That crucial period of games took Nadal's legs out for the rest of the match. It explained why Rafa looked slower defending afterwards, as well as making bad dropshots and net plays out of desperation. Maybe you'd get away with it against a lesser powered player, but Hurkacz hits big and deep consistently and there's no escaping that.

Correct. Once a player is able to handle the topspin above shoulder's height, there is honestly nothing in Rafa's game. Nadal's game has always been one dimensional topspin bullying the backhand. Novak is also someone who could flatten it out straight to his forehand.

@@Supreme-ni1yt That's far from Nadal's only tactic. But it is one he used an awful lot, especially on clay and especially against Fed. But, of course, a big part of that was because Fed's rally backhand drive sucked and he was terrible at dealing with Rafa's high kicking ball to his backhand. If you watch old matches of Nadal versus players with strong backhands, he didn't focus on that side nearly as much. Against Fed he hit nearly everything on that side. And why not? It worked.

If it works it works, but he abused the hell out of that tactic goddamn.
It's like a cheat code because it's almost impossible to get such a ball back in play. Even if the player does return the ball it will still land in his strike zone. On clay almost everyone was terrible dealing with that kicking ball, including the double handed backhanders. Novak was able to do it but couldn't maintain it for many hours. That grinding style got on my nerves ngl 🤣

Anyone who plays tennis at an intermediate or high level... or even if you watch and appreciate the game at the court level, knows the toll it can take on your body.
Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem are two players who put in the most effort, physically and mentally per shot... look at what happened to Thiem. In addition to his injury, he is also mentally burnt out. An average bloke won't even last 6 months, let alone 2 decades if they replicate Nadal's style...the effort and toll, on the body and mind is colossal.
In addition to the stars being aligned and genetics, the reason Rafael Nadal was able to sustain for so long: his greatest weapon, his mindset. He has turned debilitating OCD (atleast on court) to a weapon- I have to fight and suffer and absolutely not give up on every point and additionally destroy my opponent...regardless of whether my mind body or emotions cooperate. It's the same "psychopathic" mindset Jordan and Kobe Bryant had. Win or die trying.

Obviously, you can't replicate 100% of player attributes. Tbf, Federer’s last good season was also at 38. After 2019 he struggled with injuries and then couldn’t get back to a level to consistently compete for the biggest tournaments anymore. Father Time can shut the door suddenly from one season to the next and quicker than we’d like, and in some cases there’s a definite point of no return which in Rafa’s case were the injuries at Indian Wells and Wimbledon in 2022.
To sum it up, the big 3 have made 37-40yrs old the new 33-36 in tennis, which is the age when most elite players in previous eras would have typically fallen from the top of the game already, or even retired outright.

A prime Nadal would have won but without a huge effort. Hubi is playing excellent on clay this year and to beat him on a slow court you need explosiveness. Exactly what Raffa can’t do anymore without almost certain injury.
