    Curious, you are doing two boards in the kitchen area. Is that because it's the kitchen area? I know nothing about this stuff, just thought this was interesting. I am glad you have help. It really sped up the time it is taking to get this done. ❀❀

  • @bruceadler-9410
    @bruceadler-9410 Pƙed 2 dny

    +10:30 you need to add bridging (aka blocking, or nogging) between all those floor joists at the middles of their spans. Because you've got a random combination of sistered and doubled joists, to get a good fit for each piece of bridging, you'll probably have to individually measure and cut each piece of bridging. If you had placed a standard sized piece of bridging between each new joist as you placed each of them 16-inches on center, all the pieces of bridging could have been cut all the same size all at once (i.e. 14.5-inches wide for single joists, 13-inches for doubled joists). If your joists aren't exactly 16-inches on center, you might also have to individually measure and cut a lot of your sub-floor so the edges of each panel end up on the centers of the joists.

  • @bruceadler-9410
    @bruceadler-9410 Pƙed 2 dny

    +3:00 those joist look like they've been notched about 50% of their height. You're not supposed to notch the ends of joists more than 1/6th of their height. Any joists that are notched that deeply without a ledger board supporting them are compromised and the floor in that area is going to sag, and eventually the ends of those joists will split off. To compensate for those deep end notches, you need to add a ledger board on the foundation wall under those joists, or jack post posts under the ends each of those notched floor joists .
    +5:30 those 2x4 joist brackets aren't helping at all because the joists aren't seated against the bottoms of the brackets. And there's not enough distance from the edge of the joists to drive nails or screws through the holes in the bracket (nails in the face of a joist have to be at least half the width of the joist away from the edge of the joist). Something like a Simpson H1A tie-down bracket (with or without a ledger board on the foundation wall below the joists) would be more effective. If there was a ledger board on the foundation wall, there are multiple different other choices of retrofit brackets which would help to stiffen and strengthen your new floor.

    Curious/confused. But you put up joist hangers, but they had a gap and weren't supporting the joist. Am I missing something?

  • @alantorrance6153
    @alantorrance6153 Pƙed dnem

    Joist hangers, such as at 5:32, where you have the hanger drooping down a bout 2 inches below the bottom of the joist. Why? The idea of the joist hanger is that it supports the joist as well as locating it on the stringer/beam. With so much empty air between the joist and the hanger, it is not supporting anything. Those first holes in the sides of the support bracket are supposted to nail or bolt into the sides of the joists. But if you moved those hangers into their proper vertical position, the tops of the hangers would have to be bent over so that the bolt hgoles would allow bolting from the top side. You have designed problems for yourself there.

  • @bruceadler-9410
    @bruceadler-9410 Pƙed 2 dny

    +8:30 It look like some of your doubled-up joists don't have enough nails. It looks to me like you drove 1 nail about every 24-inches in a staggered pattern. That's half as many as you need. And a bunch of extra nails near the ends of the joist don't really help much. To be most effective you have to drive nails along the whole length of the joists, not just near the ends. Drive a double row of nails in a staggered pattern 12-inches on center, the whole length of the joist, and at least 1.5-inch away from any edge. And, if both sides are accessible, drive nails the same 12-inch staggered pattern both sides of both joists. A fully nailed 10-foot long 2x8 joist would have at least 44 equally spaced 10-penny nails (ie twenty-two 3-inch nails on each side).

  • @alantorrance6153
    @alantorrance6153 Pƙed dnem

    The screws you are putting into the joists you are putting in at an agle towards the end of the joists. Those ends are weaker than at the distance where the screws start their joirney. Why not put them in at right angles???? Surely that would be more sensible, and also more akin to driving nails with the hammer.
