We just got a D1 prospect wrestler who just joined our gym. He's an absolute nightmare to deal with on the mats. The purple belts can barely get grips on the guy. Wrestling isn't appreciated enough in the States.

Be thankful it's just 1.Idk where you are, but my gym is full of high school and college wrestlers. Not all of them stay, but the ones who do get good fast. That said they are young and can train all day while Im working, on top of being younger and faster. Then they bring their buddies.

I read that it was Rolls Gracie that first added wrestling and judo to bjj?
He went to competitions and even got Rickson to do the same.
They say Rickson skill level sky-rocketed once he started training with Rolls.

💯... i don't do BJJ but I tried to explain this to a couple of partners of mine about starting standing up, they didn't accept it at first, but slowly they started to accept it later on. All fights start standing up, and if they can't get someone on the ground to execute BJJ then their training goes out the window.

Most people don’t know that the “live rolls” at the end of each class come from the Carlson Gracie lineage. Not to mention the uniform the kimono was a paywall preventing poor people from training. Carlson was the first to let kids from the favelas train. He let the kids train for free I. Exchange for winning medals.

Helio was an old school ego maniac Master of a combat system. To be a purest when it comes to combat is silly. Gichin Funakoshi the founder of shotokan karate was sort of a purest in his vision of karate. He didn’t like that the founder of Wado Ryu Karate added elements of aikido to his style of karate. As if adding certain fighting techniques to karate dilute karate. Okinawan karate is a mixed martial art. Karate is a mixture of Southern Chinese fighting styles, wing chun ,white crane ,and hung gar. The Okinawans modified it and mix it with their fighting arts and Japanese jiujitsu.
Mas Oyama took Goju ,shotokan and judo , mixed them to create Kyokushin. Then Kyokushin challenged Muey Thai and then adapted some Thai techniques into Kyokushin. Kyokushin has even added capoeira kicks into the system. The Gracies should have added wrestling to their style 75 years when Helio first got nearly defeated by a wrestler.

This discussion is very important. Not everyone out there likes to bring it up.

  • @rippersubmissionwrestling2704

I honestly think George Gracie was the first fighter of the Gracie family. He was fighting in Vale Tudo fifty years before Rickson, Rolls or Royce! He literally fought anybody in any ruleset anytime or anywhere.

    RIP to Rolls.
Less than 1% know this. Rolls trained with Bob Anderson. This is where the Americana got its name.
Anyway. You have to understand, people see ADCC, NAGA, and the IBJJF world championships… they think this always existed. They’re not old enough to know this is all fairly recent( 95-98).
Old school Jujitieros competed in Judo, Luta Livre etc. People today have no concept that there was “self defense” … and basic striking in jujitsu.
Saulo Ribiero was a Judo black belt before he started training under the Gracie’s. He states, “ Judo and Jujitsu are wings of the same bird.”
In his affiliated schools, you have to know 8 Judo techniques and Gracie self defense to be promoted to blue belt. The kids have a Judo club( yes they compete in Judo).
    I’ll stop there.
    Great video.

I love this. Only ninjutsu has more lies in its history than BJJ. Carlson was also adamant that the self-defence aspect of BJJ be taught primary. I doubt he'd consider this modern day fitness center rolling around with no knowledge of real fighting as martial arts or BJJ.

Hey, brother as a double brown belt Judo/BJJ I appreciate your insight as a hobbyist at best I am no professional. I think the dynamic nature of learning how to balance you body and dynamic movement it takes to actually make throws happen and break fall are skills that must be developed and not to mention how to fall are all skills that are best learned at a young age.

@judokajoe1970: If you are a brown in Judo and BJJ you are NOT a hobbyist. That means you can throw a man into the best position for a submission. Great to have you with us.

Ty. Gracie secret. Rolls was from an affair. So yes, there is a lot of bias and politics of the Gracie narrative and branding way back in the day. Thanks

Interesting enough, Jigaro Kano, a judoka, trained the grandfather Gracie (forgot his name but it was the early 1900's I believe).

You just inspired me to take a deep dive into the history. We started grappling on our knees in college. Never understood it. Im primarily a goju ryu man and like a strong base whenever possible.

i will maybe jump the shark here but I would be really curious how you would mix it up with Renzo, in person. Within a general MMA ruleset, of some sorts... My sense? To put it briefly, I would foresee a possible Nuno de Santos type of situation, just to be a little cryptic. :) I like immaginary enigmas like that, ... in any case, Respect! U are real as it gets.

@bigk1555: Hello, I do not look to get rich from MA, but my standards for teaching is high. For what I teach and how I teach, a man 5'1 and 110 pounds would be a problem. But the dedication and firm belief in what I teach is a must.

Why do we train on the ground? Training is compartmentalized and to minimize injury. We have takedown class for take down. Wrestling class is for wrestling, and mma class is mma.

Good video, but you will always have critics. If you allow comments on your page (and you should, and I respect any body who allows comments on their page), you will have comments that you like , and you will have comments that you don't like. It's just part of it. You almost have to ignore the trolls.
