- Sure, it took 3 days to fully finish it and make it nice, but still... It was perfectly functional after just one. Check out Rick Marchand, the bladesmith who cranks out crazy high quality blades like it's nothing:

He ended up calling it "Nagi-Nada" because it's not quite a naginata (shorter & different type of blade), but close. Basically a glaive-like fantasy polearm with a pretty mean butt-spike. Cuts like a scalpel on a stick. :)
It was good fun to slice up some of my remaining tatami mats with it. Even with a pretty thick wooden core inside, the blade sailed right through.

Last time I came in this early, we were still making pommel jokes at the end of the last video
So last video ended rightly?
@@isaacm1929 damn right it did
Last time I came this early, my girlfriend sighed in disappointment
@@mikaj1462 But.. but.. BUT?! Did she end thou rightly?
Yo same
I would love to see a billhook, made by Rick, in action.
Also, the sounds of tatami mat cutting is satysfying.
That happened last year. czcams.com/video/SxN7zUigRzc/video.html
@@Skallagrim Ah, I forgot about that video. Great stuff.
That's what I call ASMR
L
@@giulyanoviniciussanssilva2947 yeah. He needs to just make an hour long video of tatami mat cutting. That or just do a compilation of all the tatami mats he has cut in the past which I guess would be a lot more budget friendly for him by reusing old content.
Rick is insanely talented, and a really nice guy too. Met him at his shop years ago..
@Apsoy Pike Paying for all the mats while everyone else gets to slice them up seems like a raw deal. Best get out of that
Did he "cut" you a deal?
@@ROCKYPLAYA No, even if he did I wouldn't have been able to afford anything back then lol
yeah a stick, 2 pointy ends, that good ...
Other blacksmiths: "we need a full team and several weeks to make a mediocre blade."
Rick: *casually crafts a godly blade in half a day*
He probably cast it in what was close to the final shape, so that there was only a small amount of forging that had to be done, which meant the remaining steps could start much sooner.
@@MogofWar He probably just ground it with a sanding belt.
You have no clue how absurdely challenging it is to reliably cast steel. At a small workshop? Forget it.
@@Seelenschmiede But he couldn't have simply forged it in such a short time-frame, unless the ingots were already in the correct shape... or, he already possessed steel at a calculated carbon content, and used an induction smelter... Such a proces can be downsized and what's a "small shop" is a relative term. I know making crucible steel can be downsized, maybe not quite garage or shed level but definitely to shop floor or barn sized and it's not like the equations for the formula haven't been exhaustively solved for centuries. I know I WOULD end up making some useless pig-iron slightly, but what I would produce, and what a master of the craft is going to produced are two different things entirely... I'm not going to say this guy's a master of the craft, but I'm FAR LESS LIKELY to say he's not one. That and we don't know how many times he failed, but I suspect that if he failed between a dozen and a hundred times, that his next few dozen attempts will all succeed, but I actually doubt he took 100 tries to succeed in fact there is a subtle clue in this very video that he not only cast his own crucible steel formulation, but that he downsized the process, how he did it, and that this is most likely his first try... And it's the inordinately long tangs on both major steel components.... The tangs were metal from the casting channels... so he might have used a pig-iron casting method or he might have used rhe crucible method but poured into a funneled channel. (If it was a vertical mould, with the blade part at the bottom, the casting channel leading to it, and a "bowl" to feed the casting channel at the top, both parts might have been made in a single cast with the excess in the bowl being used to forge the pommel, as you notice it appears the pommel is tanged in and cannot unscrew.) Of course that's speculative but seriously this is well within the realm of plausibility. Someone who knows the math will succeed after a few tries. A master of the craft will succeed after a few tries. A master of the craft who knows the math will probably succeed on the first try, although that first success might be a bit awkward... such as the artifact featured in this video...
@@MogofWar Good sir, I must implore you to reevaluate your assessment. It is quite difficult to liquify steel, let alone cast it reliably, so much so that no smith worth their salt would bother doing it. Hence your correct assumption that he used premade steel, likely cut from a large sheet. Furthermore the long tangs are not indicative of a casting process, but rather an intentional design meant to strengthen the overall build.
Damn, that's what I call utilitarian. No excessive proportions, not too long, while still having ample blade length and leverage/reach to be effective.
Honestly could imagine something like this being a real historical weapon.
I just LOVE how no-nonsense this design is and how damn well it works. Big props to Rick! Looking forward to see more of his stuff on the channel.
Yea, absolutely no nonsense! The short, sharpened blade at the end of the pole is totally functional and no danger for the wielder of this weapon at all.
i mean the pommel end mind need a good sheth to not stab yourself, but else look functional
@@mementomori4972 is that meant to be sarcasm? It's a weapon, by that logic even a car is nonsensical since you can easily run someone over lol.
@@nahuelmat to be fair to my untrained eyes it looks pretty possible for your hands to slip down there, maybe it should have another sort of guard?
This reminds me of a couple of swords I re-ground and sharpened for a buddy a while back. One was WAY too tip-heavy and had a really fat cross section. I spent a couple hours hogging off material and taking the edge to a very fine finish and it was a totally different weapon. Cut tatami exactly the same way, like a lightsaber. 5% effort and it slid through, and the balance went from crowbar to graceful. What a pleasure to make things work.
"from crowbar to graceful" I'm remembering that one. I'll be able to use that phrase somewhere... eventually.. I think. XD
Reaaally love to see that ring holding all the wood and metal together there under the guard. Absolute must.
Thank you… ferrules are so important. They are often overlooked.
I was drinking something and about halfway through this Skall said “what the fuck” in such a way that I nearly choked on my drink. Haha.
This was a good one. 😂
Sounds like the beat drop of a dubstep song I've heard a lot in the past but forgot the name
I could watch these cutting tests all day. It's just so satisfying.
Agreed. I love these videos.
We need to get Skal back into the 200k a video range so he can afford tatami
That would be called a Konaginata, from what i know there were exemplars of this size. Do you think that it would cut better if the blade was the same size of the handle?
maybe, it would be a bit similar to a nagamaki
@@pedrosabino6721 yeah ,i was poking at that, since last time Skall was stumped by the nagamaki, maybe after this found a way to use it.
Why not just call it "Glaive"?
@@junichiroyamashita If I remember correctly, his issue with the nagamaki was the curved handle, which this here does not have.
i think the proportion are closer to a pudao
but with a Japanese style blade/tsuba combo and a spike at the end instead of a ring
I need that sickle and that spear sword machete for my farm. Those look like functional tools. I could really use them.
Its called a glaive or glave, both are used. :)
@@homesteadlegion4419 i think this thing is more like naginata
@Lalli
The blade/shaft ratio and blade shape are a bit off for that, naginatas have really long blades that a usually curved as whole, and yeah the lenght overall is to short to be anything, but its blade is closer to a glaive then a naginata, that being said he clearly styled the decorations like one.
In the end is doesnt matter much either since a naginata is a glaive in essence just like a katana is a sword.
@@lalli8152 I think this is what's called a sword spear
The Naginata is just the Japanese version of a glaive.
That long handle machete thing seems like it would be a great farm tool, right up there with the billhook for functionality.
(And we all know billhooks make wicked weapons)
Let me introduce a tool that will revolutionize your farming life! Introducing, the Nota-Pen-Is!
Sword spear
It's called a Glaive. Essentially, a heavy duty saber blade with an extra long handle.
Cold Steel makes a whole bunch of two-handed (long grip) machetes. The reviews are positive.
You can also look up the Panabas from the Philippines, which was featured in season 4 of Forged in Fire. It's presented as a weapon, but its origin and common use is as an agricultural tool. And, yes, that thing cuts very effectively.
So your idea is quite valid.
@@jonathanchark5291 Yeah but glaives tend to be, well, polearm length. This is basically sword length.
Shorter than most Great/Dane axes.
Interesting finding a YT channel that is so big and successful doing the things I used to do in my backyard as a kid :)
Started with water bottles, and such could not afford the proper tatami mats, so found rolled up newspaper was a good substitute.
Man, seeing Skal get all these cool weapons just makes me super jelly...
This man could arm a small army in no times basically
My friend bought a wooden weapon very similar to this thing at a Renaissance fair last summer. It was probably supposed to be a child-sized glaive or spear, but we both agreed that it was an interesting piece of work in its own right.
Man, I'd love to see Rick's take on the fantasy style scythe (The typical r shaped kind rather than the more effective war scythe style)
if he can make Death's Scythe from Dante's Inferno, i'll be VERY impressed.
For context, that thing is made out of what seems to be a giant human spine that can become rigid or flexible at will, and a blade that has cogwheel-like parts at the head so that it can ratchet into a proper polearm-like war scyte shape at a moment's notice.
@@jurtheorc8117 The only way I see that being possible is as a wall hanger, no way to make that thing plausible to use... Granted, it's been ages since I played Dante's Inferno, but back then even I went "Nope, not without magic to make it work", and that's before I saw the attack animations, which firmly planted it in the "Not without magic" clause of it to me
If you make the point like just putting a viking sword on the side then making the up blade curve it would be good for fighting.i mean just for normal syths.
Base it off the Chinese polearm translated as Dagger Axe, AKA the Ji.
(The one that looks like a dagger, not the crescant blade axe)
I love that you can just hear the sound of a clean cut from the sickle.
Honestly, (this is not a knock against any other content you make) I could just watch cutting video after cutting video. It is just extremely satisfying to watch and I enjoy it greatly. Also now that I think about it I also thoroughly enjoy the sparring and experimentation videos too!
To be completely honest, I believe any quality blacksmith with access to modern equipment should be able to knock out a decent blade in one day, it’s the hafting on TOP of that that makes it impressive fr
Yes the final finishing and fitting is where the majority of the work is. Don’t get me wrong… it took me 18+ years to get to the point where I can make a proper blade in one day. … and I would normally work at that speed. This was a last minute inspiration for Skallagrim’s next day visit.
If there was ever such thing as a ko-naginata this is what I imagine it would look like
That last sword has a nice "hum" sound after the swing a few times. And yes, one day for a weapon like that is insane.
AWESOME! To be fair, though, you make it look easier than it is. That slo-mo was intense, with the consecutive strikes. Damn. 💛💛💛that.
Thank you for introducing us to his work!
I too think it's very impressive. Such craftmanship is worthy of respect.
Beautiful craftsmanship, excellent performance. 11/10 I want one now
That Sickle action was pretty sick, man!
5:17 that little ;vzzzing' the blade give off after that cut is just 'hisses fingers'
I love the design of that weapon and it cuts like a beast, love to get my hands on one of those.
Props to the man's craftmanship. Cheff's kiss.
Looks like a shorter version of a naginata. also a shorter blade. but that cutting power is Insane!
i use to be on Bladeforum and use to follow ricks progress for years! glad to see he is still going strong
This thing looks so much fun to use! Great video as usual Skall!
I’ve been eyeing his pieces for years, so cool to see you guys collab
.....👆i got something special for you🎁🎁🎁..
Beautiful! Such a nice length 👌🏿
A Naginata? Cool!
"It will keeeeell"
Honestly those cuts that cleanly slice the corner of the bottle shows how well the blade was made
This video is so fun to watch! Thank you for making it! I do miss the skull though. Rick is a talented weapon maker! It shows! Also, thank you for the part with the sickle!. :)
Beautiful work work. Even when rough. Nicely done Rick.
.....👆i got something special for you🎁🎁🎁..
Love you skall,i haven't watched in a while but I still love your videos
What a skilled bladesmith! I wish he could make those to-order, I'd love to have one of those.
Well, I know where I'm getting my next blade from. The images of the finished glaive look so beautiful. I like that. Aesthetics *and* functionality, rather than one or the other. Better start saving up then.
This is what I live for, watching beautiful blades cut everything perfectly
I really like this weapon type; the 'pole-sword'.
Also, the pictures of that weapon in its completed state has a rustic beauty which I very much enjoy.
strangely cathartic watching those mats being cut, good to see more good smiths working also.
looks gorgeous
wow! ready to load up all my blades and get Rick to sharpen them.... that was a fun vid to watch
thats amazing!
good work!
Beautiful!
Damn I love minimalist designs. Lovely weapon, seems a pleasure to swing
The sharpness showing the true meaning of No Effort November. Those were gorgeous.
At 5:18, the ringing of that blade after that strike is heavenly.
I was thinking about tatami mat substitutes after your community post the other day. What about the smallest branches/boughs of a soft evergreen tree like cedar or hemlock bundled up like a big smudge stick? The only downsides I foresee are getting sap on your weapons and the time invested to gather/prepare materials. Even with the cost of solvent to clean your blades, it still might be worth the effort to save money on those tatami mats.
I love how much fun you're obviously having in this one, goofing around, only giving 15% and stuff :D
so I have been working on some design for a story I've been working on and the the MC's weapon is much like the main one in this video. Kinda cool seeing something close to it being used and working so well
That is most certainly very high quality workmanship.
I really like that sword staff, it looked really cool.
Now I want to see it in a fantasy movie/show.
"Started at 9am, done at 2pm" is definitely a flex.
I've always advocated that shorter polearms were under explored in their potential. That's an interesting weapon design for sure.
I don't know how common they were, but I know that there was a version of the European poleax that was about longsword length. You see them depicted art with the butt on the ground and the head about hip hight.
Its about convenience vs effectiveness. A polearm is gonna be a pain to carry around, so if you're gonna do it, it might as well be a long one to get you that reach advantage.
i think the issue with small pole arm is unlike a sword you lack the cross guard to protect your hands and it lack the reach advantage from normal polearms.
@@Marveryn the weapon in the video appears to be only slightly shorter than the shortest quarterstaves. I'm not disagreeing, you raise a good point, but I think it could be managed.
yeah am just saying compare to a sword that protech your hands with the guard, the reason we don't see historical that size of weapon often is perhaps the lack of hand protection especially since for the most part they are swinging it with both hand. One hand is always out in front in the middle of the haft. but man is that blade sharp. it sort of remind me of a war scythe
That was fun! Kudos to Rick! Now combine them and make a polearm sickle! 😝 Or would that qualify as a type of scythe then
Glaives are criminally underrated, Great stuff!
Do you film several videos in 1 day? Also if you happen to see this I've been watching you for many years. I hope you're doing well mentally and if you're struggling still I hope you can get back on the right track! I speak for us all when I say your fans really care about you. Sorry if this seems out of place or random, I just recently rewatched some of your ADDventures. Love that channel btw.
That thing is awesome!
One of the most satisfying cutting videos.
That is one hell of a fighting spear! And that Gross Messer looked awesome!
.....👆i got something special for you🎁🎁🎁..
That’s a beautiful weapon. Its like a naginata but shorter.
Also I love the Kriegsmesser.
Ayyy, got to love seeing the old Messer!
BEAUTIFUL
It's like a mini Guan Dao, that's cool! If you ever get your hands on one Skal it would be awesome to see a full size one in action, almost no one has one and they are such devastating and beautiful weapons. If I ever had to slay monsters in some fantasy land I'd be using one of them :)
The design of that "sword staff" (or whatever it's really called) is really nice.
fell in love with it
Whoa! Excellent!
This thing basically has anime cutting power but in real life. It’s almost comical
Also, always good to get a cameo from the big war knife. It’s like seeing an old friend at this point lol
That was awesome!
Love me a good cut compilation, very satisfying...
The pole arm is great, but I always love it when you break out the langmesser
Love how we started off with Tang-Talk w/Rick, show the finish and cordage in the middle, then some swole sword chops to chase it all. gj Skall & Thanks Rick!
This gentleman is a true master of his craft! :D
.....👆i got something special for you🎁🎁🎁..
It's always good to know a blade Smith /blacksmith for the times in the Apocalypse
I want one of these!
Muy buenos cortes, dominas bien la naginata.
This guy could have supplied a medieval army on his own. 5 hours for a functional hybrid blade is nuts.
Guys just got a bunch of bulk eyewash sitting around.
The focus face is the best!
"This guy makes it in one day"
Perfect for mass production for an army
The intro gut me hooked!
Love this, it's like a short naginata
With all these water bottles cut, maybe should set up a flower bed or vegetable plot around the post so the water doesn't get wasted.
Need me one of those!
Most satisfying!
Made one also, 3ft pole . Very handy and not very cumbersome.
Added a 1 ¼ lbs stainless ball on bottom.
I have been looking for something like this for years
Well, that certainly looks like fun.
so much fun !
I had a weapon design idea similar to this. Basically a short sword but with a long hilt, long enough to give it the overall length of a non-short sword. The idea was to be able to grip it near the end of the hilt for reach and/or more leverage/power, but also have the option to grip it closer to the blade for situations where room and space was an issue.
Does look sharp indeed
Oh dude I’m so gonna make one of those for myself. I might give it a slight back edge that tapers into a spear point and see how that works but good lord I need something like that
Made in half a day, damn. Rick is flexing indeed.
One day? What a frickin legend.
