen this one because it was their biggest seller and therefore made most money under false pretences)
Song of the Year: Sowing The Seeds Of Love - Tears For Fears
(Of course it’s heavily influenced by The Beatles but that’s no bad thing. I’m sure that the Fab Four would have been proud to have created this musical masterpiece)
I normally limit myself to 10 Honourable Mentions (5 Billboard and 5 Wildcards) but that has been doubled just for this year because it was so stacked with great songs:
    HMs - Billboard:
You Got It - Roy Orbison
    The Look - Roxette
When I See You Smile - Bad English
    Cuddly Toy - Roachford
    Fire Woman - The Cult
Rooms On Fire - Stevie Nicks
    Eternal Flame - Bangles
    Jackie Brown - John Mellencamp
The Living Years - Mike & The Mechanics
    Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
    HMs - Wildcards:
The Road To Hell - Chris Rea
    You’re Gone - Del Amitri
    Crossfire - Stevie Ray Vaughan
    The Pass - Rush
    I Don’t Want A Lover - Texas
    Fools Gold - Stone Roses
    Dry County - B-52’s
Soul Crying Out - Simple Minds
Rockin’ In The Free World - Neil Young
    Pacific 202 - 808 State

I will be surprised if it wasn’t one of your favourites too because I know you are a big Tom Petty fan.
Strangely, this year has been the only time Tears For Fears have made my list - they are a member of the growing number of artists that have won a SOTY award but not made my top 10 again. I’m sure there will be several more before this series finishes.

@@NaughtyVampireGod Hey Naughty, you have some great choices and some unexpected ones as always. I listened to Automatic by J&MC for the first time this week. Although they didn’t make my list, it was a good album and will certainly grow on me after a few listens. I would probably agree with your choice of Coast To Coast as the standout track.
I see you also avoided picking Love Shack by the B-52’s; that’s a song that I have heard too many times, so there are several other songs on Cosmic Thing I prefer to hear.
Unfortunately I have been put off listening to The Pogues music in the past because of Shane McGowan’s voice, much like I have with Tom Waits. I know they are great songwriters but I find it difficult to deal with their very distinctive vocal styles.

Hey Bryan - Thanks for the comments.
I appreciate the fact that you took time to give Automatic a listen. Good to hear that it's a possible grower for you! (Their '92 & '94 albums are also great.) It's also nice that we agree on Coast to Coast being the best song on the record. For some reason it doesn't get as much attention as Head On - which is a fantastic song, but it's the propulsive effect of Coast to Coast which sets it above the others, imo. On a sidenote, during my latest listen it occured to me that the short concluding song - Sunray - anticipates the techo sound of the following decade.
Yep - at this point in time i am burnt out on Love Shack - still a good song, though. Roam holds up better over time as do a number of the deep cuts on Cosmic THing.
The Pogues . . . for me the three albums from 1988-1990 are their pinacle, and i thought they'd land a place in my top 10 by now but that wasn't to be (yet - at least - there's one song in particular on Hells' Ditch which will likely make it). I agree w your comments on Shane's voice - the "drunkard slur" would be a way to describe it - whether or not he was actually drunk at the time he was recorded. Generally I can live with that however - as in the case of Tom Waits - sometimes it can be too much. (Also agree that both guys are terrific songwriters.)
So, how's 1990 looking? it's another big album year for me. You like Inspiral Carpets? Their 1990 debut is my AOTY. I guess Britpop really begins now. How about Bowie week? I cannot do a full discography but I am trying to get out a list of top 10 songs. I'm a big Bowie fan up to the early 80's. (Some ok stuff after that . . )
Ok, Bryan. Once again thanks for your comments. As always I am looking forward to your lists and reviews. Take care, my friiend!
