    Hi Tim. Yes, I was an airline pilot with BOAC which in the 1970s became British Airways. I flew the Boeing 707. You are right that we always taught 'never trust your eyes - your brain will tell you you see what you want to see'. Instead, trust your instruments. The greatest gifts for flying are the ones you demonstrate in your videos, which are planning and spatial awareness. You have both.

    Your aviation reference was spot on. Retired air traffic here after 40+ years. Airline pilots almost always fly by instruments, but not believing them has killed a lot of GA (private) pilots. JFK Jr was a classic case. He got caught over water at night with reduced visibility. If he had only believed his instruments (the aircraft was equipped, but he didn't have his instrument rating yet) he and his passengers would still be here. His head told him he was turning while instruments said he was level. When he followed his head, he went into a spiral. It was a sad tale but happens way too often. The official description was continued visual flight into instrument conditions.
    I had the experience in the right seat. Flying in the clouds, looked down to grab a chart. When I came back up my head was convinced that we were in a turn. It took a couple minutes of watching the instruments to believe that we were actually straight and level. Had I been flying (without a license), we would have been in trouble.

      Right after JFK jr I had several private, instrument pilots request additional instruction at night out over the Gulf. Distractions would cause them to panic, listening to the head . Very tense moments before believing the gauges. Excellent learning situation for newbie’s. All of my students are put though a night time over the black water. Real life situation.

    One thing I have learned watching your videos is that docking is a lot more complicated than I thought. A lot of variables to consider. Wind, tide, speed for example.

      Thank you for watching Steve. The average weekend recreational boater has a power to weight ratio a few thousand times higher than we do. So they usually have the power to get them out of a bad situation. We have to plan it out because it takes so much more time and energy to stop or change the direction of a bigger unit. CUOTO

    Thank you Tim! I have always liked your approach to docking; you take your time, let wind and tide be your support and you save power and momentum to the situations you really need it. I totally agree with your way of doing it. But then I meet a lot of skippers that are the total opposite😅 They say "oh, don't be afraid of the dock, just use your power and speed and go for it" and they produce a lot of black smoke (and risk of damage)😅 And it makes me wonder; are there kind of two "schools" when it comes to docking? The black-smoke-risktakers on one hand and the more calm and defensive ones on the other..? I think you can see the different types in the leisure boat world to😅 By the way; it would be interesting if you shared some thoughts on docking on board Paquita also, when you get under way😃

    Your comment regarding commercial airline pilot viewers reminded me of personal contact with two pilots. I was transiting O'Hara and another airport. The two pilots, both working for legacy airlines and nearing retirement, were utterly captivated upon learning I had, at the time, only a 100 ton license. One pilot spent roughly 20 minutes with me grilling me about my work and how to acquire certification and licensing.

    Tim, watching an older trip, your last one up the East River, before you took the job in the Caribbean. I have so many memories of doing that same trip in my Pearson Electra (22 foot sloop) with a 5 HP Johnson twice for a weeklong cruise out the Sound and back.. tide dependent, we never sailed...The second time I did we buddy sailed with the same boat captained by a Hooker in training... what a blast...see you on the ones....We came out of Great Kills on Staten Island, and ran with the tide all the way to Hell Gate, "grossly overrated,"for small boats...and then east out the sound....

    All pilots don't trust their instruments b/c a fair number of them are not "Rated to use their Instruments" and that limits a lot of
    flights b/c flying visually requires that the weather be good & no weather is expected on their flight plans. I'm not a pilot either
    but I watch some of their channel as I do yours & both professions require a great deal of common sense over -n- above all the

      Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel Steven. Yes. Large ships don't have a transmission or reverse gear. They are directly coupled to the shaft and propeller. So if the ship's engine is running at dead slow, anything slower is shutting down the main. Also, the rudder loses most of it's effectiveness when the propeller is not turning. CUOTO

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  Před měsícem +2

      Thank you very much for watching. Things certainly have changed. But back then, before instruments, barges and ships were much smaller and many didn't operate in dark or poor conditions. CUOTO

    A question, if you please: Why, when ships are being escorted by tugs through the temporary channel between the remains of the Key Bridge, does the tug in the lead go backwards?

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  Před měsícem +2

      Thank you for watching Kenneth. Those are Tractor tugs and operate much differently than the conventional tugs I run. I would guess that they do it that way because their primary winch is mounted on their bow. CUOTO

    What are the ladder-like structures that appear to have an array of lights on them on the barges?
    It's just inward from the port side light in this video. I'm guessing something like pump or tank status.

    Yup, trust your instruments; and Murphy's Law applies, whether you're aviating or marinating. I disagree with your thought that you would not be a good pilot. Good judgment is the most important attribute required for safe flying, and you demonstrate that all the time.

    IFR means trust the instruments not that you don't the rest of the time. ears give false sensations. basic pilot stuff. flying has gotten super expensive now. the where you're going to wind up thingy reminds me of the HUDs in fighter sims that show where the aircraft is going to be without input. you just do it slower. the aviate, navigate, line showed your interest. PP check ride examiner hits me with...............are you cleared to land? about 200 ft from the runway on final. controlled field. uh huh, funny.
