Just thought I’d mention how glad I was to see The Jam included on Kramzer’s list and I understand how aware the guys are , of some of the commenters ( like myself ) who have been flying the flag for that band the last few years( meaning the last few "Songs of the Year" videos) ….having said that , I’m cool that the Jam were primarily a British phenomenon and maybe don’t appeal to traditional American rock tastes ( and being a teenager in the early 80s I gravitated more to the British pop/ rock scene rather than the US)..(and this is not to offend the many devoted American Jam fans)…what I’m saying is we should be cool if (some of) our (mostly british) post punk/ new wave/ punk favourites aren’t in this channel’s wheel house or may not be to the taste of Jason/ Joe and Kramzer .. I’m learning a lot about great American pop / rock and classic rock (that i thought i knew ,but didn't…in this “community “you can safely appreciate the Carpenters as much as you might do Wire )from the Listography ( can I still say that ? 😊) gang ( and the commenters) and don’t really expect them to agree to like my personal little "cult "faves etc ( if they do, cool...if not , doesn't matter) .. I love that the channel ( and again , the commenters who have also informed me on some great music ) have their own opinions and views on the music scene of that time , which may not reflect mine.... and aren’t swayed / pressured by their fans …Don’t know if any of that made sense.. You are probably the only person to know the title of a King Sunny Ade song...I know the 1982 album but cannot really tell the individual tunes apart. I saw him live in Germany in 1983, the legendary Rockpalast performance - he had the whole audience under a spell in no time since almost nobody had heard such music before.

Love My Way - The Psychedelic Furs - a great lovely catchy downbeat tale of hard love that includes lines like " "There's an army on the dance floor it's fashion with a gun my love (recalling Nazis?) and there's emptiness behind their eyes, there's dust in all their hearts (more dust than Kansas imagined); they just want to steal us all and tear us all apart. But not in Love My Way, it's a new road; I follow where my mind goes. Todd Rundgren produced this record of the MTV video Richard goes mad like a Klaus Kinski scene from Herzog " Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) about a power hungry madman (Kinski in real life to). Love my Way is an affectionate, creepy, haunting video will stop your world and melt with you I made a pilgrimage to save this human's race never comprehending the race had long gone by. Another fine song from 1982 by Modern English.
With an ability to be as brooding as other Post Punk bands or as cheerfully infections as other New Wave groups (please , not Katrina and the Wave (a catchy bouncy song that is not new wave), the Psychedelic Furs were actually quite well rounded and deserve better than to be primarily known as the “Pretty in Pink” band. I used to hate "Africa", but it started to grow on me the last 10 years or so. It's still a bit awkward lyrically, but musically, it's a pretty interesting song. That and "Temptation" were near misses for me.
Take a Chance With Me and While My Heart Is Still Beating are highlights off a great album Africa is definitely one of the most popular songs of the year. I think Down Under is as well.

It’s been a while since I posted on one of these. Do plan on going back and doing the earlier years that I missed. 1982 is a very good year, way better than 1981, but not as good as the next couple of years. For that reason I’m pulling a Joe and putting my song of the year on this list, instead of ‘83 when it was released as a single. Singles: *1. 1999 - Prince -* One of those times where the single version is way better than the album version which is too long and has that weird intro. One of if not the greatest synth piece, ever. *2. Back on the Chain Gang - Pretenders -* Written of course for James Honeyman-Scott but is really universal for anybody dealing with loss. A timeless work with a lovely guitar figure. *3. Hurts So Good - John Cougar Mellencamp -* The verses are rather pedestrian but that chorus is fantastic and whatever chord they hit on “love” weirdly really makes the song for me. *4. You Got Lucky - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -* I think the synth gives it a bit dated feeling (though strangely, doesn’t seem to apply to Prince), but Tom is at his nasty best here. *5. I Melt With You - Modern English -* Surprised this only made it to 78 on the Hot 100. I oddly love the drums on this one especially the double crash. Non-Singles: *1. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson -* Song of the Year. Yeah it didn’t come out as a single till 1983 (January 3) but of course Thriller the album came out at the end of 1982. An absolute masterpiece and one of the finest vocals ever. The amount of emotion delivered in the line “his eyes were like mine” is astounding. One of my top 15 songs of all time. *2. Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen -* the catchiest song on Nebraska, but still bleak as hell. A great vocal from Bruce (whom like Todd only needs a first name). *3. Highway Patrolmen - Bruce Springsteen -* But Bruce goes even bleaker. I think one of Bruce’s most underrated songs. *4. Walking on a Wire - Richard and Linda Thompson -* a sort of obscure but beautiful track. Linda Thompson has a lovely voice on this ballad from one of the best divorce albums ever. *5. Never Say Never - Romeo Void -* A fantastic groove, and singer Deborah Iyall delivers the lyrics with some incredible badassery. Great video as always. Looking very much forward to 1983.

HMs - had to leave out songs by Stray Cats, Culture Club, Soft Cell, Kool and the Gang, Hall and Oates, the Motels, the Waitresses, Tom Tom Club, Robyn Hitchcock, INXS (next year though), Mission of Burma, the Gun Club, and the Jam. Another strong year.

@@afermata949 Actually...I did a little research and there was a A side single release of The Passenger in 1982. Back in 1977 it was only released as a B-side (for Success). Most likely that is the edition you have.

I was struggling btwn that and the McCarthney song for a while. Broadsword another near miss for the top 10. And Berlin managed to get a song in the top 10 for each of their 3 80's albums, Thx for taking the time to check them out and letting me know.

You have made an excellent choice for your SOTY - I was torn between Avalon and More Than This for my Roxy selection. A pattern is emerging. Like last year, I barely scraped together a Hot 100 top 5, and had to turn away the teeming masses of wildcard songs. 1982 Billboard Hot 100 Charts 1. Since You're Gone - The Cars - My favorite track from the Cars. 2. Cat People - David Bowie and Giorgio Moroder - Best version of this song. Revived by Quentin Tarantino, it actually works better in his movie than in Cat People. 3. Should I Stay or Should I Go - The Clash - Not close to my favorite, but a great tune anyway. 4. Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners - Pure pop perfection. I first heard of this band through reading an album review. I went out and bought the vinyl, and it was nothing like I expected. Mostly not good, but one stellar winning track kept it from being a total loss. 5. Tainted Love - Soft Cell - Great tune for the clubs. 1982 Wildcards 1. Man's Best Friend/Loopzilla - George Clinton - Funkiest. Track. Ever. 2. Atomic Dog - George Clinton - If there was a soundtrack to my life, this song would play every time I entered a room. 3. I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby - Kid Creole and the Coconuts - So much sass. So much attitude. Just fun. 4. DMSR - Prince - Possibly my favorite Prince track. 5. Never Say Never - Romeo Void - This song has grown on me over the years. 6. Let's Pretend We're Married - Prince - Second favorite Prince track. 7. Telegraph Road - Dire Straits - Guitar symphony. 8. A Slow Song - Joe Jackson - Over the top ballad that makes the album special. 9. Mesopotamia - B-52s - Weird, David Byrne production that failed commercially, but works for me. 10. Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy - Kid Creole and the Coconuts Song of the Year: Man's Best Friend/Loopzilla Unable to record as Parliament or Funkadelic due to legal proceedings, George Clinton's first solo album is a banger with the two top songs of the year. I’d probably go with “Beat It” by Michael Jackson for my SOTY (Thriller was also my album of the year if we don’t count The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads - “Billie Jean” is also narrowly behind it). Other contenders: “Steppin’ Out” by Joe Jackson, “Cynical Girl” by Marshall Crenshaw, “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” by Prince (any of the first 4 songs on 1999 might do though - I voted “Little Red Corvette” in the poll), “Subdivisions” by Rush and “Senses Working Overtime” by XTC.
Not sure what the chart position was, but "I Melt With You" from Modern English is my top pick for that year. Was used to great effect in "Valley Girl" and it still sounds fresh to me after all these years. The humming towards the end takes it to the next level.

At this point it looks a though REM will get the SOTY which will give them 3 winners for the 80s (SOTY for 1984 is So. Central Rain, and 1987 is The One I Love). But . . still listening . . Dire Straits also have several great songs in 85. . . . No REM songs in 89 (like I said, I go by the "album rule"), but there's excellent albums by the Jesus and Mary Chain, The Smithereens, Pixies, The Pogues and more all in contention.

I spent almost all of 1982 in Germany and remember that well - Neue Deutsche Welle. I never understood a word even though I was pretty fluent in the language at that time, but singing and talking is somehow different and they used a lot of slang in the songs. I also saw Dexy's perform in a Munich beer hall around that time but it was before the second album was released even if they already played some of the new songs.

Nur Geträumt is by far my favorite Nena song, I will definitely buy the single one day. The only Ixi song I know is Knutschfleck, interestingly the only song by them available on Spotify,, actually three different versions of it, as if anyone needed those. Will have to check out Detlev on CZcams then.

This year was a super tough one to narrow down but I managed. I got "Little Red Corvette" in consideration next year but I've always loved it so it gets my vote but all picks are great. "Save It For Later" would be tempting if it wasn't up against LRC. 82 was the year my tastes started going from prog to new wave and Missing Persons was a big reason that happened. I was following Terri Bozzio since UK warmed up Jethro Tull on the Stormwatch tour. I saw Missing Persons live on their first US tour in an old movie theater, 10th row. Bozzio is 1 of rocks premiere drummers. Also perhaps my best warm up band experience was seeing INXS warm up Men at Work from my first front row concert seating. They blew Men away. I also saw that Utopia tour, not great seats, it was a day of choice and I was a little disappointed at the time he played no old solo stuff. Jason is usually the guy I relate to the least on his picks but for 82 he was on👍

Flock of Seagulls their biggest hit in the UK was much better for me than the two mentioned here, called Wishing. Prince's best single was probably When Doves Cry. Empty Garden is nice but Here Today made more of an impression on me. It's nice to see Blue Eyes getting a mention in the comments, always liked it. Take it Away is getting some mentions and it's much better for me than Goodnight Tonight.
Survivor's "Eye of The Tiger" which was a massive hit, topping both the US and UK charts. The demo version they used at the end of the Rocky 3 movie was also good.

“Never Too Late for Love” by Warren Zevon. Not only is it my favorite song of 1982, but it is probably in my top 5 songs of all-time. Words cannot express how powerful I think it is.
Anybody else notice the path Tainted Love took on the charts this year? Got as high as like 63 or something like that, fell down to 100, then recovered and climbed into the top ten. Didn't fall out of the hot 100 until its run was through. When I saw it at 100 I thought, "WTF? Wasn't it a top ten hit?" I found it fascinating. Yes, I am simple-minded and easily entertained. 🙄
In '80 Jason said next 2 years bad and I was thinking '81 last of the good years for me. We're both wrong as you reminded me of lots of great songs this year so I stole Love My Way, Back On The Chain Gang and Don't Change. Also totally agree with everything said about You Got Lucky, and absolutely love how vibe of video compliments track.

Just thought I’d mention how glad I was to see The Jam included on Kramzer’s list and I understand how aware the guys are , of some of the commenters ( like myself ) who have been flying the flag for that band the last few years( meaning the last few "Songs of the Year" videos) ….having said that , I’m cool that the Jam were primarily a British phenomenon and maybe don’t appeal to traditional American rock tastes ( and being a teenager in the early 80s I gravitated more to the British pop/ rock scene rather than the US)..(and this is not to offend the many devoted American Jam fans)…what I’m saying is we should be cool if (some of) our (mostly british) post punk/ new wave/ punk favourites aren’t in this channel’s wheel house or may not be to the taste of Jason/ Joe and Kramzer .. I’m learning a lot about great American pop / rock and classic rock (that i thought i knew ,but didn't…in this “community “you can safely appreciate the Carpenters as much as you might do Wire )from the Listography ( can I still say that ? 😊) gang ( and the commenters) and don’t really expect them to agree to like my personal little "cult "faves etc ( if they do, cool...if not , doesn't matter) .. I love that the channel ( and again , the commenters who have also informed me on some great music ) have their own opinions and views on the music scene of that time , which may not reflect mine....

You are probably the only person to know the title of a King Sunny Ade song...I know the 1982 album but cannot really tell the individual tunes apart. I saw him live in Germany in 1983, the legendary Rockpalast performance - he had the whole audience under a spell in no time since almost nobody had heard such music before.
1982 - a good year for songs, maybe not singles or albums
1. Love My Way - The Psychedelic Furs - a great lovely catchy downbeat tale of hard love that includes lines like " "There's an army on the dance floor it's fashion with a gun my love (recalling Nazis?) and there's emptiness behind their eyes, there's dust in all their hearts (more dust than Kansas imagined); they just want to steal us all and tear us all apart. But not in Love My Way, it's a new road; I follow where my mind goes.
Todd Rundgren produced this record of the MTV video Richard goes mad like a Klaus Kinski scene from Herzog " Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) about a power hungry madman (Kinski in real life to).
Love my Way is an affectionate, creepy, haunting video will stop your world and melt with you I made a pilgrimage to save this human's race never comprehending the race had long gone by. Another fine song from 1982 by Modern English.
With an ability to be as brooding as other Post Punk bands or as cheerfully infections as other New Wave groups (please , not Katrina and the Wave (a catchy bouncy song that is not new wave), the Psychedelic Furs were actually quite well rounded and deserve better than to be primarily known as the “Pretty in Pink” band. They should be in the Rock Hall of Fame. Todd made it, they should too.

I used to hate "Africa", but it started to grow on me the last 10 years or so. It's still a bit awkward lyrically, but musically, it's a pretty interesting song. That and "Temptation" were near misses for me.

It’s been a while since I posted on one of these. Do plan on going back and doing the earlier years that I missed. 1982 is a very good year, way better than 1981, but not as good as the next couple of years. For that reason I’m pulling a Joe and putting my song of the year on this list, instead of ‘83 when it was released as a single.
Singles:
*1. 1999 - Prince -* One of those times where the single version is way better than the album version which is too long and has that weird intro. One of if not the greatest synth piece, ever.
*2. Back on the Chain Gang - Pretenders -* Written of course for James Honeyman-Scott but is really universal for anybody dealing with loss. A timeless work with a lovely guitar figure.
*3. Hurts So Good - John Cougar Mellencamp -* The verses are rather pedestrian but that chorus is fantastic and whatever chord they hit on “love” weirdly really makes the song for me.
*4. You Got Lucky - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -* I think the synth gives it a bit dated feeling (though strangely, doesn’t seem to apply to Prince), but Tom is at his nasty best here.
*5. I Melt With You - Modern English -* Surprised this only made it to 78 on the Hot 100. I oddly love the drums on this one especially the double crash.
Non-Singles:
*1. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson -* Song of the Year. Yeah it didn’t come out as a single till 1983 (January 3) but of course Thriller the album came out at the end of 1982. An absolute masterpiece and one of the finest vocals ever. The amount of emotion delivered in the line “his eyes were like mine” is astounding. One of my top 15 songs of all time.
*2. Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen -* the catchiest song on Nebraska, but still bleak as hell. A great vocal from Bruce (whom like Todd only needs a first name).
*3. Highway Patrolmen - Bruce Springsteen -* But Bruce goes even bleaker. I think one of Bruce’s most underrated songs.
*4. Walking on a Wire - Richard and Linda Thompson -* a sort of obscure but beautiful track. Linda Thompson has a lovely voice on this ballad from one of the best divorce albums ever.
*5. Never Say Never - Romeo Void -* A fantastic groove, and singer Deborah Iyall delivers the lyrics with some incredible badassery.
Great video as always. Looking very much forward to 1983.

@@afermata949 Actually...I did a little research and there was a A side single release of The Passenger in 1982. Back in 1977 it was only released as a B-side (for Success). Most likely that is the edition you have.

2. Cat People - David Bowie and Giorgio Moroder - Best version of this song. Revived by Quentin Tarantino, it actually works better in his movie than in Cat People.

4. Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners - Pure pop perfection. I first heard of this band through reading an album review. I went out and bought the vinyl, and it was nothing like I expected. Mostly not good, but one stellar winning track kept it from being a total loss.

I’d probably go with “Beat It” by Michael Jackson for my SOTY (Thriller was also my album of the year if we don’t count The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads - “Billie Jean” is also narrowly behind it). Other contenders: “Steppin’ Out” by Joe Jackson, “Cynical Girl” by Marshall Crenshaw, “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” by Prince (any of the first 4 songs on 1999 might do though - I voted “Little Red Corvette” in the poll), “Subdivisions” by Rush and “Senses Working Overtime” by XTC.

Not sure what the chart position was, but "I Melt With You" from Modern English is my top pick for that year. Was used to great effect in "Valley Girl" and it still sounds fresh to me after all these years. The humming towards the end takes it to the next level.

At this point it looks a though REM will get the SOTY which will give them 3 winners for the 80s (SOTY for 1984 is So. Central Rain, and 1987 is The One I Love). But . . still listening . . Dire Straits also have several great songs in 85. . . . No REM songs in 89 (like I said, I go by the "album rule"), but there's excellent albums by the Jesus and Mary Chain, The Smithereens, Pixies, The Pogues and more all in contention.

I spent almost all of 1982 in Germany and remember that well - Neue Deutsche Welle. I never understood a word even though I was pretty fluent in the language at that time, but singing and talking is somehow different and they used a lot of slang in the songs.
I also saw Dexy's perform in a Munich beer hall around that time but it was before the second album was released even if they already played some of the new songs.

Nur Geträumt is by far my favorite Nena song, I will definitely buy the single one day. The only Ixi song I know is Knutschfleck, interestingly the only song by them available on Spotify,, actually three different versions of it, as if anyone needed those. Will have to check out Detlev on CZcams then.

One great new discovery to mention on the 1982 playlist- "Night of the Swallow" by Kate Bush. Exceptional tune. Love the mix of melodic and moody verses with the Irish folk sections. Oh yeah, in love with "Subdivisions" more than ever before and "Save It for Later" was a pretty great find too.

This year was a super tough one to narrow down but I managed. I got "Little Red Corvette" in consideration next year but I've always loved it so it gets my vote but all picks are great. "Save It For Later" would be tempting if it wasn't up against LRC.

82 was the year my tastes started going from prog to new wave and Missing Persons was a big reason that happened. I was following Terri Bozzio since UK warmed up Jethro Tull on the Stormwatch tour. I saw Missing Persons live on their first US tour in an old movie theater, 10th row. Bozzio is 1 of rocks premiere drummers.
Also perhaps my best warm up band experience was seeing INXS warm up Men at Work from my first front row concert seating. They blew Men away.
I also saw that Utopia tour, not great seats, it was a day of choice and I was a little disappointed at the time he played no old solo stuff.
Jason is usually the guy I relate to the least on his picks but for 82 he was on👍

Not only is it my favorite song of 1982, but it is probably in my top 5 songs of all-time. Words cannot express how powerful I think it is.
Anybody else notice the path Tainted Love took on the charts this year? Got as high as like 63 or something like that, fell down to 100, then recovered and climbed into the top ten. Didn't fall out of the hot 100 until its run was through. When I saw it at 100 I thought, "WTF? Wasn't it a top ten hit?" I found it fascinating. Yes, I am simple-minded and easily entertained. 🙄

In '80 Jason said next 2 years bad and I was thinking '81 last of the good years for me. We're both wrong as you reminded me of lots of great songs this year so I stole Love My Way, Back On The Chain Gang and Don't Change. Also totally agree with everything said about You Got Lucky, and absolutely love how vibe of video compliments track.
