  • By: Alistair Begg || Preached: 9/6/2020 ― (1 Samuel 30) David hit rock bottom when he and his army returned to Ziklag to find their home destroyed and their families taken captive. After David sought the Lord, though, he and his men defeated the enemy, rescued their loved ones, and recovered everything that had been taken. Alistair Begg examines how a “chance” encounter with an Egyptian servant led to David’s triumph, which he graciously shared, foreshadowing the eternal victory only King Jesus is able to secure.

I really appreciate the teachings from the Old Testament. It is far too often neglected. It’s like watching Empire before A New Hope.

Like Parkside, my church has not met as a group on site of the “church” building following the mandate of social distancing. Graciously, we have been able to continue worshipping our Lord robustly. A lesson we are learning every virtual Sunday service and every virtual bible class is that our community is not defined by the four walls but by our commitment to Christ, to the Word and to each other. Much like the chosen had to learn during the Babylonian exile, Jerusalem is not the center of our faith and worship. The center of our faith is in our hearts. COVID-19 has forced us to adjust to a challenging situation. During this moment in history we have strengthened our prayer life for each other within the global community of believers. God bless Rev. Begg and God bless all pastoral leaders.

Thank you so much for this sermon. I was wondering if Pastor Begg would think it a stretch to compare the Egyptian that David met as a type of Simon the Cyrene? Cyrene was a part of Ptolemaic Egypt at one time. And in the providence of God Simon just happened to be there to “help” Jesus as He was on the road to redeem all that was His as David did in 1 Samuel. As i was reading that was something that just came to my mind. Thoughts?

As if God needs our help. Would that not be a type of works?
