Joan Hickson was such a brilliant Ms. Marple. I just loved her. Audiobooks are a must for me in the car, usually lighter reads or mysteries that don't require intense concentration. If I'm in an especially gripping part of a story, I'll purposely add miles to my travel. And they're real lifesavers when stuck in traffic. Presently I'm listening to Dear Mrs. Byrd. Anna Popplewell is a delightful narrator. Thank you for all of these wonderful suggestions!

Miranda, I have recently discovered your channel, and have been watching all of your current videos and working my way though your backlist videos :). Thank you for taking the time to provide comprehensive reviews of books and authors that are both familiar and new to me.
I'm not an audio books listener, but when I heard you mention Winnie-The-Pooh & Alan Bennett, it brought back memories.
When I was a child, I would so look forward to sitting in our living room in the winter, in front of our big wooden stereo cabinet listening to radio episodes of Winnie-The-Pooh. It was one of those magical childhood moments that lasted over a winter season that I will never forget.

I never thought of them as audio books, though of course my Peter Pan and Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland, even Disney's Pinocchio too, I listened to over and over on my record player in the 50s. So true how listening which I did over and over gets them sunk in. I do like Benedict Cumberbatch playing All the audio roles in Ngaio Marsh' s White Tie Murders. He's excellent! Reads others of hers too

I am an audiobook addict, too. And I agree with you 100% about Ian Carmichael/Dorothy Sayers, Martin Jarvis, Jonathan Cecil/P.G. Wodehouse (I think The Mating Season is one of my favorites), and Christopher Timothy/All Creatures. I also tend to re-read by listening. I also like Simon Vance reading Anthony Trollope and Julian Rhind-Tutt as a narrator. He has a wonderful voice. I mostly recently listened to him as Bassanio in an audiobook production of The Merchant of Venice. I also like the narrator Nadia May/Wanda McCaddon (same person!). She reads some Angela Thirkell and Jane Austen that are favorite listens of mine. This was so fun, Miranda. Thank you!

Hi Miranda. I've just finished Mrs Dalloway on audiobook. I really loved it. I thought I might struggle with the book. Because of the writing style. Im a casual reader. I read for enjoyment. It was a challenging listen however I soon got used to the style and followed it fine pretty much. I had to focus otherwise I'd get lost. I know its deliberately meandering but it all came together towards the end. It's definitely not for everyone. I now feel comfortable to tackle the novels. My favourite character other than Mrs Dalloway was Ms Kilman.

I love audiobooks and like you, they are frequently re-listens, to be enjoyed whilst i do chores, or, much more enjoyably, when i sit and sew.
Favourite narrator is Miriam Margoyles; I particularly enjoy her reading of the Mapp and Lucia books. Unfortunately they are abridged, but brilliantly characterised by Miriam.
Elizabeth Gouge’s ‘The Little White Horse’ is available on audiobook, narrated by Juliet Stevenson, I think it too is abridged but can’t quite remember, it was a while ago that I listened to it.
For an author narrating their own books, I just adore Fannie Flagg. Her books are a real comfort listen (as well as a comfort read!). I would heartily recommend ‘I still dream about you’ and ‘Welcome to the World Baby Girl’, also ‘Standing in the Rainbow’.
Thank you for another engaging video Miranda! X

Hi Miranda, well that was so interesting! I haven't had any recommendations before for audio books and now I have added quite a few to my audible wishlist to look forward to. I really think my 'audio' book reading started as a child in the kitchen whilst Mum was preparing lunch or ironing and Listen With Mother was on the radio, I have such vivid memories of how lovely that felt and so my love of listening to books grew from there. I love listening to audio books when I’m doing the housework. They really help to pass the time when you are doing monotonous tasks. I love Agatha Christie, particularly the Joan Hickson ones (she was the best Miss Marple in my opinion). At the moment I’m listening to Coming Home by Rosamund Pilcher, I’ve read the book numerous times but first time listening to the audio book. A non-fiction favourite is the Christmas Chronicles by Nigel Slater which he narrates. I listened to it during the run up to Christmas last year and want to listen again this year.

I love these audiobook sugestions! I've always got an audiobook going and it's usually an Agatha Christie. My favorite narrator of her books is Hugh Fraser, but I have to admit that "Sleeping Murder" is not only my favorite Agatha Christie book, but also audiobook. Followed closely by "A Murder is Announced", "The Carribean Mystery", "Nemesis" and "The Listerdale Mystery". I really love the Kate Morton audibooks, too - Caroline Lee is amazing! Can't wait to listen to the ones you suggested here. I also collect vintage mini 35 rpm book/record combos - I have The Hobbit (from the 1970s), Cinderella, Winnie-the-Pooh, Wizard of Oz and The Shy Little Kitten. Also, 100% agree with you about reading the book first and then listening to it. Audiobooks are definitely a comfort read for me, too! Thank you :D

The best audio narrator I’ve heard is Tom Hollander reading The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling; he’s absolutely amazing with voicing every character. The worst I’ve heard was Ed Asner, and I can’t even remember the book (maybe a murder mystery). I couldn’t finish because his reading was so bad. Usually actors do a pretty good job, so it was surprising. Thank you for all of your recommendations!

Hi Miranda, I wrote last week that I was so glad I finally found someone to recommend books that I would love. I’ll just comment on everything here rather than in individual videos. You mentioned not liking Wuthering Heights. I completely agree. I never understood the hype about that book. Some people said it was the best book they ever read. I just don’t get it. I had to force myself to finish it once (never again). I wanted to finish it because I kept thinking it had to get better since so many people love it. I read it probably 30 years ago (I’m almost 57). You’re the first person I know that’s ever had the same opinion on that book. The reviews on Amazon are just unbelievable.
On Ian McEwan: You mentioned Atonement in one of your videos. I didn’t care for that book either. I had to force myself to finish it. I don’t like starting a book and then not finishing it but I’m trying to get out of that habit so I don’t waste time when there are so many good books to read. I thought Atonement was extremely boring. I didn’t care for the movie either. Actually, I don’t like any of Ian McEwan. I’ve tried several of his books because he’s such a popular writer; they make movies based on his books. But I find him extremely boring. I listened to “Saturday” on audio when I used to commute to work. I guess it’s his writing style that doesn’t appeal to me. After a few pages of “On Chesil Beach,” I gave it up, but I enjoyed the movie somewhat because I like Saoirse Ronan, although it was sad. There is no description bad enough for “Enduring Love,” and the movie. One of the absolute worst. Okay, everyone has different tastes so there is a writer for everyone. Ian McEwan is NOT for me. What is your opinion? Do you agree with any of this?
I subscribed to “Slightly Foxed.” I’m so excited. Had never heard of it. I used to subscribe to Book Marks magazine and I pick up Book Pages from my library. Then I moved on to New York Review of Books a few years ago on and off. I was looking for a different review publication (preferably from London) but couldn’t find any with really good reviews. Then when you talked about Slightly Foxed, I knew it was for me. My birthday is in December, and then there’s Christmas, so I got it for my BD and Christmas present to myself. I hope I’ll enjoy it as much as you do.
One thing we don’t have in common is enjoying short stories. I can’t get into them even from some writers I really like. I like a thick book that I can sink my teeth into and go to a different place. I don’t really care for audibles either because I can’t concentrate on listening and do something else at the same time. I would zone out and wouldn’t even know what I was listening to. I might have a better chance while driving but I work from home now so I don’t drive anywhere. I prefer holding a book. Not a fan of poetry either but I might try it again; some books you've recommended.
After I found your channel last weekend, I spent about three days watching your videos and ordering mostly used books that you suggested from writers I hadn’t heard of before. I’m in the US and except for the well-known writers like Agatha Christie, Anthony Horowitz, etc., my library doesn’t have them. My library had a lot of Miss Read and I got one to try. I was able to find reasonably priced boarding school books from Ebay, Abe books and Better World Books. I also ordered Fortnite in September, which I will read before I watch your video. Was wondering if you’ve read any books by Rose Tremain or Douglas Kennedy. I like several books by both of them. Sorry my comment is so long. Please keep the wonderful videos coming.
p.s. I loved The Shell Seekers, which I probably read in my early 20s, but I remember it. I got Coming Home from the library and am reading it now. And I will read September. You reminded me of Rosemunde Pilcher. I will probably read The Shell Seekers again also. Your voice is so calming and comforting. One night when I was watching a video, I fell asleep. Not because you're boring at all but because you're a peaceful, calming person. Thank you!

I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos! I do admire Emily Brontë as a writer, and I have in fact read Wuthering Heights three times, so I don't hate it, but it's definitely not my favourite of the Brontë books, and I've never understood the fascination for Heathcliff!! I haven't read a lot of Ian McEwan, but I don't think he's really a writer for me. That's wonderful you've subscribed to Slightly Foxed! I think it's a brilliant magazine, and I hope you enjoy it too. Happy reading! xxx

This video was fascinating to me, primarily because I'm in almost every way the opposite of you in how I consume audiobooks! I came to them very late, only about a couple of years ago and way after podcasts, which I've adored for years and have always been trying to catch up on. I mostly listen to new stuff and primarily non fiction on audio. And I absolutely have to actively listen - so great for my commutes (when I used to have them) or walking, though I get the point about being aware of what's going on around you, esp. When walking alone at night. I also listen to them when ironing or maybe cooking but I'm obsessed about not missing out a thing so hoovering would be a no-no! The narrator is very important to me like you, though I don't often have much choice - I don't support Amazon and its parent companies so I rely on my library's app Libby for borrowing audio books - though I've heard of a few initiatives from independent bookshops and publishers trying to get audiobook purchasing off the ground on a new platform outside Audible, so fingers crossed this works. All in all, I loved this video, thank you Miranda!

Miranda, this was a brilliant video - thank you! You inspired me to give audiobooks a go. Normally I'm a podcast and BBC 4 book of the week listener but have not made a habit of audiobooks b/c my concentration gets pulled away while multitasking. But your idea of listening to those books you've previously read makes a lot of sense and might work for me. My library has a nice selection so I may try that before joining audible. Librivox also has some good classics available for free that I've downloaded. Like you, I always first sample the narrator(s) because voice is so important as you mentioned and must be intelligent and mellifluous. Librivox's quality can vary wildly but they do have some very talented narrators. Thanks again, Miranda - love all your videos! xx

    Another terrific video, Miranda.
For those who haven't listened to a book before, let me just say that it is not just someone reading a book aloud, they are performances - at least the good ones are. It is amazing how a single narrator can create unique voices, inflections, etc., for each character. But you're right, the narrator can make or break it. Was recently very disappointed by Anna Karenina read by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
A few years ago I was having a lot of stress in my life and was having trouble sleeping. Miss Silver to the Rescue! read by Diana Bishop. Soothing voice and lovely little mysteries (almost bloodless and no sex crimes or child murders). I like Golden age crime stories as modern ones are just too grim.

Libro FM has the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries narrated by Ian Carmichael. And they donate part of the price of the audiobooks to your favorite independent bookstore.

One book that I heard before reading, and I'm glad I did because I think the narrator added so much, is Diane Setterfield's "Once Upon A River" read by Juliette Stephenson. If you haven't read it I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I just found you a few days ago, and really enjoy your taste in reading material! Yes, I do love audiobooks, and tend to listen in the same way. If I’m not keeping busy while listening I will fall asleep! I love the Jeeves books, although I almost never keep track of the narrator, so not sure if it’s Ian Carmichael who’s reading them (I’m in the US). Just wanted to add that I’m currently listening to The Murder at the Vicarage (which I did happen to read, although it was so long ago, that I’m not sure I remember who did it) and it’s read by Richard E. Grant, who does a marvelous job - highly recommend!

The first audiobook I remember loving was the Narnia Series. I listened to my cassette tapes (that came in a wardrobe box!) over and over again. I still haven't found the version I had back then digitally, and I have forgotten the narrator and lost the tapes. One day!

I also love Jonathan Cecil! And Gussie’s speech in Right Ho, Jeeves....sheer brilliance. One of my other favorites in Wodehouse is the flower-pot scene in Leave it to Psmith. I was listening to it while driving and actually had to pull over I was laughing so hard. 😂😂😂 A Murder is Announced read by Joan Hickson is absolutely brilliant. I also really loved Stephen Fry’s narration of Mythos and Heroes, and if you do middle grade, I’d recommend The Mysterious Benedict Society series by Trenton Lee Stewart (read by Del Roy), and The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series read by Katherine Kellgren. I also love the Paddington series and Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody series narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. Also, science shows that your brain processes the book the same whether you read it with your eyes or listen to it. And for the blind and visually impaired, it’s the only way they can read apart from Braille, and very few books are printed in Braille.

I too love audio books (and I listened to Tea and Tattle in between audio books) and recently listened to a book called Lovely War by Julie Berry. The audio book had some great narrators including Jayne Entwistle, John Lee and Fiona Hardingham and included original music. I think this would be an interesting book to read and then to listen to - would love to hear what you think if you have a chance to read and listen to it. Thanks so much for all the videos - I find myself really looking forward to them especially the tea reads.

I am an audiobook and podcast addict. While doing housework, yard work, cooking, exercising, driving, grocery shopping...My favorite narrators are Robin Miles, Kate Reading, and the late Katherine Kellgren. I used to listen and not read Ryhs Bown's Royal Spyness books because of her narration. This July, I listened to Rosamund Pike's narration of Pride and Prejudice and I surprisingly quite enjoyed it. Currently listening to Rebecca narrated by Anna Massey. Since you like reading mysteries, do you have any favorites from the British Library CrimesClassics? I started in the Summer one, Resorting to Murder, but I wasn't able to finish it. I found the collection uneven. Might finish the book next Summer. Maybe you could do a video on this collection of mysteries? And any favorites podcasts you like to listen to?

That Rebecca is such a good version! To be honest, I find The British Library Crime Classics pretty hit and miss, and I haven’t bought very many. I used to do my own bookish podcast; I don’t listen to any regularly as there are none I really love anymore! Probably Woman’s Hour is what I listen to the most 💫

Do you listen on any other platforms apart from Audible? I've been trying a few different non Amazon owned options out and I like Scribd best. For about the same price as audible (or maybe cheaper) you can borrow as many books as you like a month. You don't own them like you do on audible and the selection of books available isn't as wide as audible. But I've still found over 300 on there that I want to listen to. Might not be great for you as it has more American new releases rather than british cosy classics, but it does have lots of Agatha Christie. And I listened to the first Peter Whimsey on there, Brontes, Austen and Georgette Heyer. Maybe worth a free trial anyway if you haven't already! I use it listen to lots of short books that i'd feel bad wasting an audible credit on. I'm not sponsored by Scribd haha, despite this essay!

Such an interesting video - thank you, Miranda. A point that didn't come up - do you listen at normal speed or do you speed things up? I always watch youtube videos at 1.5 speed at least - no, they don't sound like Mickey Mouse! So little time, so much to listen to! xxx

I listen at normal speed; I don’t like the sound of fast talkers! My dad listens to things at about x3, which I can listen to but just don’t find as enjoyable 💫
