Jackie Wilson, Tony Williams (the singer here), Clyde McPhatter, Sam Cooke were the great R&B voices that dominated the 50/60's. Listen to them all. For Tony do "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "My Prayer", "Red Sails In The Sunset" and "Twilight Time".

Kathy here - just found your channel. Love the Platters, I am 68 years old, and this was my parent's favorite group back in the day. The Platters were considered a "Rock n Roll" group back then. Their voices are so smooth, and the harmonies are amazing. I am not sure if there are any members still alive. But they were one of the most popular groups back in the 50's and 60's. Thanks for your reaction. Love seeing the younger generation finding music I grew up with.

Tony Williams is one of the best tenors of his day, no fancy electronic equipment just his natural voice and a few simple instruments. This is true singing.

My Dad was born in Nov 1939 and sadly passed away on Feb 15th, 2023.
This is one of his very favorite groups from the 1950s Rock and Roll era. Ever.
He was a huge fan of all the Doo Wap groups also.
When I hear these songs it reminds me of him and, brings a smile.
    Thank you.

It's the inimitable Tony Williams! "Hit that note," you said. That's the lingo we used back then! Listen to the group doing My Prayer, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, and Where. Tony Williams left the group in 1960 and could never be equally replaced. No other R&B lead singer could match his voice or even come close, with the single possible exception of Jackie Wilson.

No click track. No auto-tune. No Pro Tools. Hardly any post-production to speak of. What you are hearing on that recording is simply a man singing his ass off. That was the only way to do it back then. It seems like this particular version was lip-synced to the original studio recording for TV, but it's not like they couldn't actually sing that shit.
If you're going down this path, you need some Sam Cooke, you need some Jackie Wilson, and you absolutely need some Otis Redding.

Also, this was not pantomime or lip syncing. What you hear is what they are singing. Condenser mics and one shot at it. There was no "take-two's" back then. Especially and most unfortunately, for the African American. They came in through the kitchen and left through the kitchen. They were given minimal time to prepare and to exit. But that's all we needed to understand their greatness in the world of music

Try Shirley Bassey; like Tom Jones she's from Wales (Nigerian father) aged 65 in 2002 singing Diamonds are Forever and Goldinger on TV. Oh and with comedian Les Dawson on his show in 1989- comic banter, a little duet and her singing I Am What I Am. Nat King Cole that marvellous crooner e.g When I Fall in Love.
