  • Honda's return to F1 in 2015 was full of a lot of troubles. Their engines would fail more often than not and their partnership with McLaren pretty much became a meme. However, since then, they have rebuilt themselves with Toro Rosso, become race winners again with Red Bull, and are now leading both the Drivers' and Constructors' championships. Here is the story of how they went from being a meme to the best engine suppliers in F1.

Just like how Renault engine brought lots of success to RBR. But when the relationship stops working it stops working. Now RBR is better off going with Honda.
You’ve got to remember that McLaren had every reason to be unhappy with the Honda engines. Sure, by the end there was a toxic dynamic, but at the beginning both parties would have been positive and cooperative. Ultimately, Honda didn’t deliver and McLaren were frustrated. Then they want more control because they feel Honda is inept, that stifles Honda, Honda grow frustrated and so on and so forth.
Same thing with Renault and RBR.
When this happens, a fresh start is often the best outcome. Renewed investment. A clean slate and new benchmarks for success.

Honda were never underdogs in F1. They dominated the first turbo era in the 80's and won 6 straight constructors' titles with Williams and McLaren in 1986-1987-1988-1989-1990-1991, and 5 straight drivers' titles Piquet 87, Senna 88, Prost 89, Senna 90, Senna 91. Honda has been winning races in F1 since 1965 so winning is nothing new for them.

It wouldn't work with the mentality McLaren had at the time. they shouted that they had the best chassis but it was just held back by Honda, and giving Honda more space would ruin the chassis. The switch they did to Renault showed them that their chassis wasn't that good. As the Renault was a race winning engine, but McLaren wasn't showing wins with a race winning engine and so called best chassis.
Meanwhile redbull/torro rosso said that Honda should just build the best engine, penalties for extra revisions be damned. And they would make the chassis fit.

Dennis left and Brown joined which changed the whole dynamic. Also the spending had to be cut down as Mclaren weren't in a good shape and so they had to give up on the exclusive engine deal.
It was better for Honda to join a team that was at the top and improve thereon because RB would always have one of the best chassis's on the grid so Honda would know where they are lacking
As for Mclaren, they had to make that shuffle especially in the leadership dept even on the technical side because it clearly wasn't working and now they're in a good shape to actually have an exclusive engine deal maybe from 2025 with Audi or Porsche?

Thanks for the great video. Other points to add: In this current era of F1, Honda started from further behind than people realise. After several years consulting with the existing engine manufacturers - Mercedes, Ferrari, and Renault - the FIA announced the new PU format in 2011. You can bet those manufacturers already had advanced prototypes running during those years of consultation, at least 3 years before Honda would have had its own prototype. Upon its return in 2015, Honda also had to homologate its 1st generation PU - before it was even raced! Crucially, everyone else had a whole season of competition to iron-out defects and improve their PUs. Add to that, the development token penalty system, and McLaren's "size zero" constraints, and Honda were significantly restricted with its ability to develop its engine. I don't think many people appreciate the scale of this challenge.
With the development token and size zero shackles off, Honda were free to develop their desired 2nd generation PU in 2016. Now, Honda is arguably producing the best PU on the grid this year.

    Awesome intro Ben!
Yes, it has been quite the turnaround for Honda, and might I add McLaren, in such a short space of time. Being a McLaren fan in those years was painful at times, but it was quite clear that Honda and McLaren were never able to work together under Ron Dennis's management, because McLaren were a bit too stubborn in their ways, and Honda was massively behind on engine development compared to the other manufacturers.
A part of me thinks that the McLaren-Honda partnership might have been more of a success had it been under the management of Zak Brown and Andreas Seidl, as both of them have brought a refreshing attitude to the team which was badly needed under the last few years of the Ron Dennis era. But alas, it wasn't to be. But both Honda and McLaren have risen from the ashes, which makes it all the more upsetting that Honda are walking away from the sport just as they are about to become competitive, AGAIN!

Who knows, maybe we should give a big TY to Fernando for being so critical of Honda a few years ago.
This is just brainstorming here obviously.. but knowing the Japanese culture, failure is not something they can let go easily, if something isnt good and it makes them look bad, they will do anything in their powers to change that.
So who knows, that "GP2 Engine" statement might actually have been the trigger at Honda to show they do know what they are doing and that they can deliver a world class engine, capable of winning races and potentially winning championships.
Either way, i am ever so happy to see Honda back where they belong, a small reminder of the Honda Mugen days perhaps.
Still sad to see them leave the sport now they got that engine up to spec and are in a serious fight for both championships, but if you are leaving the sport... what better way than to take a title home with you. (maybe both!)
Never underestimate Japanese pride.. i am certain that has a lot to do with it, why they came back so strong as they have.

This is one of the greatest storys in motorsport. It's a shame they chose to leave, I wonder would they have still left if the knew how good they would be this year.
