  • Man Of Steel, the Zack Snyder Superman film, was met with a lot of mixed reviews and reactions from critics and audiences alike. However, I have always found Man Of Steel to be one of the greatest films of the genre and certainly it's most underrated. This editorial lays out my thoughts on Man Of Steel and why I hold it in such regard.

Can we talk about how underrated Hans Zimmer's score is for this movie? The theme for Superman was so powerful it gave me different emotions ranging from goosebumps, tears of sadness and joy. I vividly remember this theme playing during the credits and hearing a roar of applause in the theater. The theme is undoubtedly a theme of hope.

What makes Zod even more tragic is that he was literally bred to be in service to the preservation of Krypton. The guy was not born with the ability to choose where to put his loyalty to, or to reconsider actions that are horrific, because he was made with one true purpose that he cannot escape. He's not an individual shaped by trauma or experience; he's an individual molded from the start to only care about one thing. And it was only fitting that the person standing in his way was an individual of his own race who was born capable of choosing where his loyalty and destiny lied.

This exactly why I prefer DC. Because they actually make you think about how these heroes and villains have repercussions in the real world. The film was a complete package and an epic journey from start to finish. I love the graphic novels used, the properly executed punchlines, and the background of the characters introduced. This movie did a great job showing the sheer power and destructive capabilities of Kryptonians under a yellow sun. Bro I am insanely in love with this cinematography and combat sequence. Notice how Faora didn't bash Clark's masculinity or invoke any "girl power" nonsense? And still, she came off as a powerful female character in the movie. That's good writing by Goyer, the Nolan brothers, and Zack Snyder. Also brilliant acting by Crowe, Shanon, and Cavil.

John Campea, this is a Excellent explanation of the movie "Man Of Steel". I personlly really Loved this movie "Man Of Steel". I loved how you went into detail on why Superman was the way he was & why he made the decions that he made & why. I also liked how you went into details on the making & decisions that Zack & Writer of the movie (his name escape me) they made in the making of the film. Also how you compared it to other films. No Batman in this movie that John Campea is talking about here in this video. This movie "Man Of Steel" is Henry Cavills movie.

Another thing to consider, Zod wasn't even as much into killing humans as he was into provoking Clark to kill him. Pay attention how he doesn't even attack the people around, he only attacks Superman directly right until the culmination. He has the Warrior's Codex, so he can't really commit suicide hence he 'tricks' the Codex to force Superman kill him, and the only way his inner program enables this to happen is by a path of the warrior - in a battle to the death.
It really bothered me at first when I saw it because I expected Zod to be bloodlusted, but the more you watch MoS the more layers you get. It really does age like a fine wine.

Is it wrong for me to actually like this version of Superman more than the classical perfect Superman? I cannot picture myself a Superman with no flaws, no inner conflicts. Only a child would see those powers as the coolest thing ever. A more mature person would see them as a burden indeed, because "with great power comes great RESPONSIBILITY", and "absolute power can corrupt absolutely". I would most likely be no hero with those powers. And i would probably never see it that way anyway. Which part of being responsible and incorruptible did the classical Superman movies get? None. He was responsible from the get-go. None of the struggles, of the character build. He was perfect. Except for when he kills Zod and his goons, where nobody says anything against it, but do so in MoS. I really loved this movie, of a more human Superman, because any kryptonian on Earth would be humanized, his morals would be our imperfect, grey morals. We are not perfect. Why would we or should we expect a perfect Superman? Critics and haters blame Zack for making Superman a Jesus-like figure. I think THEY see Superman as a Jesus-like figure, a perfect Messiah that saves everyone, ends wars, brings only hope and so on. A bit hypocritical imho.

I'll never forget within the first 10 minutes of the opening Krypton scene I looked over to my brother and told him this is better than every other Superman movie that's already out. I think it also comes down to perspectives as a comic book reader and a film-based fan... People who have not read most of the comics will not understand the character development implementation in this DCEU genre envisioned by Zack Snyder... its not just underrated. Its rightly underrated. Man of Steel is a movie that fails to do justice to its lead character and provide any great thrill or entertainment.
Positives- There is great spectacle. VFX, action, dazzling sequences.
Cast - There is a big star cast. Henry Cavil even if he not the best of actors looks great as Super Man. I also thought the actor playing the villian did a good job of playing the character though he did not look very menacing. The rest of cast is also good though they really do not have very significant roles. Lois Lane's character is completely wasted. Only Russell Crowe seemed to have somewhat of an useful role.
Negatives - I was not very enthused by the concept of the movie itself. I am not sure if this is origin story super man needed. It just does not fit the character. As a standalone concept its fine. But it just not fits Superman the superhero. In fact this movie at no point felt like a Super Man movie. It felt Superman and some of well known themes of his comics like his origin from Krypton, Lois Lane as reporter had been mashed into a story. Maybe with a different character and as original sci-fi action movie unrelated to super man this movie could have worked, somewhat better. But it fails as the origin story.
The mood and tone of film is unnecessarily gloomy throughout. And the movie tries too hard to establish Super man as the hero when its not that hard. I mean Henry Cavil saves people. Then he is bullied. Then the young kid saves people. Then he is bullied. Then the family angle is strongly forced. I mean at every step Super Man has to show his greatness and strength of his character. This continues right till the end. As for the mood, the first 15 minutes or so are fine. It seems the movie would be sort of entertaining sci-fi action movie but the movie really adopts a very gloomy tone as it starts on earth. I am not sure if enhancing the value of Super Man's character by presenting his life as sad and tragic and giving the movie a sort of philosophical touch was the right idea. I mean what was the original punch line of Super Man.
Its a bird, No its a plane. Its Super Man. Super Man is kind of a dashing character. To make him so philosophical and emotional was just not the right. The movie fails on all levels.
I would give man of steel a 5-5.5.

I never understood why this movie was not liked. So much deeper dives into the characters than the previous movies. Not just good vs evil but motives behind the conflict. The psyche behind these characters. This movie showed how these people may have really acted if they were real, their struggles and ideological differences. That guidance he received from the Kents showed why Superman was who he was and not Red Son superman. Nurture VS. Nature aspects. I guess it is about what the audience has patience for and expectations. Great analysis

I reject the idea that superman caused too much damage. Or that it was out of his character to kill zod too. This is Superman's origin story. Klark doesn't even know what it is/means to be superman yet! Not to mention that he is completely overwhelmed by everything going on . reunited with his people. But they want to destroy humanity for their own agenda. Understanding their agenda because they are his people too and being torn up about it. Being threatened himself, his mother and lois being threatened. He is completely justified in also being very angry with zod.
This was the best superman to this day. I love it so much! Henry Cavil is so phenomenal in the role. Im so excited for the Snyder cut of the justice league. I thought Man of Steel was brilliant. Having grown up with the original, I went into it with arms folded, and walked out completely impressed. Imo it's easily the best of the DC movie that came out post-Dark Knight. It's a completely unique take on story; the cinematography was awesome, the music, the action and fight scenes, and the whole flows well. Faora was an awesome sidekick to Zod (those eyes!). There are things we never thought of: the change of atmosphere so the needs for the breathers, their ship and the World Engine. I love even the little things like that scene when Zod communicates to the world in all languages. The entire movie is solid and I've never seen seen Snyder or DC be able to duplicate the character development and unique storytelling that works so well in Man of Steel.

Snyder's Man of Steel is like classic Star Trek: deep humanistic philisophy, moral driven, deepening backstory, characters and leave the audience thinking. Superman is good by doing good and believing in good, but also: good cannot exist without evil. That, plus being true to the comics, made Man of Steel a cult classic. It stands alone, but above everything else.

That's what I hear most from supporters of Man of Steel. "I never really liked the character until seeing this movie".
Well, yeah. There is a reason for that. It was made by someone who didn't like the character. Someone who wrote it to be more along the lines of what he would enjoy instead of staying true to what he is supposed to be. Its like saying I wasn't an Abe Lincoln fan until seeing the movie were he fought vampires.
John often says the decisions made in the movie were right for the story.. But when the person making the movie goes into it saying "if I'm going to make a Superman movie, I want a fight that leaves thousands dead and has Superman kill", then yeah, he's going to write ways for that to happen. But its completely missing the point. Thousands of Superhero stories get to a point where it looks like the hero is going to have to go against his beliefs or fail or lose. The finding a way not to is what makes them better. "Clark HAD to let Jonathan die", "It was Superman's first day".. Well, Goliath would of course beat David. But the good storyteller shows how David does the impossible. If this movie didn't make it clear Snyder would rather progress the story than have Clark be the hero that every other hero that comes after looks up to because he ALWAYS finds a way, BvS hammers it home. Scenes like him walking out of the burning courthouse moping instead of springing into action putting out the fire or looking for people to help shows he doesn't get the character.

Agree with 99.9% of what you said. Only thing I disagree on is he’s never “Superman” I’m this moving, he’s just a man with superpowers. This movie is the beginning of CLARK’S journey to eventually become SUPERMAN.
I don’t think he fully becomes Superman until he sacrifices himself to save the world in BvS. And going forward, after his resurrection, he becomes the Superman everyone knows and loves. The Superman people complained he wasn’t in the first two films. I think they missed that he didn’t quite become Superman yet. This is Clark with superpowers.

So he just needed to find his hope/motivation again because he felt like no one fully appreciated him. So perhaps that was his full character arc at the end of bvs where he finds that saving people is worth it even though people will always complain or there will be collateral damage.

I've fought with people about the dopeness of this film for years. There's a section of the fandom that hates Superman and would never fully give MOS a legitimate chance. Then there are people who see Superman in such a narrow scope they didn't want to see a Clark Kent experience doubt, confusion or isolation. This take was the perfect modern update of the character. People just won't ask themselves valid questions. If you were the only one of your kind, powers and all, would you not feel like the ultimate outsider? Even the killing of Zod. "Superman doesn't kill. There were other options." What do you do with a Zod? As you said, determined, military trained with all Superman's powers. Superman didn't have a choice. Even if there was something he could have done in the moment, what jail would hold Zod? Killing him would have become necessary in the future. For me, we'd always merely accepted that Superman doesn't kill. Now we see why. He was deviated by his choice. The only choice he could have made.

The beliefs and fears that Jonathan Kent has regarding the Earth's reactions to Clark/Superman are true and realistically grounded. The conversation with the Kents and the child's mother after the bus incident drive this point home. Then again the reactions of the priest later during his conversation with Clark. I think that partially has to do with the differing tones that the movies set. Man of Steel is a pretty somber film that takes itself pretty seriously, while Marvel movies tend to go with a pretty light-hearted tone. When a movie takes itself seriously, it's inviting the audience to also take it seriously. When films have a more light hearted and often comedic tone, they don't invite the same level of criticism.
Captain America Civil War has some massive "holes" when you consider some of the timing and logistics of the movie. But audiences didn't really care because it's more fun to watch Spider-Man making quips than it is to watch Vision immediately incapacitate everyone on the opposing side. Man of Steel doesn't have the same veneer of playful fun, and so audiences aren't as willing to just write off their issues with the movie.

    1) There's much people who complain about the "destruction of half of the city" (yes, people say things like this) would never be acceptable for a Superman performance, but in the last time I watched this movie I realized that most of the damage (which covered about half dozen of blocks and NOT half the city) was made even before Kal-El came back from the eastern hemisphere, which was during the fight between the Kryptonian ship and the human defense forces, when the terraforming machine was fully functional.
    2) A very important scene, that would worth to be mentioned, is when Zod learns how to fly, at the top of that construction site. I really tremble every time I watch the scene for its emblematic significance. Flying was the last power Kal-El learned, already a grown-up man and Zod simply figured it out in the heat of the battle. Then Zod says: "I was bred to be a warrior, Kal. Trained my entire life to master my senses! Where did you train? On a farm?!" - and that single line has brutally pulled Kal to a dreadful reality. The stakes, already high, just became stratospheric. A countdown immediately started. Kal-El knew in that moment that if he does not end that battle soon, he may never be able to win it, as Zod's control of his own powers escalates faster and faster.
I can count in one hand's fingers the number of comics-related movies I simply never get tired to watch, and Man of Steel is certainly one of them.

So much detail and I like how you point out how fast zod was adapting. Kal el had been tinkering with his heat since he was a child and Zods heat vision was seemingly twice as powerful the first time he did it in that building. Wow

I completely agree. It was the Superman movie I always wanted, and it was done brilliantly.
