  • The Alpine Route in Mt Richmond Forest Park is considered by many to be the toughest part of the Te Araroa trail. It makes up just one section of the larger Richmond Ranges section from Pelorus Bridge to St Arnaud, though it can be attempted on its own for those not doing the Te Araroa Trail. This section is known for rough, exposed terrain, numerous river and creek crossings, hot and dry conditions in summer and the need to carry supplies and be independent for an extended period. You’ll need to be an experienced, well-prepared tramper to tackle this challenge.
This video explores the Alpine Route section to help you prepare for the harsh conditions, particularly in exposed areas.
