The english are a funny bunch. 250 years ago they had a civil war because George from Germany and Charlie from France bothe wanted to be King of the UK. You'd think they could hve found someone in England. George's side won and "Bonnie Prince Charlie" hightailed it back to France, wher he eventually drank himself to death.
Firstly, why someone from England? it was a Scottish king, King James VI (James Charles STUART) that unified the monarchy of Scotland and England. Secondly, Bonnie Prince Charlie wasn't himself fighting for the throne, but rather for his father, James Francis Edward Stuart who was born in London.
Charlie was born in Rome and he was polish-Scottish if we look his ancestry. And when he died he already had left alcohol his last few years were alcohol free.

So ethnically in the old sense e.g. one's paternal line of descent both would be considered Saxon or German in the modern sense. Only recently was ethnicity seen as equivalent to nationality e.g. where one was born. That's why for example the Lords in England after the Norman conquest are called Norman and not English even if they lived here for a few hundred years, this changed with the loss of Normandy and their ancestral holdings. Thus much of England came under the moniker of Anglo-Norman after that. His mother was Princess Alice of Battenburg paternal descendant of the German Dukes of Hesse descended from Frankish noblemen. You must also realise that much of Europe's nobility is Germanic in the patriline due to intermarriage and the Germanic rulers produced more male heirs that survived than the none-Germanic rulers who tended to produce either more female heirs or were just unlucky in that their male heirs died.
Royal in-breeding.
our king wont come from london town, nor yet from donegal nor will he be from scotland for well have no king at all... brilliant

Terribly clever
But very wrong as his father was never German but he was in fact born the son of the king of Greece
His mother is also partly German : Elisabeth von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha . The name has been changed in 1917 to Windsor.
