  • Conditions in the Southern Ocean on Feb 3rd 2017 were at gale force. Having seen around 15 knots of boat speed down the sides of waves, it was time to deploy the series drogue.

    A very good practical video and no flashy stuff. Just plain hard sailing.

    Awesome! Love this! This video will save lives! Great to see the drogue in action. Looks like it did its job slowing down and stabilize the boat a fair bit

    15 days later he was knocked down, dismasted, had to scuttle the boat and was rescued at sea. Unbelievable

    Great footage given the circumstances. Retrieval of a JSD is why I am not sure if I want one yet. Thanks for sharing. Andy UK

    Thanks for the very useful video.

    Never deploy any drogue weight first (power mode). Always bridle first to flake out safely.

  • @claverton

    In hindsight, what can you do to prevent the windvane paddle getting caught in the drogue bridle? I have a Windpilot and with this windvane you can bring the paddle up out of the water and pointing upwards fairly simply, so I would expect doing this prior to deploying the drogue would prevent it getting fouled and the way to go ... not sure whether or not you can do this with the Fleming.

    • @shanefreeman1384
      @shanefreeman1384 Před 4 lety +3

      Thanks for the comment. Yes, that's exactly what I should have done...I have had a Windpiolot on another boat. They are similar. I should have lifted the Fleming paddle before deploying the drogue. It seems so obvious in hindsight and I kick myself on a daily basis for it not being so obvious at the time!!

    I was curious about the drogue,
    I'm only assuming you would shorten the sail to combat this, but as you sailing with the equivalent of a parking brake on, does this add stress to the mast? It's possibly a stupid question, but I've not actually ever sailed as yet, so I'm allowed to ask stupid questions.

    • @glenndavis479
      @glenndavis479 Před 2 lety +1

      I'd say there is more stress to the boat in general where the drogue bridle is attached than the mast. I've seen some bloody oversized bracket plates used just for the drogue attachment points.

  • @jhyacinth
    @jhyacinth Před 7 lety +2

    Can you explain need for wind vane steering after drogue set. Isn't your steering fully controlled by drogue after it's deployed, that is, stern will be held square to the following seas?

    • @shanefreeman8036
      @shanefreeman8036  Před 7 lety +2

      Safe Sailing ...you are right. No need to have the windvane engaged. I had disconnected the control lines to the windvane but should have raised the paddle and got the whole thing out of the way:) you can do this with the Fleming vane...not really with the Aries or some of the other vanes.

      Shane Freeman--After posting viewed more of your vids plus post on GGR. Devastated to read about need to abandon your vessel. Hoping that the spirit that propelled you to prepare for race propels you past this calamity and thru to the other side. Godspeed.

    One question. Can you not deploy the drogue from the bow. Thinking it would give you a better ride and away from your wind vane? Plus keep your stern from getting swamped. Or would it been unsafe?

    • @shanefreeman1384
      @shanefreeman1384 Před 5 lety +4

      Thanks Hugh for the interest. The drogue isnt really designed to be deployed as a sea anchor(off the bow). Probably could use it at a pinch if I had to, however I was wanting to continue to put miles under the keel (which the drogue enables...and brings control to a boat at risk of being pitch poled or rolled, because of excess speed down wave fronts). Really, I should have raised the windvane paddle before deploying the drogue...and got it out of harms way :)

    Thanks for vid Shane. Which I’d seen it before I deployed my JSD singlehanded! I also did a video but didn’t record the actual deployment as it was in the darkness and all a bit frantic. Anyway here’s the video if your interested. You’ll notice a lanyard I put on to try and stop the bridle going under my hydrovane rudder.

    • @lutzweb
      @lutzweb Před 2 lety

      agree with you, and the video shows all the risks of deploying 100m line and 12kg chain dragging the boat, new plaining hull can probably accelerate more and this become old fashion, however i think in that situation the skipper did a great job, and seems the situation with the drougue has improved a lot
