  • At the northern end of Nelson Lakes National Park lies the start of one of the most popular overnight tramps (hikes), Robert Ridge Route. This track traverse’s alpine terrain, which can make it potentially very hazardous. These are excellent overviews of the respective treks in NZ. I’ve known of many of these but never felt compelled to walk them - these videos has changed all that.

    Please, never stop doing these videos. I know they're a lot of effort and currently the views aren't necessarily coming in but they are WONDERFUL resources.
    On the other hand, is roberts ridge intermediate in any part of the track?

      Totally agree, such videos are the most informative among all others!!!
      You can hike first third of the track (~2hrs one way) in any running shoes in the summer.
      The rest of the track is advanced and you would need proper hiking boots.

    30. 12. 2023 finally did it. Amazing trip. The Angelus hut is another level - double glazed, spacious with extensive deck area. Went in via Mt. Robert ridge and came out through Speargrass track due to low visibility/rain - a good option to add more variety of terrains and scenery regardless of weather. The only issue was lots of river/stream crossing - water level rising and fast flow. More challenging than we thought. It is the experience you will never forget for sure! Thank you very much for your comprehensive video that inspired us to visit. Looking forward to more inspiration from you. 😊

    Did the ridge walk solo few years back. No mountaineer but in great weather was superb trip with amazing views! Bush line hut fantastic & placement of shelters on point. Don't take any gambles though. Very exposed! Not for less than skilled alpine walkers if weather less than perfect..and be prepared to call it off if/when conditions go bad.

    Great video, been up there many, many times. But you should have included footage of winter conditions too.

    What software do you use to make those 3D maps with the overlaid topo map?

    That ridge looks scary!! But I'd love to do this...perhaps next summer, if it's better than this one

    Interesting that my Facebook feed gave me a reminder of doing this today back in 2016. It looks like our group did everything wrong according to the video as we started from the Mt Robert carpark after 1.00pm not before 9.00am as recommended in the video. As I recall we arrived at the hut at around 7.30pm, so less than 6.5 hrs on the track. The following morning we got up and summited Mt Angelus before returning to Mt Robert carpark via the Speargrass track. We were prepared for the worst but had ideal conditions throughout the tramp.

      You did ok Mike. A late sunset can forgive a late start. 6.5 hours is a good time.

    is it better to climb up robert ridge to angelus hut or better to come down robert ridge to because you will have better views of lake rotoiti?

    • @Longtack55
      @Longtack55 Před 2 lety

      You see Lake Rotoiti only when close to it - in the walk up Pinchgut for 1 hour or Bushline Track for 2 hours or in reverse.
